Horse in Puerto Rico

There is a horse I’ve been following since 2013 who is running at Camarero Race Track and just finished last by 60+lengths. Ran in 2012 Belmont and dropping in class since 2015. Anyone know how to get ahold of someone in Puerto Rico? I am concerned and have tried to contact an OTTB rescue and racetrack official there with no luck. Would like to get this horse off the track and into a rehab facility. Any ideas?

Do you know who owns him? Call them. Most Puerto Ricans are bilingual.

There is a group on facebook who works with them. Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare. They pull horses from PR tracks and try and get them back to breeders in the states. Call them as soon as possible If the horse finished last by 60 lengths, scary for sure! I heard they lead horses daily to the euthanasia area :frowning: . Makes me sick,.

Try reaching out to Lucinda Finley at Finger Lakes Finest. She recently was able to get an OTTB back from PR to the states. She may have some suggestions or contacts.

Here’s an article on Caribbean Throughbred Aftercare from today’s Paulick Report:

Best of luck getting him off the track and back to the States.

I follow Shelley Blodgett on Twitter and they are getting many horses back to the States from PR. If you are on Twitter @ShelleyBlodgett

Please keep us posted, especially if funds need to be raised.

Unstoppable U? http://www.equibase.com/profiles/Results.cfm?type=Horse&refno=8684506&registry=T I would definitely try the contact at Finger Lakes for tips–she might even remember the horse since that was his last track before he sold to PR. $9000/start average with over $300,000, he’s been a work horse for a long time. Let us know if there’s any drabbles needed.

Yes, Unstoppable U. Working on it.

Hi All, I’m Shelley Blodgett of Caribbean Thoroughbred Aftercare, Inc. Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/horserescue/ & Website: http://adoptcaribbeanottb.org/adopt/ I’m in Florida and my partner Kelley Stobie is in PR (She’s been rescuing TBs for over a decade, and we incorporated CTA in Nov 2016 and have 501c3 application is review now). We have been working for months re Unstoppable U. His breeder wants him retired to his farm, but the owners want to continue racing him for now. Kelley has met with them and seen the horse, and has spoken to the vet several times. He was recovering from a hoof abcess and has breathing issues, so we hope they will figure out his good racing days are behind him. He looks MUCH better bow than when he first arrived in PR (he’s gained weight, lost his winter coat, and his coat is shiny, and swelling in one leg is down). I cannot share everything, but he is on our radar and his owners, trainer, & vet know we want to retire him and return him to his breeder. It’s best to go through CTA and not call owners directly. CTA won’t buy or claim horses (we cannot afford it AND it leads to all owners and trainers demanding money when they should retire their horses for free… For example, we have an owner asking for $800 to retire a FL-bred horse with 134 starts when we have a good TAA sanctuary home lined up and would need to raise $5,000 to get him there). I hope you understand our policy. Kelley is an equine rehab therapist and has a lot of connections at the track. I organize our WatchList and other data, and do the majority or networking, grantwriting, and fundraising, esp for US horses (we’ve returned 8 since July 2016!). You can always message us via our website or facebook, or follow me on Twitter @ShelleyBlodgett and @CaribbeanOTTB ~ Best, Shelley

thanks for helping these horses! I inquired to his breeder about Arch Traveler a while back but they weren’t interested in bringing him back. hes been running badly as well. he was a super nice horse in his day.

Wow he is lovely. Such a shame what occurs in PR> Such a waste of such lovely horses.

Arch Traveler has a pretty nice race record and pretty dandy pedigree as well :frowning:

Great!

Wondering if there is any hope for Springcourt? He is a Kris S grandson who went to PR I guess more than a year ago. I am so concerned for his welfare; he runs often.

There was an old thread a few years ago about the horses who were then being sent to PR and what awaited them.
Thanks to everyone trying to get some of these back home for retirement.

Thanks to all who are helping horses move from poor situations to safety.

Thank you so much Shelley. I am so glad to hear the breeder has a place for him. He looks great and I’m relieved that he is being looked after. He definitely deserves it.

Arch Traveler is on the Caribbean TB Aftercare “Watch List”. My partner in PR visited him today and made sure they know we’ll help him retire (it’s getting them to retire horse without being paid that’s the hard part, but CTA won’t buy horses as it sets a bad precedent and causes problems with demands for money). We are going to keep tabs, reminding the connections that AT has only won $1,950 in 8 starts this year (he’s costing more to keep than he’s earning). One good thing is CTA has another horse from the same connections retired in April, so hopefully they are open to retiring to us again. We just added Springcourt to our Watch List (we let connections know we’ll help retire horse and try to keep tabs).

If we manage to retire Arch Traveler, we will definitely ask Monticule Farm if they would give him lifetime sanctuary (we’ve had 4 breeders given such to their runners recently: Swinging at Siro’s (Berkshire Stud in NY), You’re My Buddy (Airdrie Stud in KY), Ender’s Universe (Green Lantern Stables / Golden Age Farm in KY; he’s a 1/2 bro to A.P. Indian, who will also retire to the same fields), and Merry Berry (ThornMar Farm in Maryland). We could offer to raise $ to get him there, if needed, if they agree to sanctuary.
