Horrible barn fire in Ontario. 40 standardbreds perish.

Nursing homes are required to have sprinklers. Not just new construction.

Barns are different. They are not (necessarily) heated and the amount of dust and such makes for issues. They also frequently exist where the water supply might not be what is necessary for a sprinkler system which would add the expense of a fire pump and water storage.

I know municipality owned facilities (like fair grounds) that have sprinklers but I am guessing they were required because those barns were considered assembly spaces (indoor with bleachers), not just barns.[/QUOTE]

I’m glad to hear that nursing homes in NY are required to have sprinklers. However this is an ongoing situation here in Canada, with different legislation. AFAIK the gov has said that nursing homes should have sprinklers, but they are not in place in older institutions. There was a horrific fire a couple of years ago in Quebec that has added impetus to this.

As for the barns, I would think a ‘state of the art facility’ would have sprinklers, a night watch person and other emergency measures in place.
“Adding to the expense” - I’m sorry, but when the money is there to install incredibly expensive training tracks, the money should be there for the safety of the horses.
It is not an ‘added expense’ IMO.

FI, thanks for posting that link, it is all just so sad.
Fire is my biggest worry in my little barn.

You beat me with the tribute link

Gofundme is now over 143K

Over $154K
wow…
I just realized this barn is less than 2 km from my DD’s in-laws and friends… one road south and one concession east. I am sure they could see the flames and hear the sirens. Ugh…

I just looked at the donations on the main GFM site (almost $160K now) and I recognized many names… Vet clinics/hospitals, regular barns, other owners, even a big contribution from a stud in France, a horse sanctuary, it is amazing how quickly all these donations add up. Some give big and to the other GFMs as well, some give little ie whatever they can spare.

It is heart warming. I am sending my small donation today. And I just heard on the radio that the Fire Marshall has completed the on site investigation, but the fire burnt so intense and so long, they are left with very few clues. We “may” know when the report is issued in 3 to 4 months! I just hope the insurance covering the barns help to rebuild even if the report is not available. But with insurance… who knows.

I am so impressed with the horse community right now. It is amazing how we can all come together like this.

GoFundMe is now at $168+k

Still wondering how they are going to divide the money up.

FI–A friend of mine posted the GFM link from the vet you were talking about, and I also questioned it. When she replied that it was an onsite vet, it was a relief.

I am still pretty worried that some people will try and take advantage of this, but with the STB community being fairly close knit, it should help keep the nefarious away.

Tissue warning. http://www.thespec.com/news-story/6225107-the-last-horse-life-after-the-fire/

Another effort to help those affected by the fire:

Charity auction on. Looks like some nice TB, QH and STB stallions on the list.

Some good news for Chantal Mitchell - Rakin It In, the only horse the trainer has left (he was racing the night of the fire), broke his maiden on Tuesday. Nice article and race video here:

And, the GFM site is now over $300,000! Lovely to see the support.

I was in tears when I saw her horse won… so happy for her.
And it keeps growing… it seems to have slowed down a bit, but I think there will be purses donated to the fund too.

Oh dear, there was another barn fire, this time in Mount Forest, Ontario. Arabians this time. At least a dozen. :frowning:

They “think” a tractor started this one…
The non-horsey armchairs commentators are at it again…but smoke detectors would not help… how would you hear it from a house? I guess there is a lot to be said for horses to live outside… but people die in fires too… does that mean we should all live in tents.
I am so sorry and this year has been so bad so far for horses and humans…

Likely a tractor plugged in so it would start in the morning.

Yeah, the armchair commentators spouting about the rich horse people all killing their horses for the insurance etc really get to me too.

In this case they seem to totally have missed that there were people trying to get the horses out. On Canada AM the fire chief said that horses are particularly difficult in fires, but these morons don’t let things like that get in the way of spouting their opinions anyway.

Just checked the Classy Lane GFM and it’s up to $320,080.

this is a bad bad year for barns/farms
http://london.ctvnews.ca/goats-perish-in-barn-fire-outside-of-delaware-1.2740637#_gus&_gucid=&_gup=Facebook&_gsc=owWgtuU

I know that many fire departments (Burlington, Oakville, etc.) are offering to come to farms to check their installations and I hope many farm owners take them up on their offers.
http://www.burlington.ca/en/services-for-you/Barn-Fire-Prevention.asp

The GFM stands at C$331K…

I heard a rumour as to the cause of the fire… it would make sense, but since it is only a rumour (although from close to the source), I will leave it at that.

and a pig farm today… 2100 pigs… please stop!

and the GoFundMe passed the $380K!! impressive!

Wow, this is getting scary. Are these farms all in a similar area?

They are all within an hour-ish of each other. It is kind of peculiar…

GFM is over $412K… I believe they will reach their goal of $500K…

Yes all these fires are started to look suspicious but it’s winter and people use extension cords, heaters, etc. without really thinking… so sad for all the animals.
