How Do You Choose a Show Name?

I’ve never had to come up with a show name for a horse before. Previous mounts have either had a registered name, or an already established show name. My cob is an unregistered PMU mutt with only a handful of schooling shows at our last barn under his belt.

How do people choose their horse’s show name? What is and isn’t kosher for the hunter ring (cob is going to be primarily showing hunters for the forseeable future. Might throw in some dressage for the exposure)?

I’m a super noob when it comes to hunters, haha. The few hunter shows I’ve done in the past, my coach at the time filled out my entries for me (I was 10-13 years old) and I’m 99% sure she just used the horses’ barn names.

I think when you choose something that is meaningful to you, you can’t go wrong. For hunters, ponies seem to have cute names; the names of horses seem to vary, alot of times because because some WB registries dictate what the name had to start with (letter).

I would just pick something that you like. Do you know anything about the pony’s bloodlines even though it’s unregistered?

What is his barn name? What does he look like.

I looked for something that suited my mare’s personality.
Beautiful but kind of evil= we show as Bellatrix

The pony showed as Pumpkin Pie, because that is what her kid chose.

as others have said - the name can be anything that means something to you, a play on their breeding or color, movie or book characters, places.

Pony in question is a 14.1hh draft cross. I was always told by his originally-bought-him-from-auction owner that he’s percheronXqh but it’s doubtful. Much more likely to be belgianXmorgan (assuming he’s actually a PMU pony and not some random BYB mutt. But I’ll never know for sure) based on his colour and movement. Barn name is Java. Wild bay rabicano with a hind left sock, star/snip/white lower lip.

While people have called him flashy, he’s definitely more dorky. Seriously, these two pictures describe him to a T:

On the other hand, he does have the ability to be fancy:

And one last shot to show how roan he’s getting this year (yay rabicano!) https://scontent-a-sea.xx.fbcdn.net/hphotos-prn2/t31.0-8/10286765_10152397439861737_2198407725363429149_o.jpg

I’m leaning towards something tea-related, because he’s known locally as the tea-drinking pony, and has a huge fan club with a Canadian tea company. I originally liked Ceylon Star, but someone locally took it for their horse, who will be competing in the same classes at the same shows that my guy will be, so I’m switching (since they’re already showing that circuit and pony won’t be til the June date). A friend of mine insists that he go by Java Bean Supreme [insert eye roll here]…

“Ceylon Star” is my OTTB’s registered name!

That’s so cool!!! “Ceylon Star” is also the name of a tea blend that Java and I helped create. Sadly it’s being discontinued after an 18 month run :frowning: But we’re being sent a large amount of it, so hopefully I can stretch it out by only letting Java (and myself) enjoy it for special occasions, instead of multiple times a week as we usually do, haha.

When I bred my colt, I knew the name had to start with a B. the sire is Bon Balou and i wanted the “Bon” and I thought he would be chestnut, so I named him Bonaducci, barn name Danny (just spell it differently and he ended up bay, but I love it)

He’s cute. How about “Constant Comment”?

For my OTTB, I played off of his JC name. His JC name is “Moments Work” but I changed it a little to “A Moments Worth”

My Appendix QH’s registered name is “You Bet Im Sweet” but I didn’t really like that enough for open shows. I decided on “King Creole” b/c I am from south Louisiana and wanted something sort of southern-y. Plus, I have a pair of Elvis boot socks which made me think of King Creole (It’s an Elvis movie).

First off, your guy is adorable. I like the tea theme. Also, maybe a coffee team. Look up different types of beans or roasts. For example, Starbucks has a roast called “Pike Place” Something like that could be cute.

David’s Tea? I live on their Assam, and I also really like the blueberry jam flavor.

To stay with the tea theme: Dragon Pearl, Earl Grey, Golden Monkey or, as Dewey suggested, Constant Comment.

Thoroughbred in Color: Bingo! The regional store manager is going to be coming out to meet Java next time she’s in town so she can get pictures with him and brag to head office apparently, haha!

I actually like when there are rules to naming, like when certain studs’ offspring needs to being with a certain letter. It makes life a wee bit easier (but at the same time limiting, but it’s at least a starting point).

Constant Comment is in my top 10 for sure, for more reasons than simply being a tasty tea. I’ve come to the conclusion that it’s impossible not to love my little guy when you meet him, because even my horse-hating mother when she met him for the first time said “He’s REALLY cute, I can see why you couldn’t let him go”. Haha!

So far the list includes (in no specific order):
Constant Comment
Tea for Two
Teas N Beans
I’m a Little Teapot
Bear Trap (this one is a bit of a running joke. My nickname is Bear, and Bear Trap is also the first David’s Tea blend I ever tried and first looseleaf I owned, and Java definitely “trapped” me in a perpetual loop of loving him so… haha)
Over the Rainbow
Teas Me (haha)
Java Bean Supreme (there’s a few different Cookies and Cream in the area though)
Chai on Life
Teddybear Picnic
Big Red Robe (type of oolong)
Happy Kombucha
Ceylon Night

If it wasn’t going to make me a horrible person I’d go with I’m a Little Teapot, because it makes me smile and suits pony’s dorkiness to a tea (haha) but I feel like it wouldn’t exactly be well-received in the real world

Rooibos, Tea Time, Four o’ Clock, A Touch of Cream

I like Teas Me & Chai On Life.

Teddybear Picnic, Tea For Two, Chai On Life, and Bear Trap definitely suit him! Cute and classy!

Tea and Toast. Darling song by Lucy Spraggan.

I LOVE I’m a Little Teapot! That’s my vote. And he is so freakin’ adorable. Have fun with him.

My horse’s barn name is Ham (short for Hampton) and he’s a buckskin. His original show name was supposed to be HRH Buckingham. I thought HRH for “His Royal Highness” was kind of cute because he has a very high opinion of himself, and Buckingham was a play on his color and his barn name.

Unfortunately, when I went to go apply for his USEF horse ID, there were like 50 Buckinghams listed. OK, that’s an exaggeration, but still…there were a lot! So, I ended up choosing the name of a song by my favorite alternative rock band.

Love I’m a Little Teapot. Can’t see what the “real world” objection would be.
