Yes, the title of the thread, the person named there in that video, is what we are discussing and veering off into other people’s issues only serve to confuse
Totally agree, the person I was replying to was commenting on the name of a rider that (incorrectly) appeared on a deleted video. Definitely veering off topic!
I wasn’t talking about the rider’s name. I didn’t use it.
I was talking about why this horse is not able to perform to expectations, over and over again … the thing that led one rider to fail to master her frustration with this horse. As it has been described in this thread.
The horse didn’t perform because HUMANS that put the horse in that situation … got it wrong.
What this rider in the video was doing didn’t begin and end with her fall and reaction. She lost her temper because the horse was set up to fail. She didn’t accept that.
But, from what’s been shared, the others who rode before her, or perhaps the horse’s owner, didn’t accept it, either. Fortunately they didn’t react as this rider did. But nonetheless, they kept at it, even though the horse was failing.
We’ve all been there. Asked for the wrong thing at the wrong time – unintentionally, of course. Got a big dose of frustration and disappointment.
It’s how we react then that matters. But it’s also not setting up these situations that are an unfair ask to the horse in the first place. That’s a problem, too.
That’s what has been presented to us in this thread.
I’m confused.
Kate Conover rode the horse the day before the video in the original post? It does not look like that from a results search on the USEF website, if the video actually came from the show mentioned in Texas in November.
Regardless, the reaction of the rider in the video would be completely inappropriate coming from a young kid falling off a pony in a walk-trot class.
Much less from anyone over the age of 18. Still less from a professional.
No. Some people are discussing a video of a completely different horse and different round that was not posted here. This OTHER video was deleted from Facebook because it had a rider’s name (Kate Conover) shown on screen when that was NOT the rider in the saddle and abusing the horse.
It has caused confusion for a lot of us. A few posters are stuck discussing comments about that rider and horse when it isn’t the subject of this thread and not what is shown in the video.
It would be helpful if people either deleted those posts about the entirely different event, or edited and clarified. Muddying the waters isn’t helping. I’m taking a Facebook break myself, so this thread is the first I’m hearing of Slik and this occurrence.
Ah, ok. Thanks.
Yeah, it threw me off too for a bit
Circling back to the original topic. Original video is here: https://www.facebook.com/watch/?v=1561719224547539
Looks like Marieke’s social pages are all down.
My reading comprehension might be messed up due to confusion and disbelief.
That video posted by @FieldMack of … MS on grey horse (is grey horse Mr. ??)
She’a a professional???
Wasn’t that the same combination as the picture of Kentucky in Fall 2024 where they appear to do being the 3’6? Based on the Jumbotron with MS and Mr.
Why is she jumping like sub 2’6 (and POORLY like poor fundamentals) with said horse 3 - 4 months later
How tf did she stay on in KY over 3’6??
I don’t think it’s really relevant or necessary to have a big discussion about anyone’s riding ability or show experience or anything else.
The issue at hand is the extremely inappropriate treatment of the horse after a fall.
As I said in my previous post, it would be extremely inappropriate at any level from a walk trot class to a Grand Prix.
I read in the fb comments that this was from a show back in November. Based on her USEF records and classes that she rode at that show it looks like it was a different horse, not owned by her.
If it’s the horse I think it is, he hasn’t been to another show since the incident.
What I was asking was IS THAT THE SAME PERSON because that feels insane
No shit her treatment is inappropriate. She should be banned from all competition & fined heavily.
was just asking because I find it so bizarre that a pro would remotely behave this way
Final Chase. My friend was there and witnessed it. It was even worse than what the video showed (more happened off video- allegedly, aka from my friend who was an eye witness). There were MANY eye witnesses. The steward interviewed people. My friend personally submitted an abuse report to USEF, just to be sure.
I’ve seen a few mutual friends comments on some of the posts speaking of what happened after the cameras turned off as well. JUST WOW.
I guess I’ll say I’m surprised but it’s not surprising.
I am actually surprised its Marieke, because way back when I sold saddles in that territory, she seemed to be one of the more quiet type, good ones that really cared for the horses. My boss and her had mutual connections in Europe, he liked going to her place and chat, and we wound up sponsoring her and selling a few saddles to her kids (she has sense switched sponsors). She didn’t show much, but she had a good barn full of youth that needed saddles (way more important IMO than how high you jump ), and she’s bred and imported some very successful horses. The horses always seemed well cared for, granted we were never surprise visitors, and the visualized training techniques were normal… nothing like that. It’s been over 5 years, but I guess you really do never truly know a person in this industry, which is the part that’s no longer surprising.
What makes me sad, then, is she teaches kids. Kids are so impressionable, and they may think this is okay, or normal, even if they are “told” otherwise. Seeing it leaves an impression.
I think folks are misunderstanding my comments
I was asking if it was the same person because I cannot imagine someone skilled enough to make it around a huge A show at 3’6 on ANY horse with a long standing background of breeding and importing some pretty nice horses…
is the same person riding like that over 2’6, falling off GENTLY and then WAILING on said horse.
call me naive, but that’s bonkers to me that the same human with “all this experience” behaves like that related to a poorly ridden 2’6 line where she tumbles off as gently as one possibly could.
I was merely asking if the grey was the same horse that she jumped 3’6 because I would jokingly make claims that she’s using a body double for her 3’6 rounds
I couldn’t fathom it being the same PAIR. Looks like she’s a crappy pro who can ride her own horses and freaks out due to ego when she is checked by another animal on her [lack of] riding ability
Eh - anyone can have a crap day. Heat stroke, bad meds, migraine, injury, heck, even really terrible cramps can knock you off your game. And it doesn’t take terribly much if you’re out of position to knock you over. She wasn’t riding defensively for whatever reason, and found out.
The emotional reaction to the fall suggests that something was off if indeed she was not riding above her normal level of ability. Beating a horse for doing normal horsey things is never acceptable, and that’s what it appeared to be.
Either way - again, horrific and I feel for that poor horse.
Possible that a recent head injury is a factor?

Abusers are good at covering their tracks.
If someone’s instincts are to immediately beat their horses neck and face, you know it’s not the first time.
