How do you carry water in your trailer?

I think I might want to carry a small amount for emergencies or if there is no water at a trailhead. 10 gal? 20 gal? I have a 2 horse gooseneck with small dressing room. I didn’t want to add a lot of weight or spend $100 if not necessary.

Go to Wally World
go to the boating or camping section
buy two of the blue water ‘cans’ - they look like the gas cans you’d fill up if you ran out, they come in different sizes, I think 10 gallons is pretty standard sized, probably run you 15 bucks.

Skip the el cheapo collapseable ones, they leak like crazy.

BassPro has these, so would Academy, I bet…

Just dump and rinse between uses and recap lightly so they can air out and dry out…

I’ve got 2 16 gallon tanks attached to each side of my 3 horse trailer behind the fender. They are retrofitted round storage barrels with a spigot added and attached to the fenders with seat belt webbing. Works a treat. For my big trailer, I’ve got a 48 gallon 1/2 moon tank and a 40 gallon tank that sits under the gooseneck. It’s nice to have water on hand for that first water in the morning or before bed. I’ve used the portable water cans, which worked well also.

You can just put a plastic garbage bags inside a couple of 5 gallon buckets, fill and twist tie the tops closed.

Or you can buy a couple of new plastic Kerosine 5 gallon jugs, and clearly mark them WATER.

Large Igloo coolers also hold 5 gallons.

If you just need a couple buckets - 1 for horse to drink, 1 for sponging water lets say - then I 2nd the plastic bag in a bucket idea. I use it all the time for trail rides with friends or schooling shows off the trailer. Just line your bucket like you would a trash can, fill with water, and twist the top shut.

I use 5 gallon plastic gas cans. I marked them a sharpie so they will always be used for water. Cheap and easy.

I also have big blue jugs like the ones katarine mentioned.

I use the 5 gallon plastic gas containers. I like something that I can actually lift. I put the containers in the bed of my truck. Generally I take 10 gallons with me but I never do really long or overnight trips.

We have the 39 gallon slant water tank shown here:

It doesn’t take any room in the corner and is fairly inexpensive at $25.

Happy Trails~

Those water tanks-they are closer to $100 shipped-althogh I have a straightload so not sure it would fit. I like the idea of putting the water in the truck, anyway, in case it spills.

I will investigate Walmart!

Exactly…these are great! I have 4 of them! 10.00 each if I recall correctly and has a spigot.

My Brother in Law runs a dairy, He gets a disinfectant that he cleans his milk lines with after milking. It comes in a 15 gallon mini barrel. He throws away one of those every 2 weeks. I just asked him to save me a couple and I use them. They are free and made from a really tough plastic. Buy a spigot for $1 at WalMart.

I figure if what ever was in the barrel to start with is safe to flush through milk lines, Then it will be safe horse water after I rinse them out a couple of times.

My trailer also has a 35 gallon standing tank in the tack room behind the saddle rack. So short trips, I just use that, longer weekends, I bring along 2-3 of the 15 gallon jugs in addition.

The blue ones from Wal-Mart are Aquatainers. I use 'em too! I usually carry 3 full ones so I have plenty of water for drinking and sponging off after a hot ride.

I have a couple of these: http://compare.ebay.com/like/360384313130?var=lv&ltyp=AllFixedPriceItemTypes&var=sbar
I like them because they have a spigot and all I have to do is lay it on it’s side on a raised surface and place my bucket under it. They are stackable too! (you can turn the spigot so it is on the inside of the container.

I wouldn’t do this for a day ride, but we used a 65 gallon one of these last year for camping:

We just upgraded to this 150 gallon for this year. The 65 gallon would last almost three days, but we were empty every time we came home. On the longer 3-4 day weekends, we ended up having to carry water from the local source.

Now, we’ll have PLENTY. We stick it in the bed of the truck in the front, so that it’s over both axles. Use a drinking water grade hose with a couple of shut-off valves to the back of the bed, and there ya go.

Best part is, when not in use, they fold up to about the size of a folded pillow case - no storage room needed. Easy Peasy.

I actually went to the store and bought two of the empty water bottles that would normally go on a water dispenser for people (like a water cooler at an office). The store sold them to me at the price of the return deposit that is on them. i just set one in my muck bucket and if I need the other one, it will be stacked in amongst the other stuff i have to take. handy to carry, and cost me $10 for both of them. And, you can return them and get new ones if the tops break/they get a bit scummy!

Thanks for all the suggestions! I haven’t haunted the camping section much-yet!

Yup, the aqua blue containers from WalMart like others have said. I have quite a few of them. If really super hot out, I take 2-3 so I can rinse the horse really well before heading home. Never know if you will need extra water out there. Or maybe you will need to rinse the trailer out before heading home?? No such thing as too much water. Ha Ha.

I use 2 plastic gas can and have labeled them, in sharpy, Water Only. I fill them both up, they don’t take up that much room, and put them in the tack area of my trailer. I store them in my barn, with the caps off to let them air out. If you keep them air tight all the time, the inside will keep that plastic smell and will make the water taste funny. I’d rather have too much water than not enough.

I have 2 new plastic gas containers, marked with a sharpie as ‘WATER ONLY’, that live in my horse trailer.

My mare is a good drinker on the road, and on a hot day will drink one container. The other is for rinsing off the sweat after a ride.

Also, I’d put a single starlight mint in the containers for my other horse who was picky. It would disolve by the time we got to where we were going. He loved the water with the mint in it.
