Homemade Equishure

Alright y’all, now let’s make some homemade ritetrac so I don’t have to pay $230 for a few pounds of it!

KER sure acting like the cartel selling some white powder at a high price. Anyhoo.

We use a 50/50 mixture of soy lecithin and marine calcium (30g of each); works better than Equishure did!

FFWS is definitely a beast. I, personally, would try something cheap - psyllium. Feed 1c daily for at least 2 weeks. It’s helped enough horses to be worth a try. You can buy it from some bulk supply stores, it does not have to be Sand Clear or Metamucil or anything like that - psyllium husk is psyllium husk

HorseTech has a new product called Water Werks which contains a lot of things (including psyllium) that have helped various horses, so it’s sort of a kitchen sink approach, but also worth a try if the straight psyllium doesn’t help.

Thanks for getting back to me. She was on psyllium and actually got worse. The vet has changed her feed 3 times in the past year. No sudden changes… I took it slow when I switched her feed. She is now on Triple Crown Senior plus. I’ve tried everything my vet has recommended. I even got a second opinion from another equine vet. This equiShure…I was hoping it would work. She’s been on it over two weeks now and there’s no change. The hay is orchard grass and some alfalfa in it… maybe 20%. Good soft clean hay. She’s had beet pulp probably for the first six months when I first got her… mixed with Excel Senior feed. Other than the squirts… she gained around 400- 500 pounds since I got her almost a year ago. But she eats good… acts good and very well behaved. Just trying to keep her cleaned up. We’ve had a mild winter so far so I wash her behind up about every 4-5 days. I’ve never had a horse that has had a problem like this . All new to me. The only test she hasn’t had is an endoscope or an ultrasound sound. I may go ahead and have that done. Spending a lot of money on supplements and other meds trying to see what helps and this equiShure was the last thing… but I may check into what you suggested. Thanks again… I appreciate you getting back with me. Cathy

this was going to be my next question - what’s the hay.

OG is a trigger for a lot of horses, so that’s what I’d do next, replace all the OG with something else for a few weeks and see what happens. I know that can be really difficult, but it makes a world of difference for so many horses.

As you probably know… good hay is hard to find. I can’t find timothy hay around here. Usually some of the hay farmers get one cutting and that’s it. I am so picky about my hay. I don’t buy 1st cuttings because the sugar is higher and I also have an insulin resistant gelding… but I did find some decent square bales with fescue…bluegrass and a little orchard grass. But… he sold it all. I’m going to talk to my neighbor that bought several square bales from him and see if I can trade some of mine for theirs. When I got Penny… she had this same problem going on. But we thought it was because she had such a strong egg count of worms. I have often thought about the hay but of course my vet said as long as it nice soft hay and not stemmy… she’d be fine. I’ll do some trading around and see if it helps. I bought 300 square bales of what I have now. But it’s worth a try and also I got the water werks coming. They are sending me a sample for two weeks free of charge to try out! Thanks again!

Where do you buy marine (red algae?) calcium source from?

Local minerals supplier. I’m in Australia, think it comes from Iceland.
