Flint
River (for river rock)

Obie (for obsidian. except obsidian would be an odd barn name I think)
Onyx
Jet
Jasper
Thanks so much you guys. Kid is liking Storm a lot currently. Short list is Orion, Cinder, and Storm. I know it is a little dramatic to say that his name is awful… We can think of a lot worse. More that kid isn’t 100% happy with any on the short list yet and we are trying to give her creative options that make sense to her to see if any resonate. At this point kid is still calling the horse “gray horse” so she isn’t settled on Storm or Stormy yet.
And we know a Smokey already and while we all love Sterling it didn’t make sense to the kid.
As a bonus, rode him again today and he was lovely. Such a cool guy!
I second the names Sterling, Gandalf, Argent, and Steel.
Cirrus. (Type of cloud)
Nimbus (short for Cumulonimbus, the storm cloud)
No one said Thunder? Maybe I missed it.
Horsenado definitely. Lol
You could maybe let the kid read Sinead Halpin’s blog post here about her Tate, and perhaps that would exorcise the bad connotations?

Horsenado definitely. Lol[/QUOTE]
Okay, this leads to the obvious question:
Would anyone besides me love to name a horse Sharknado, barn name Sharkey?

Hahaha, I might love that…but my last name is Sharkey
I’m one of those really old school people who subscribes to the old horse wives tales that changing a name is bad luck.
But I’d let the kid call the horse whatever she wants to (well, within reason). My brother named his first dog Snoopy. We also had a cat named Id. Both animals lived long, trouble-free lives.
If she likes PREMEDITATED for a show name, how about PIRATE for a barn name, as it is an anagram from the show name. Also, seems to suit his personality a bit.
I gave my suggestions on FB.
let the child pick the barn name and the adults should butt out.
It is HER horse and her love and fun.
Kid stood out in the field with him this morning and tried calling all three names to him: Cinder, Storm and Orion. Horse turned and looked at her when she said Orion, but started walking towards her when she said Storm. She gave him a big hug and welcomed Storm into their family.
Thank you for all the suggestions, she loved the process of picking his name and getting to think about all the choices. As I said before, this is a kid who wanted suggestions and wanted to hear options because she wasn’t sure if Storm was the right name in the beginning, but now she knows for sure.
Horses have a way to name themselves, if you listen to them.
On the other hand, they also will learn any one name you care to call them.
Glad that he has a name now.
How cute! Its a great name and the horse knows best!
Smoke, Smokey, though I had a stormy who was just a wonderful horse. Dorian might be a little too dark of a name especially as the horse gets older. Kiran, McCloud, Oscar.
Slate.
Bluey,
I would have to agree with your last comments about them learning to respond to any name we care to call them. I had a pony I trained who was a pudgy little quarter pony named Matilda. The one barn owner had a tendancy to refer to her as “pudgy” I think because he may have forgotten her actual name (the care was good, and she was on pasture board so he didn’t often have to handle her). The funny thing was that pony learned to listen for “Pudgy” because that is what the person who fed her would call her if he was to say anything to her. I didn’t mind him calling her that as he wasn’t being mean he was just being quite literal, and compared to his race horses she deffinitely was pudgy.
