How far North are the barn swallows?

Wowzer… 6 babies!
After finding one of the early arriving scouts dead in a stall at the end of April (must have hit the window pane :frowning: ) I thought I might have no swallows this year.
But… I have 2 families.
Yay!
I ‘think’ there are now some babies, but I need a step stool and a mirror to look into the nests.

I heard babies in the nest today! Yay!

Full gang in PA!
4 nests in the barn and I just heard little squeeky noises yesterday!

Yay! For all of you with occupied nests:)

I mentioned earlier my pair pair raised SIX babies!

I am pretty sure they are sitting on another clutch of eggs! The dad has been doing most of the occasional feeding for the six young ones, which now roost on the highest barn rafter every night.

He is such a great dad and I am extra fond of him as I know for fact, he was born in that same nest last year. There were a couple of little indicators that made me think that but, when he took his wife up to the garage to roost at night, I knew he was one “my Barn Swallow Babies”, lol

I spotted a pair in the barn this week (SE MI), but don’t know where the nest is yet.
Last summer they were in a lean to out by the arena, but none in the barn. Last night the male was preening himself on a stall door while I got grain ready. They are so pretty! and this fellow at least is fairly bold.

I had some scouts last week in North Carolina! Haven’t seen nest construction yet, though there’s plenty of vacant ones to move into. I had 9 nesting pairs last year so I’m expecting a party pretty soon!

Mine arrived early last week! It’s so nice to have them back. We are in Middle TN, just south of Nashville.

Single scout arrived on 3/29, the exact same day as 2019. They are starting to file in now. We counted at least 60 nests in our 5 stall barn. They’ve been here for 12 years now! Soon we’ll be hearing a chirping barn from the house every morning. They are kind enough to let us keep our horses in their bird house.

Can hardly wait for them to show up in MA. They bring such a sense of light and positivity to the barn 😀.

We’ve had some unusually mild weather here in Eastern Ontario this spring
All the snow is already melted and I am anxiously waiting for the return of my swallows.

Still waiting for our barn swallows to return. We are starting to get a lot of “Mayflies” so am hoping that having tasty bugs to eat will lure them soon to my barn.

Arrived in central PA last week

My Barn Swallow pair ended up in a big fight and the female left - which I was glad the nasty little thing did leave. The male was born here. He is beautiful and was a good dad to his kids last year.

He has been staying in the barn alone and I’ve been worried there wouldn’t be any babies this year
”‹”‹”‹ but a few days ago, he came swooping and chirping into the barn with a new wife and she is very pretty!

I am so excited “my kid” has a new wife and hopefully I will see tiny beaks peeking over the edge of a nest:)

I have had Barn Swallows in my Barn for 17 years. I never seen a pair fight and get “divorced”. I am all ears for any thoughts:)

Mine decided the barn was too low class for their nest this year…so they built their new residence under the tongue of the gooseneck trailer. A perfectly made little mud nest, right at eye level so I can peek in on the babies every now and then.

However, this does mean I won’t be using my trailer anytime soon.

There is at least one here in northern Virginia. It was swooping overhead when I was lunging this afternoon. This evening, while I was feeding the horses, one (same one? I do not know) was flying around in the barn. The barn cat was paying WAY to much attention to the swallow. But I was able to convince it to go outside by turning on the outside lights and turning out most of the inside lights.

Still nothing at the barn where I keep my horse, I hope they show up soon.

Midwest & vacant nests from last year are still up…mostly.
Some have fallen or been destroyed by other barnbirds: starlings  & sparrows.
I count around 6 still usable in my small barn & know there are more in the indoor.
I have already seen 2 splattered starling eggs in the aisle, so might have a cowbird too.

@walkinthewalk :lol:
Never witnessed a “divorce”, but I did have one baby who refused to leave the nest.
No amount of parents’ encouragement worked, so they built a 2nd nest right next door for the 2nd clutch
