How far North are the barn swallows?

Saw one in the barn earlier this week- but not since then (Nokesville VA).

It’s 15 April and the swallows have not arrived. Not even a scout. This is the latest in 23 years of keeping records of their comings and goings. Last year was the earliest by two days: 27 March. IIRC, the year before was then the latest arrival: 12 April. It is such a worry.

I saw one checking out the barn yesterday, finally, in southern CT! Spring might finally be coming

In KY - our first barn swallow arrived on April 1st. There seem to be a few more every few days. Last year we counted over 40 nests, so we’re expecting quite a crowd. Thank goodness they allow us to use their barn

We saw one yesterday in Western RI! Only one swooping in the field but I imagine the rest are on their way.

Ours moved in (Seattle area) about 3 weeks ago. I had a near miss pooping incident and it startled me and took me a few panicked moments to realize that the roof was not falling, it was one of the swallows (that I then noticed chirping all around the rafters).

I’m up in Canada, southern Ontario, the red-winged blackbirds and robins are around but no sign of any of the barn swallows yet.

I’m in southern Middle Tennessee. No barn swallows. I’m afraid the Carolina Wrens that decided to nest in the barn have had something to do with my barn swallows not coming back. I miss my barn swallows:(

on on a good note, five pair of Purple Martins are back. We had three full houses last summer, when they headed for warmer climates, so we put up a fourth house. I hope more come back but we are not having our normal warm weather. We had a hard frost last night ---- pretty hard to catch mosquitoes when the frost keeps killing them.

Wow! That’s early! None here yet, but it should be soon

Was just thinking of this thread and wondering how close they are. No sign at all of our swallows in eastern IA. I’m glad actually that they’re not here yet, we had unusually cold, snowy spring so far, but it appears that’s all behind us now. It was so bad that we actually had RW Blackbirds at our feeder–have never seen them use the feeder before. If they could have thought bubbles it would have said “ummm, we need to re-think this whole migration BS.”

Was cleaning stalls this morning, and thought I heard the familiar chatter of a barn swallow. Sure enough, our scout has arrived! Southern Ontario (Niagara Region).

The scout has arrived here, too! Southern Ontario, South of Hamilton. Maybe spring is finally here to stay.

Here today too! South-western Ontario. I left the farm around noon, and they were not here. I went down to the barn around 3.30 pm - and something caught my eye… two of them, back in the barn, checking out the old nests.

I just hope the weather stays nice now, and they get some bugs to eat. My most favourite of birds. <3

First one arrived overnight - east central Iowa. He gets his pick of the best spot in the barn.

Saw my first one this weekend! Pennsylvania

They are here in northern MA - already about 10 of them.

I was missing them a week ago, but then I was away on work most of last week and there are now FOUR nests in the barn

SE PA - weather just broke last weekend to get warmer

I posted on 04-20 that I didn’t think I would see any. Lo and Behold, when I fed that night there was a scout in the barn!

It it took him a few days to find a mate but they are now in the process of cleaning out the original of three nests. I hope the egg laying is successful
