How far North are the barn swallows?

I’m wondering why my post, #616, is blank?
Can you see it? Do I need stronger glasses?

@leaf I can’t see your post 616 either. I’ve noticed several blank responses today on various posts from several people

They’re back!!! A set of scouts just swooped through the barn, their chirping stopped me in my tracks!!! Seems about a week/10 days early - NW CT

Yay! The first half dozen showed up yesterday in northern MA.
The barn cat has her grumpy face on.

Midwest & I finally saw my first pair this morning.
:encouragement:
Hoping they reuse the nests in my barn & indoor’s rafters. Some are at least 3yrs old!

They just arrived in Northwest WA state. The same pair are back fixing and cleaning their nest. Two dogs, the nest above my horse’s stall is at least 6 or more years old. They keep coming back, cleaning it up and having babies. So yours will probably re-use their old nests.

Just saw my first pair this year.

Hooray in NH …they arrived I think yesterday but today saw 8 playing and chatting this morning … made my day

Twin Cities. The first scouts announced themselves this morning (correction- there were two, not one). The end of winter, at last.

Question for those in the know about the swallows:

I had nests with mites last year and a lot of babies on the ground. Should I pull the old nests down before the swallows come back, and let them rebuild? Spray the old nests with fly spray? Something else?

Realize I should have figured this out before now!

The scouts have arrived to my barn in Eastern Ontario. It does seem quite early.

I’ve had these exact same questions!

I just saw our first scout back yesterday evening. Southwestern Ontario.

We pull ours down every few years and they rebuild. If you are convinced it is an issue with the nest then I would knock down and dispose of it. They are very adept at building and I am always amazed at how quick they can have a new nest ready. Occasionally have noticed some nests left empty for a few years and figure there must be a reason for it, so pull them down after they have left for the season.

I saw my first one yesterday, and now today a few have come zooming through the barn. How I love to hear their voices! I am in SW Ontario.

I’m not sure if it’s a problem with the nests themselves or the birds? Two years ago, mites weren’t a problem. Last year, the babies in the new nests were fine, but babies in the older nests had mites. Good bet to just yank out the nests and let them start over?

I’m pretty sure I saw a swallow zooming down the barn aisle and out the back door late this afternoon

This is a bit early.
It was pretty warm for a couple of days, but is now quite cool again. Calling for temps hovering just above freezing by the weekend.

I have six baby Swallows in one nest – SIX babies!:).

Five are finally sitting on a rafter. As usual there is one hold-out still staying in the nest, asking it’s parents to feed it – I was in the barn two hours and didn’t see them feed it:(. I know they need it to get out of the nest but I still feel bad:)

This is the first time in the sixteen years we have lived here that I have seen more than four babies! They are all big:)
