Holly Bull Thoughts?

Shammy or GG

As for his racing career, he could carry weight and some compare him to Spectacular Bid. I didn’t follow his stud career. Think his best were Giacomo and Macho Uno. Lots of turf writers are of the persuasion that his legacy is as a broodmare sire. The stats are supportive of that. His pedigree has not really stood up to the test of time though were talking a number of decades back. So it is hard to come to any conclusions. Giacomo went to South America some years back I think.

I know that he was a striking specimen. Couldn’t handle an off-track though so, if genetic pundits are right, maybe his progeny line should stay in the barn on a wet day.

Giacomo was in Maryland, now in Oregon.

I knew Giacomo went someplace where it rained a great deal. Considering Holy Bull’s aversion to the slop maybe Oregon wasn’t the best choice.

One of my all time favorites. That Travers!! I think we never got to see the best of him, he would have gotten better with age if not for that career ending injury.

As an aside: Commanche Trail (yes, it is spelled with 2 m’s) was sent out as the rabbit for Tabasco Cat in the Travers. But it didn’t work. Despite Commanche Trail sprinting to the lead, Holy Bull took over and cruised to the win.

(Commanche Trail has been sitting in my field for the last 19 years and he is still a grand old guy. )

Just a thought here. Isn’t the Holy Bull Stakes coming up quick? Perhaps this vaguely worded OP question had to do with this year’s running.

It would be funny if Andrew were really talking about a horse named Holly Bull. There is one, a 2005 daughter of Holy Bull.

It is a vague question. Yes the HOLY Bull (not Holly) Stakes is coming up quickly. Like tomorrow. The Holy Bull Stk is a Derby “Prep-points” race.

Comments on the horses and race;

I love horses that come off the pace, so I’m going with Gunnevera. Probably box him with Classic Empire. Does anyone know the post time for this race?

Lol the question about the race makes more sense. I think Classic Empire is going to get it, but if I were a betting person looking for a longer shot I might put a few bucks on Fact Finding.

tbchick84, post time for the race is 5:35.

LOL. Talking about a thread with no clear direction, I sure played the fool. As it is the race, not the horse, that is the point of conversation I have to place my win money on Classic Empire. Will admit though that this early in the derby preps I have never had a clue.

That would be 5:35p ET  (since not all of us live on the other coast  ).

Personally, just as much as the Holy Bull, I’m looking forward to the match up between Champaign Room and Unique Bella in the Las Virgenes also on Saturday afternoon at Santa Anita, 1:30pm PT.

I too am most excited about the Las Virgenes, we could see a match up between the next generation of super fillies

Not really. From the title I thought the same as you. I was going to go in the same direction as you when first read.

Bentonbill’s comment made sense. Interesting that the OP hasn’t chimed back in to his/her’s own thread. Why start a thread and walk away?

We bred to Holy Bull twice got nice horses that we sold. But not for life style changing prices.

But Holy Bull via Giacomo provided a bit of lifestyle change. Our syndicate had the Tri in the Derby and wins tickets on him. It paid HUGE!! On any other normal stakes day, race he never would have gone off at 50-1.

I had the triple! Too bad it only paid $16.25.

Speaking of betting, I’ve just discovered that TwinSpires will let me in, though I thought I lived in a no-bet state. Apparently, you can bet on the internet but not live here. Whatever. If you think you can’t bet in your state, might try and see what happens. Anyway, in my very low-key initial explorations of TwinSpires, I plunked down $4 on Irish War Cry to show. Didn’t pay much, but hey, it was a winning ticket.

My mistake, Las Virgenes is tomorrow (Sunday) (where is that blush?)

Holy Bull… great race. Classic Empire was sure washy prior to the load and balky getting into the gate.

Let the 3 year old season continue

Where’sMyWhite, I was providing “local time”. I’m pretty sure everyone knows their own time zone, even on another coast.
