How important is it to use only salt treated wood? We have a bunch of usable scraps from building our barn but most of it is not ST. I know for feet or anything that touches the ground it probably should be, but I hate to buy new lumber with all I already have…
I used non salt treated for my coop (although its been two years and the “branches” are starting to look a little iffy, but I didn’t even pull the bark off). My coops arent’ treated and are barn scraps.
If its un treated, and you want to use it…go ahead. It might only be good for a few years, although if you paint it that will help it last longer.
pressure treated, do you mean? (never heard of “salt treated” before). I think PT lumber will be more durable, and probably worth the money if your jumps sit in wet grass, maybe not as critical if they sit in a sand arena. As a rule of thumb I use PT wood for standards and poles and then even spar uruthane the tops and bottoms for added durability, but fillers tend to be made with whatever works. I would also like to make fillers out of pvc as long as they have a wood rail over them - I have a plan to make a PVC coop one of these days…
salt treated = pressure treated, at least as far as I know (I’ve heard the terms interchangeably).
Reviving this thread to ask: what is the best way to affix flowers to rails and boxes? I am familiar with drilling holes in the top and poking the flowers in. Do they stay there well? Any other ingenius designs? I just got a massive bunch (like boxes and boxes) of faux flowers off of kijiji and am so excited to use them all in my jumps!
I would like to make some ramped flower walls if that makes sense…
Sounds like you scored big! We just drill the holes and put them in. We drill the holes very small though so it is a very tight fit.
We do the same thing as ParadoxFarm. The only problem we have come across is if you turn horses out in your arena. We had a mischievous stallion out there one day who picked almost all of the flowers out of nearly all the flower boxes in under 30 min while we went to lunch :mad:
Yep…just drill holes and stuff them in…I have had no problems with them coming out.
I will say that depending on the flowers the stems can vary in size, so, some stuck up more than others.

Double sided coupe. I built this using pre-cut stair treads from Home Depot and also had them cut boards to length. All I had to do then was screw it together.

Yes, scored so big. Someone in the wedding decor business was closing out. I filled my entire crossover type car thing to the roof including the passenger seat with flowers. About 21 boxes. The woman must have thought I was a crazed lunatic when she opened her garage door, I saw the flowers and just about passed out in excitement. We had to dump half of them in loose to fit them all in the car. It was an interesting drive home…
