How tall are your weanlings, and how tall do you expect them to be?

How tall are your weanlings and what age are they? And how tall do you expect them to mature to?

Both my foals are 13HH. One is 4 months and one is 3 months.

The 4 month old is by Sir Gregory and out of a 16.1HH mare

The 3 month old is by Sagnol and out of a 15.3HH mare. This mare seems to be throwing some size as her yearling by Freestyle from last year is 15.1HH at 14 months old.

Cindy, you have a 3m who is 13h already? Good Lord! I hope for your sake they are early-maturing! LOL

Mine was 13 1/2h (as in, 13h 1/2", not 13.2h lol) at 5 months. Based on birth height he should hit between 16.3 and 17h.

Yeah, I am quite surprised since the dam is only 15.3HH and sire 16.2HH. But I guess you just never know. He is also built like a brick you know what, lol, hence he was named “Sumo” when he was born.

Mine was 12 hh at just over 3 months. She seems to be growing slowly so far, cuz she was very tall and solid at birth - based on that i would’ve said 16.2hh+, but with her height now, i think she’s more on track to finish around 16.1hh, like her half-sibling.

I need to stick my 4 m/o, but I have a feeling she’s closer to the 12 hand range than the 13 hand range. Her dam is 15.2 and her sire is 16, but the dam was a maiden mare so I"ll be happy with a stout 15.2 or 15.3.

That is a great name!

Mine were both born 7 hours apart and are 4 1/2 months old now. Filly is a good 13h and I am expecting her to end up a solid 16.1 out of a 16h by a 16.3h. The colt is a monster at 13.3! Both of his parents are 16.3 and he is the first foal out of this mare. I doubt he will be bigger than her though. She grew fast the first 2 years and then slowed to a much more “normal” rate.

YIKES! If you all have WB babies and yours are 12h to 13h at 3 to 5 months of age, I need to remeasure mine. There is no way my Arabian baby is as big as a WB baby. Measured him at 48" at exactly 3 months. Both parents are 15h. He’s taller than his half sister was at this age by 2" and she’s half Hanoverian. Hope he slows down some, I wasn’t looking to breed a big one.

They do grow at different rates though.

My boy (another warmblood) was born prem and tiny, he’s now about 13hh, maybe a little bit more at 6 months old- mare 16.1hh, stallion 16.3hh so I’m hoping he’ll be 16.2hh but we’ll see, doesn’t really matter as I’m 5’3’’ myself, lol!

Wow! Those are some big babies. I don’t really have experience breeding, but 13hh at 3-5 months old seems huge to me.
I bought my boy as a foal and he was 13hh at 10-11 months. Granted he’s only 15.3hh and had a bit of a rough start in life, but I didn’t think he was too late to mature.

This thread has inspired me to go out and measure some of my youngsters today. Will report back…

My 13yo WB gelding was 13.2 at 6 months. 14.3 at 12, and finished a hair under 17h, so 13h at 5 months is pretty on track with that.

I don’t think this size is at all unusual for one who will end up in the 17h range, given that the general rule is to add 2h to the 12 month height

The bloodlines / breed does make some difference to growth rates.

I had two that were both 13.2hh at 6 months. One has grown to 16.2hh - might make 16.3hh yet. The other one is rising 5yo and very much stopped at 16hh. But she is out of a tb mare and has obviously reached her full height much quicker.

My Oxford filly is 13 hh at 3.5 months.

Measured mine this morning

13 hands at 5 months old, out of 16.1 hand maiden Hol by 16.2 (I think, maybe a bit bigger) Cobra One stallion. I’m hoping she will be bigger than mom, but we’ll see.

I just picked up a mare I bred and sold and her 2011 filly to take to the inspection next month for the owner who is very pregnant herself and can’t handle it this year. Anyway, I believe the filly is 4 1/2 months, maybe getting close to 5 months. She appears to be pushing 14H, she is a big girl. The mare is only 15.3, but I just sold her first foal, which I bred, as a 4 year old and he is 16.2 and the vet who did the PPE says he’ll go another inch or two – I knew he was still growing. The sire of this filly is 17H or 17.1. She is truly lovely, I’m very excited about her. I’ll try to get an accurate measurement.

5 month old Cunningham filly is 13 hands out of a 4 yr old 16.2 hand Coconut Grove/Solid Silver mare.

My Redwine colt is 13 hands. He will be 5 months on Sept 22. His mom was 16’3 and had to be put down (bad colic) when he was 6 weeks old. He was her first foal…so guessing 16-17 hands at maturity…

I have not measured yet but don’t put much stock in weaner height…have had the little ones get big later and the big babies grow slowly later. After 12 months is a better indicator most of the time.
