not far from me at all.
So so sad, sickening… I have a pit in my stomach thinking about it. Poor poor horses.

I feel terrible for the connections as well… but the horses…
http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/2016/01/05/at-least-43-racehorses-die-in-ontario-stable-fire.html checked it again and it worked this time…

FYI, the second link does not work, it says page expired.

How tragic. Just speechless.

fixed thanks

That was second lead on one of the local radio stations and we are far from Ontario. Checked Standardbred Canada as soon as I heard and they posted this article and are adding updates as they get them - http://www.standardbredcanada.ca/news/1-5-16/tragic-fire-classy-lane.html

So sad and horrific. Those poor, poor horses.

From a post on FB by her owner, there was a TB mare on rehab there. They also lost 2 colts they were part-owners of… the mare had just moved to start using their walker… devastating for all.
I know the horses probably died of smoke inhalation, but I am sure it was horrible for the ones there first to hear… and then the silence…
I don’t know any of the owners/trainers but I am so so sad.

There is now a fund set up for those who suffered losses - http://www.standardbredcanada.ca/notices/1-5-16/cosa-sets-official-fire-fund.html

So awful. I am so sorry for all involved.

Such a heartbreak. Apprentice Hanover had just qualified at Woodbine that afternoon too. :frowning: My hair curled a bit more when I turned on the TV this morning and saw the coverage on the news but missed where it was as my SO just hauled his 4 YO filly to race at Woodbine on Thursday and is staying at a training centre. Fortunately the one she’s at is in a totally different neighborhood.

Some pictures have been posted. https://www.facebook.com/ctvtoronto/posts/10153859409824579

Yes, she is a friend of mine. So sad.
What I am also having a hard time with is the amount of vitriol spewing from the mouths of ‘internet experts’ in the comments sections of news sites, concerning the race industry. A lot of the people making comments probably don’t know one end of the horse from another.
This was a devastating fire, and there is no need for the types of comments that are coming in. Those should be saved for a different day.

I was working last night for one of the responding fire departments… absolutely tragic.
I think the horses were well gone before anyone knew the barn was on fire. flames were already visible. When we got there, the barn was fully involved. My heart just sank. So very devastating.
The Go Fund Me account by Standardbred Ontario is booming. any little bit helps.

Prayers that all the innocent lives that left last night did so quickly. I could only imagine the panic in the barn. :frowning:

Thank you for your efforts, AutumnReign, and thank you to all the fire crews who tried to help.
It is heartbreaking, I can’t get the thoughts and images out of my mind.

A bit of good news…my friend just posted that one of her SBs was not in Barn 1, as previously thought. ?

I generally avoid internet comment sections just for this reason.

What a tragedy. The barn across from my grandparents burned down with horses in it when I was a child. The experience stays with you.

mht, a little bit of good news, but I too stopped reading the comments. I listened the As it Happens interview of Ben Wallace too and could have smacked the interviewer. After he explained how close they all are to the horses, trainers and grooms, etc., she asks “would you say there was a close relationship with the horses?” A$$hole… did you listen to him or just to your questions?
I was crying listening to him, saying he was more concerned for his employees who had nothing to do… I just hope that they were paid legally and can claim EI…
I am sick to my stomach still…

you can listen here http://tinyurl.com/hmewgdj

Very compassionate and patient with a stupid interviewer…

I’m so sorry to hear this. My heart breaks for the connections.

The first barn I ever worked in at the Fair Hill Training Center went up in flames and to this day it is one of the most gut wrenching things I ever witnessed. You never get over it.
