Horrible barn fire in Ontario. 40 standardbreds perish.

Someone on my friends list posted a link about the fire. One of his friends spewed crap about it being for insurance money and shame on them. It got deleted pretty quickly after I posted what a complete and utter crock that was, since the article even stated that none of the horses were insured.

Unfortunately, a lot of the public do not understand the workings of the race industry, and even some of the rest of the horse community.

There were questions in an Ontario based buy-sell-part board-lease FB group on why these horses weren’t insured. It seems like some of the answers that got posted helped those who aren’t involved have a little bit more understanding.

Having been involved in the Standardbred industry pretty actively as a teenager, this still hurts my heart so much. Knowing how much time and energy, how much care and love is put into each horse…to lose them in such a terrible way is so heartbreaking.

Also keeping my fingers crossed that everyone was paid on the books, and able to get some EI.

Are we able to post the Standardbred Canada gofundme link? Or is that against the rules?

In case the mods would rather not have the gofundme link posted, see this article from Standardbred Canada. http://www.standardbredcanada.ca/news/1-5-16/wallace-devastated-blaze.html

The generosity of people at this time to help everyone devastated by this fire is so heart warming. Over $47K donated so far to COSA. There are two other gofundmes going and all funds are going to be merged with COSAs. I believe there is a list somewhere also of grooms who no longer have jobs if somebody is looking to hire.

Awful tragedy. :frowning:

A nightmare for us all. Those poor horses and people.

The Crown funding is up to over $75K!

The standardbred group in Ontario is very supporting. Some of the donations (multiple $5K donations) are amazing. I noticed some very generous donations from around Ottawa too, where some of us barely have a couple of nickles to rub together especially with the only game in town being down for a couple of weeks, hence my SO being in Toronto to race hoping our tough ass filly is up to the Woodbine crowd.

Apologies for the run-on sentence.

A well-run barn, but horse barns are fire attractants. Once they catch they go.

Perhaps, just hoping, that fire safety regulations will be made stronger with sprinklers in all barns. Hastings, here in Vancouver, is so old a decrepit, it would be a disaster.

My first event horse was a Standardbred and STB owners are very close to their horses, often taking a very hands-on approach to their training and driving.

Dreadful.

Even though I am a TB owner, I gave a donation. I know a lot of SB guys from having owned a restaurant just down the road from the Robinson Stables, in Hagersville. Just giving back.

I intend to send something but have to figure out my cc payment first. I noticed a fairly big donation from a TB rehab centre too.
Over $84K now… There are 3 GoFundMe sites, all legit.
I questioned one but my own vet replied it was set up by the on site vet, a good friend of hers, so she could say it is legit.

jvanrens, or FI, do you know where that list of people looking for jobs might be?

I think requiring sprinkler systems in large boarding barns would most likely end large boarding barns existing before it would cause people to run out and install sprinkler systems. The cost of the modifications necessary to provide a sprinkler system for a barn that size would make it something most facilities would not do.

I can’t seem to find it anywhere, but one article on Standardbred Canada lists the contact http://www.standardbredcanada.ca/notices/1-5-16/cosa-sets-official-fire-fund.htm:

In light of the tragic events, Pat Harding of the Standardbred Race Track Chaplaincy of Canada has initiated a project to contact trainers who are in need of grooms and grooms from the affected stables that will now need to find new employment.

Trainers in need of a groom can contact Pat Harding at 905-876-8543, or any groom in need can contact Harding at the same number.
An equipment/stable supplies drive has also been established for the fire victims. Anyone wishing to donate items can do so at Woodbine on Thursday and Friday evening. Arrangements can also be made to have items picked up from other tracks and/or training centres or farms by contacting Jackie Panko: jackiepanko@gmail.com or call 226-343-1925.

Tonight, Woodbine will pay tribute to the horses who died in the fire with a video presentation and a minute of silence. I wonder if it will be posted somewhere… I will have tissues ready!

I know after the terrible fire at Woodbine, the new build has sprinklers.
I can see the problem with retro-fitting barns, but perhaps it should be mandatory with new commercial enterprises, in particular ones of this size.
Sadly, there is the same situation with retirement homes. There have been some horrific fires, and loss of life, with people simply trapped.

Thank you, jvanrens. My neighbour has a TB race barn and could use some good, reliable help.

Nursing homes are required to have sprinklers. Not just new construction.

Barns are different. They are not (necessarily) heated and the amount of dust and such makes for issues. They also frequently exist where the water supply might not be what is necessary for a sprinkler system which would add the expense of a fire pump and water storage.

I know municipality owned facilities (like fair grounds) that have sprinklers but I am guessing they were required because those barns were considered assembly spaces (indoor with bleachers), not just barns.

Precious Bunny  . Thanks, MHT. Many of the outfits in “our” (S. ON) area are smaller, family operations…so this hits hard. As a young teen I used to work at a stable and fell in love with a pacing mare who was part of their string. She was a fun ride, and as sweet as all get out. It’s kept a special place in my heart for Standies even though I am a hardcore TB lover.

I hugged the one standie in our barn yesterday… telling her how lucky she was to be retired and loved… I know she would not have been in that kind of barn, but she is the only standie I know…

They now have a list of all the horses - http://www.standardbredcanada.ca/news/1-5-16/tragic-fire-classy-lane.html
