What do you use for hide rubs, harness galls, and shallow wounds? The last 30 years I’ve used a fantastic mixture made by a local Amish harness maker, but he has passed and he never passed the recipe down.
On HGS I know there was a clay that people swore by, but with the site down I can’t look it up.

I use alushield on pretty much everything wound related.
Yup, I also use Alusheild on stuff like that.
I use Dermagel for stuff like that. It’s great for minor wounds on horses, dogs, kittens and husbands.
Same here! It’s also safe for use on birds (my poor cockatiel scalped herself, and it healed beautifully using DermaGel daily).
I’ve been using bag balm on some flaky/scabby skin at his girth/elbow and also on some areas that reacted to strong fly spray (pyrrhana). This has worked well.
I am a self-professed hoarder of medical ointments. sprays, gels, etc. for humans, dogs, cats and horses. But I use Neosporin most frequently I suppose, for minor cuts and scrapes. That’s my replacement for FuraZone that I used for years and years, before it was outed as potentially causing cancer some years ago (I figured there just wasn’t any need to temp fate with my families history of cancers).
Neosporin user here. There are two kinds, ointment and cream. The ointment has more of an oily base.
My vet suggested this protocol: if its wet (e.g., oozy, weeping) use the cream. If its dry (e.g., scaly) use the ointment.
I like polysporin for anything small and open, then Corona. I find Corona really helps put the hair back on nicely.
I generally use Tri-Care ointment on smaller rubs/sores or Alushield if it is really weepy.

Are there flies in it?
If there aren’t flies in it or a risk of flies in it, I leave them alone. Most things you put on wounds are just going to make them heal slower.
If there are flies in it I put swat on it.
@MissAriel I use the ointment. I like it because it makes kind of a bandaid coating when it dries.
At my house, the vet box doubles as a first aid kit so mine would be of the horse variety.
Another vote for Neosporin. And swat, if flies are an issue. Then if it scabs up and I’m trying to combat that/get hair back, I switch to vitamin e oil.
Of course I first clean it with saline wash or a nolvasan scrub, before doing any of the above.
Honestly, I’ve stopped using most other ointments/powders/magical solutions and have had a lot of luck with this treatment…or benign neglect, if it’s nothing serious.

I call it ‘managed neglect’ and have 2 old guys who are doing pretty well on that system!
I have very very similar approach to wound care. I clean it, dab on some Derma Gel for a couple days until it scabs over and then I do not mess with it again (assuming it continues healing normally). My OTTB jumped over wire fence in April and took off a good chunk of hair and skin off his back legs. I followed my system and then forced myself to not touch the scrapes after they scabbed over. Couple months later, he is left with no scars and hair is 99% grown back.
Thanks guys! My current tub of goo is nearly empty and I’ve always liked that hair always regrew and matched the hair around it. I’m going to def. get some derma-gel at least for myself to go with my Mycitracian/Neosporin.

I swear by diaper rash cream Cheap, waterproof, thick for protection and the zinc heals everything super quickly. I use it on myself too for scrapes, zits etc.

I started using this stuff a few months ago after trying everything else listed in the above posts over many years. This stuff works so much better than anything else and is now my go-to product.
Alumashield and also Pureshield,which is like a spray-on bandage.I use them over triple antibiotic if the sore is open. here in florida we have to jump on any open sore quickly otherwise a summer sore is sure to develop,
