Just saw my first one in SE Michigan on Monday. Just one, but last year they didn’t come until late May so I was worried.
So now our birds are almost complete!
Tons of robins, red wing blackbirds, killdeer, mourning doves, starlings, and American Kestrels.
Are starlings are nesting and our American Kestrels are nesting again in the same place as last year! Super excited about them… they are so cool to watch and I’m pretty sure she is sitting on eggs… as I saw the male trying to get her to come out for a vole/mouse he caught for her. So exciting!
I’m so excited!! The swallows have arrived at the barn where I keep my horse! Just stepping in and very delighted to hear the happy chatter of the swallows
Just had to share, we watched one pair of swallows fledge all 5 in their nest the last 2 days. One baby flew off while we were watching, so exciting, wanted to cheer like a touchdown. Every few hours we’d check and progressively there was one less head in the nest - looks like they all made it. Second brood for this pair this year.
Other pair working on their second brood as well, three babies i think. Fingers crossed they will all make it.
This is SE PA.
So thrilled that the swallows had two broods in my stall this year. Last year they didn’t nest at all in my stall and I was so bummed.
Yay!!! I had two rounds this year, too. So cool.
The last set finally mastered their wings I did lose one who thought he could swim in the water tub. I’m sorry little bird
All my swallows had gone south by Aug 15th.
just wondering if anyone in the northeast has seen barn swallows … I have yet to see any in my barn
I am not in the NE, BUT I’m in southern Middle Tennessee and saw my first one this morning:)
maybe that’s a gauge as to when you will see yours:)
I’m not east, but I am north (Seattle area) and my first scouts showed up 2 days ago.
thank you walkinthewalk and PNWjumper I usually see a scout by now but NE has had colder weather this year than in past … hope to see them soon. I did see and hear the plover, and the pheobees / flocks of robins all that are a sure sign that the migration north is happening
I had scouts on March 27th. (Georgia) They celebrated with laps of the stable yard.
No swallows yet, but I heard the peepers loud and clear last night.
 Not a one here yet (Midwest) & one older nest - used for at least the last 3yrs - got knocked down.
BUT: still many more nests in the barn & indoor :encouragement:
So far the redwing blackbirds, cardinals, robins & woodpeckers (downy & red-bellied) are back.
This morning I saw a goldfinch, still in winter dress, but that unmistakable swoopy flight.
Starlings are setting up house in my barn, so soon the noisy fledglings will be here.
Sandhill cranes s/b making their way back to the sanctuary not too far from me - I keep expecting to hear the clacking…
Same here. Mid-Atlantic/north east. The peepers seem extra loud this year! I do feel a bit guilty as I knocked all of the mud nests out of the horse barn. I’m hoping they build new ones in the tractor barn instead where they won’t attack me and perhaps will save a few of their babies from my darned cats!
Heard peepers for the first time last night and am eagerly awaiting the first of the barn swallows. Typically the scouts arrive the first week of May but it has been a long and very cold winter so may be a bit delayed this year. Keep the posts coming so I know when to prepare for the celebration!!
One pair of swallows (so far) in my barn as of yesterday. :love-struck:
Arrived here 4/13.
That’s almost a week later than usual.
They showed up here a couple of days ago. Usually they don’t show up until May.
Long, cold winter here in Eastern Ontario. Temps still unseasonably cold this week.
I have also heard peepers for about 5 nights now, but no swallows.
Hope they show up soon - the may flies are already out.
