It does look like there’s some data about vaccine induced kidney injury in people, so it’s definitely not crazy that it could occur in horses, too. Although it sure sucks to be that one in a million, I’m so sorry.

Here are some papers for anyone curious:

https://journals.lww.com/sjkd/fulltext/2019/30050/vaccine_associated_kidney_diseases__a_narrative.1.aspx

https://academic.oup.com/qjmed/article-abstract/117/5/317/7218935

It looks like most recovered well, so that’s hopeful?

Very interesting. Thanks for sharing this.

I know going to the kidneys doesn’t seem to be a thing in horses… but that doesn’t mean it can’t happen as a vaccine response.

My guess we just don’t pull enough blood to figure out what’s going on all the time.

yeah we had some serious reactions with Fort Dodge vaccines

My younger daughter is a working vet tech, wife was in the first group of licensed vet tech in Kentucky she had license number 33.(later became registered nurse)… we give all vaccinations under the direction/oversight of our vets

in human medicine, vaccine manufacturers pay a small tax on each vaccine sold, to cover the costs of catastrophic outcomes. In my previous career, as a psychopharmacologist, I learned that any drug can do anything. Taking a drug is like going on a cross country trip, the drug doesn’t just go to its target organ, it goes everywhere. It’s quite mysterious why some unlucky persons and animals have unexpected and disastrous outcomes from benign drugs, but it happens. this is completely unpredictable and devastating to the affected families and animal owners. I also know that the body can, and does recover from some pretty severe adverse drug events. I hope the op’s horse is one.

Update — a little good news!!! :heart::heart:

Creatinine was below 5 for the first time and her hematocrit is down!!

This is the first meaningful jump down in days. Waiting on this mornings blood test and the results of a bone marrow aspiration they did yesterday.

So yesterday they dealt with a very high hematocrit count she has had along with the kidney/creatinine issues. They pulled 8L of blood off her and replaced with 10L of fluids. The idea that for whatever reason - we haven’t been able to find one - her high hematocrit meant the kidneys aren’t getting enough blood to do their job. So - thin it out and see what we have. Welcome to the Middle Ages. I don’t care if it works.

They also pulled a little bone marrow to see what’s happening with how she produces blood. So that’s either going to show us that she has her own personal issue or there is nothing wrong and the weirdness continues.

Reviewing all of her bloodwork going back years - no issues. PCV/hematocrit always well in the normal range.

I had walked her last night. She was very comfortable and perky even after her blood letting. She had some spark back.

This sh*t is hard!!

Have a great day everyone. I’m going to the gym and taking care of myself today.

Yesss!! Super news!!

Wow, that is just fascinating about the fluid replacement! Like, the “gateway” to the kidneys is clogged somehow, so thinner blood may be able to pass more easily? Just…wow.

SO HAPPY to see she’s feeling better and her numbers are improving!

Absolutely!! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve found random info that helped on a forum so if this helps someone one day because it comes up in a search - that’s the entire point. Also - I need a distraction. :joy:

Fort Dodge was purchased by Pfizer, who then separated their animal health products into the standalone company Zoetis.

Merial and Boehringer Ingelheim (BI) merged.

Just a heads up if you are trying to only buy from certain manufacturers.

EDIT- I see the vets called the drug company and they’re helping cover it sounds like at least something towards your bill. Yeay and sounds like your mare is hanging in there still!

Weird they don’t want to call. Usually the drug companies are pretty good about stepping up and helping out with reactions.

Several years ago 3 or 4 my dogs tested positive for Lyme. My vet called the drug company and they paid for treatment for all 3.

Sending prayers.

Get yourself a little treatie too, after the gym if that is your thing. I think you’ve earned a nice post-blood-letting slash workout treat.
