How far North are the barn swallows?

Mine left early too. And my horses are growing their winter coats already. West Michigan Lakeshore.

So sad when they leave… my boy’s starting to look a bit fuzzier too :frowning:

Final fledge of the year. They had flight school this evening.

We had a huge crop this year, our barns and sheds were just full of nests, and each had at least 4 babies, x 2 hatches. The barn aisle and the air above my barn yard was so busy, I love it.
But now, most of them have left. We still have a few nests left to fledge.
And then, silence.
I just dread when they leave.

Mine were here last night when I mowed a bit but gone this evening, southern PA. Safe travels!

This is TOTALLY what I notice this time of year, too! Not just in the barn, but everywhere. It’s so quiet. The birds that are around–plenty of them!–are done with courting and breeding? So no songs. Nothing feels like fall quite like a quiet forest :sob::sob::sob:

Mine are still here but we had some chilly early. mornings and a few were hanging out in my garage! Lat year we had a warm rainfall late August…there were close to 30 swooping all over the lawn front and back…then poof, they left!

I know, it’s kinda sad. I miss them

Our barn is empty, and silent. I miss them too.

Just saw our first scouts of the year today (April 5) Southern Ontario (Niagara Region) :tada:

No barn swallows yet in the Hudson Valley. They are usually here by now.

My scouts showed up last Tuesday! (In CT!)

It felt early with how chilly it’s been but I think right about when they usually arrive.

Goldfinch’s arrived over the weekend and they are usually behind the swallows so late here in southern PA too

I love this thread so much. I think of it every year and then get so excited to watch for the swallows.

None here yet in SW Ontario but I’m sure they’re on their way.

The first one showed up at my barn Monday. In Ontario, about an hour northwest of Toronto!!!

Our first scouts just appeared yesterday in Rhode Island!

Oh wow, maybe it’s just mine that aren’t back yet. Their chicken coop is waiting for them!

None here in Eastern Ontario but it has been quite miserably cold and wet.
I didn’t have very many last year and am hoping for more this year.

They have arrived here in SE PA! Happily chirping and working on those nests! I love them, and they make me so happy to watch swooping and soaring around the farm.
