How far North are the barn swallows?

Ta Da!
Finally spied 3 or 4 little Angrybird heads peering from the nest

AND
First hummingbird at the feeder!!!

My Summer has now officially started.

They ARE flying! Yay! Some are just hatched, but others are ready to go-- good sign for a second batch

Tornto area - We have 7 of the nests where the parents are sitting on their second batch of eggs.
Sure keeps the bugs down!

I had a nest of 5 take first flight yesterday. Another batch has maybe a week to go, and I have one nest with parents sitting on eggs.

I have 9 nests, of which 2 have already grown and flown (7!) The rest of the nests have 3-4 each so a robust 1st fledging! Yay!

Groton MA

Mine have had their second batch (4) and haven’t been around for the last few
nights. Do miss them!

We are currently on the third batch.

i think mine have started a second batch

Gone - worcester, ma[/QUOTE]

Their absence is deafening!

Noticed tonight that the last of mine have left.

Same here. We just hear the sandpipers. I live near Lake Erie. They depart much later.

Mine are gone too from Texas

Mine are gone also. I did have ONE lone single solo monarch butterfly arrive a few days ago. A few years ago I had dozens. And I grow milkweed for them.

This was the first year that I let them build a nest in the barn. I have shooed them away every year. Never shooing them away again. They really were a joy to watch. I had 5 babies and 5 adults feeding them. I did not have a fly problem at all this year. The only thing that bothers me is that I think they were too overwhelming for my quiet bluebirds. The bluebirds left their second set of eggs in the nest and left. My swallows left this week.

Where do they go once they have fledged out? Do they stay in the area or immediately migrate? Miss them so much. I have noticed house sparrows moving into my barn - do I need to discourage them in order to keep my swallows happy next year?

I had two swallows left behind with fledgings in the nest a few weeks ago. Now there are two birds left in the nest (can’t tell if they are youngsters or oldies). What happens if they are here for the winter ?

I’m sure they will move on.
I had a couple of stragglers – one nest of 3 youngsters in one barn, and what seemed like a sole swallow in another barn. Everyone is gone now :frowning:

Some sparrows are squatting in the empty nests here as well, Pokesaladannie. I’ve never seen that last!

A few are still sticking around as of yesterday in Southern ON. Our last batch was done a few weeks ago, and they’ve since been flying around practicing catching insects. I counted 21 on the line at one point, so not a bad year.

The “BIG move” has started, which means it’s time for me to get out in the field. We’ve already had a few rarities come through here that I’ve missed out on as of yet!
