Horse isn't crazy about Platinum Performance - ideas? UPDATE and new issue

Has anyone encountered a picky eater who isn’t a fan of PP? I started him on it a week ago and while he will eat most of his grain, he’s leaving some behind every feeding and isnt enthusiastic about eating it. Any ideas to make it more palatable for him?

If you started with the full dose, you may need to start back with a fraction of that and slowly increase over time.

Introduce it more gradually. I have a picky eater too and that scoop of PP is large.

Start with maybe a quarter of the scoop and very slowly increase it until you are up to the full serving size.

Ok I’ll try that, thanks guys! This is my HOOVER horse who eats anything so I’m really surprised he’s being so weird about PP…he’ll even eat bute powder straight :sigh:.

Switch to a pelleted supplement

The don’t make a pelleted version

I have to laugh as I had the same experience. My horse that will eat pretty much anything and everything would not go near the PP. I did try starting with small amounts as others suggested and some things to mask it a bit (he loves bananas so tried smashing one in with it)…nothing would convince him to eat it. I gave up and used it up on another horse of mine. This is a horse that has eaten crazy things like ham sandwiches and breakfast burritos but PP was poison to him.

Oh no, don’t tell me that :lol: I wonder what it is about it they don’t like? It smells pretty good, I don’t quite understand what he’s objecting to!

Oh I know. But other companies make very similar products :). PM me if interested in a sample.

Mine will not TOUCH platinum …or anything that resembles ground flax…I finally had to go to Wellpride for some Omega 3s. It’s processed fish oil w some lemon flavor. Weirdly enough he scarfs that stuff up…

Mine isn’t a fan of very powdery meals but likes flax-based supplements fine in a mash. Is soaking his ration an option?

I previously had good luck with SmartPak’s pelleted macronutrient supplements, if you just can’t get this stuff down him.

I tried soaking his grain this morning and he ate even less than usual. UGH! I may have to call Platinum Performance and see if I can get a refund on a brand new ~$100 tub that he won’t eat. Horses…

Did you try backing off to just a fraction of the serving size?

Yes, tried just 1/4 of a scoop, still a no go…called PP and they said to try 1/4 scoop mixed with applesauce for a few days to see if he gets used to it. Fingers crossed!

I have to say that when I had my guys on PP CJ, they would eat it all but they wouldn’t exactly scarf it down.

I switched to T.H.E. Muscle Mass (custom blend with inflammatory and joint support) and man they scarf that stuff down! I didn’t have a problem with the PP CJ but I switched b/c T.H.E. was a little cheaper and the portion size was way smaller. It was a good bonus that my horses like the flavor much better (an apple cinnamon type flavor).

Exceed 6 way is a similar and great product from MVP. May be a good alternative to check out.

UltraCruz has a pellet that’s supposed to be similar. My horse loves PP, and he’s picky! No idea what it is that your horse doesn’t like.

They have several flavors as well. Mine did not like apple, they wanted the cinnamon spice one…

Thanks, all. He’s still being finicky. I’m only mixing in 1/4 scoop with applesauce and top dressing his grain but he’ll take a bite and spit it out. To clarify, this is the PP GI - this horse has chronic loose manure along with fecal liquid squirts and I’ve tried MANY different supplements with no success. I was hoping the pre/probiotics along with the BioSponge that is in the GI formula would help him out, but since he won’t eat it…bring on the suggestions

Oh…your version includes biosponge? That’s a definite YUCK from all of mine. The only one that would eat it readily was the IR horse that ate anything, and I had to make sure it was fully distributed among his soaked pellet mix (no clumps of clay – since that is pretty much what biosponge is). The others all have required lots of apple juice or some yummy mixer and even then, I usually gave up and syringed.
