Home made jumps...show me yours!!

I do have landscape timbers…I need to find out what my husband has done with them. Yours look AWESOME painted!!!

just say NO to pvc. I use 10’ long PT 4x4’s and cut off the edges at a 45 degree angle with the circular (they all have a setting to set the blade at an angle). I just mark off about a 1" line inside and use a chalk string to mark it, then cut away. They are ummm, almost never equal on all sides, but they jump just fine. And when I am really bored I just add a few square ones (sand the edges a bit) since nice heavy square poles are good for careless toes. Then last but not least, when I’m feeling lazy and flush with $$, go pick up poles from Hamps.

I bought 10’ green-treated 4x4s and had the lumbermill cut the corners off all the way down to make octagonal poles. The local lumbermill was cheaper than Home Depot and they did the cutting AND delivery for free! (Ok, I’m pretty sure the delivery was free because my BO was a homebuilder/barn builder and a really good customer, but the cuts would have been free regardless). I ordered 15 (have 5 sets of jump standards) and wish I would have ordered more. I also wish I would have went with 8 foot poles because those suckers are heavy.

I primed and painted all of my poles and standards (at least white). Most have stripes. They are quite lovely, imo. I also bought white landscape timbers and drilled holes and made flower boxes that way.

I got really carried away with my jumps and spent days (literally) taping and painting (because of course I did 2 coats) and bought way too many colors, etc. A little silly $-wise, in retrospect.

Landscape timbers are much lighter and cheaper, btw.

Thanks. And actually they’d been sitting around for a few years before I painted them, I was happy with how they turned out.

I found the paint for $3 in the “oops” section of Lowes. I REALLY wanted to try and find some decorative life saving rings and screw them into a plywood “plank” and have a coast guard jump, but it never happened.

They’ve weathered pretty well…those were painted in 2010, and this picture (sister on her greenie…she’s a bit enthusiastic still) was taken in June.

DMK…Hamp has everything doesnt he??? I havent been there in years…

I do have an entire bundle of landscape timbers laying down at the shop…I need to swipe a few.

My horse has jumped everything…but he has been known to look HARD at the solid stuff at shows, trainers, etc if he hasnt seen it in a while.

Thank you all for the pictures and ideas!!! I may just need to employ you to make me a jump or two!

Here’s ![](y a few of my wing standards. not bad for a chic with a few powertools!

I’m using landscape timbers. Some painted and some not…not only does it give me more ring space, but going from a 8’ pole to a 12’ at a show makes it feel like you are jumping on a highway.
How much do landscaoe timbers generally cost? These look great.

Around here, they are 3 or 4 bucks a rail.

YAY so cheap! hum - must get going on some new jumps. I board, and those ones at the barn are in sorry shape, but I do not want to make a big investment.

Looks like it is time to pick up some rails and some over stock paint!

Jumper girl…I actually have one of those culverts laying in my front yard!!! Didnt think about that!

Jem those look great!!

so many crafty people!

Love building stuff!
Liverpool from landscape timbers, 2x4x4s & doubled tarp.
Coop from panel of vinyl privacy fence from Lowe’s, cut in 1/2, attached to a wood a-frame.

Also started with pvc pipe for rails. Am slowly replacing with wooden poles, so have filled pipe with sand & capped with these- http://www.tayloranderson.net/rocket_launcher/materials/two_inch_pvc_cap.jpg
& use the filled pipe as ground lines.

Awesome jumps everyone! I’m teaching lessons at a camp this year and they are pretty limited in terms of jumps. I was thinking if it was cheap enough to do, I’d donate one or two jumps. I think they have enough standards, just not poles and fillers (I’ll have to buy a few jump cups too, but that’s fine).

So, what can I make in a very rural area with one weekend to work and with only a cordless drill for a tool? I have access to Lowes and a craft store, so I’m at least thinking a little flower box or two. Anything else easy?

My homemade jumps are not as interesting as my homemade jump cups: http://pets.webshots.com/photo/2242338740043029495cWBFLK
The bridles we buy for our trail horses come with those crap-tastic bits, so we decided to find a new use for them

I usually wait until mid summer when they go on sale and can get them for about $1.50 or so each, and I buy up $100 worth :stuck_out_tongue:

you do have to watch them since the warp easily, and make sure to turn them routinely to help with the straightness issues, but I do like the price, and the fact they are all ready round  Use oil based paint as well, it lasts longer then the acrylic

Between me and my ex BF, all of these are handmade:

If you like any, let me know and I will tell you construction!

Nines…the video wouldnt play for me…?

My husband is a builder and perfectly capeable of builing some nice jumps…he just lacks the time and motivation! On the upside we have tons of materials laying around the shop that I can use…the downside is I just need to do it and cart it off to the barn before he sees what I am using!

These are mine. There are some really great ideas on this thread that I will have to try to add some variety!

Here is a link to a jump that I made for my senior project. Very simple to make, and didn’t take that much time either. Good weight on it, doesn’t go flying if hit but will tip if necessary. Fairly lightweight too, I of little arm muscle am able to carry each section by myself.
