To do that:
You have to be on a computer and not a mobile device 
Go to your profile

Hover over the mystery head picture that you currently show
Click the “edit avatar” button that comes up

Use the little handle thingies to set what part of the pic you’d like to display

@Dr. Doolittle, if you can email your pic to yourself and save it to your desktop (drag and drop from your email window?) then you should be able to proceed as above.
This all really isn’t much different than, say, attaching a file to an email on your computer. Does that resonate at all?
Simkie, what is the approx dimension/size that it needs to be? I have in mind a photo but will need to crop it to some size and I’d like a target (Ie, square, rectangle, approx aspect?) It looks like you can size the avatar but if I can get close before I go to upload, it would be nice
@Dr. Doolittle You could also upload to a place like photobucket and then use the URL option instead of the select a file option, if that is easier to navigate
It displays as 80 x 80, if you’d like to crop it before uploading. I don’t know if there is a limit for uploading–the pic I’m using is a bit large at 5 MB and 5312 x 2988 and didn’t generate any errors.
I found it easier to just upload and play with the cropping from within COTH

Found the pic (on FB), saved it, but wasn’t able to attach it somehow?? Ugh. I have a new Chromebook and I can’t figure out how to move things to the desktop :sigh:
I did USED TO be able to do this on my Acer! Will ATTEMPT to attach the photo to an e-mail.
I am always left wondering WHY all of this has to be so complicated. My daughter, of course, finds it completely intuitive and doesn’t understand why I (at 60!) do not. SO VERY MUCH do not…:dead:
But I have a full size raw file that has a bunch of background “stuff” - was thinking to do a bit of post processing on it before I finished the crop - normally not a big fan of avatars but I think I have one or two photos that I quite like

Do I need to enable Show Avatars so that I see everyone’s avatars to get mine to show up?
Mildly annoyed as my photos are not on the connected hard drive so I have to move the desired image to my hard drive so the browser will see it
I see yours, but if you’d like to see it too, I assume you have to see all of them. It’s pretty!!
Once it’s uploaded, it’s housed on COTH, not linked. You don’t need to preserve a connection to the file.

I have avatars blocked so what you’re seeing (and I’m not) makes sense - I don’t see anyone’s including mine but nice it did show up!
Simkie, what I meant is that when I went to ‘browse’ to upload the file (clicking the browse button) it only shows files on my hard drive… does not include my USB drive where my photos live. I did assume the image itself was uploaded to COTH-land somewhere

Yes, I did see the photo in my profile (and I cropped and post-processed in a “square” so when I uploaded it, all I had to do was resize the box to the full photo )
This isn’t the first time I’ve encountered “limited” file browsing when an app is asking to browse for a file. Don’t know how it behaves on Win or anything other than Mac+Safari (since that is what I use the most. PITA but not insurmountable for the few times I will actually want to upload a photo. I kinda like the current one (a “rectangular” version is on the back of my personal business card (is that an oxymoron?). When you’re tired of it, let me know and I’ll pick another… I had about 15 that I was mulling over
