How far North are the barn swallows?

Nothing here, yet, but if they are making their way to your place, mine can’t be too far behind.

4 scouts checked in here yesterday. Eastern Ontario. So happy to see them. Does anyone know how the scout system works? It seems that they come about a week early, leave and then the whole gang shows up later. Wonder where the rest of the flock is during that time… are they days away and resting until the scouts collect them?

We got our first ones in Northern Massachusetts on the 17th. Only two pair at the moment, but our weather has been lousy - freezing in the mornings and snow one day.

First two in the Twin Cities (MN) this morning - looking tired but chattering away about how long a journey it was.

After some warm weather we’ve had a return to very cold this past week here in Eastern Ontario…
My back barn door at the end of the aisle was open but I had to shut it. I am going to open it up again tomorrow and hope…

Finally! 3 pairs arrived yesterday amongst much fanfare! (They were QUITE annoyed with me for actually being in the barn!) Massachusetts.

I hope the crew shows up where I keep my horse soon! Thought a scout was spotted a few days ago but haven’t seen anything since.

Mine finally greeted me this morning, with lots of chirping, and swooping.

Think I have a pair who are going to try nesting in my barn this year, and my neighbor told me he has a couple pairs at his place. Glad to have them back!

Today is the first day I have noticed them. I’m pretty sure that they just returned, or, I am battier than I thought!

Great capture!

We have a barn full of barn swallows, but also have another variety that flit around as well (they swoop like the barn swallows, but don’t have the long forked tail). I haven’t got good enough eyesight to identify them, so it’s really cool that you got photographic evidence!

They take bugs and wasps off the side of the house, but usually so fast that they still aren’t identifiable. This guy hovered for a sec right here, just long enough to see his cheeks! It was great, I was happy to see it.

The house wren babies spent 3 days in the barn before flying away. They mostly huddled together on the tack room floor, but did fly around the room a bit when interrupted. They flew to the second stall and spent a day there before flying off. It was cute- the babies all nested together in a corner. But it’s nice to have my barn back.

I thought about this thread last night as I sat on the deck checking the skies over the fields.

I haven’t personally seen any yet but the weather has warmed up so I’m expecting them back very soon.

A pair showed up in my barn a few days ago.

I saw a scout yesterday! Spring might finally be coming!

 They’re baaaaaccckkkk!
Saw a scout yesterday & this morning 2 pairs in the barn, arguing over who got the best of last year’s nests

Scouts arrived at the barn Friday, more flying around today. Sooooo happy to see them back!

Two days ago in Zeeland Michigan! Hope this year they don’t dive bomb the cats! I hate finding their wings & tailfeathers!

I saw one yesterday at the barn (NH)! Yay!

I just hope the starlings don’t bother them. Starlings are everywhere at the barn, eating cat food and making (I’ll admit) all kinds of entertaining noises while I am cleaning my stall. There’s a starling nest above my horse’s stall door. But I worry that they are driving off al other birds :frowning:
