My 3.5 month old filly is 13.1. We’re guessing she’s going to end up somewhere around 16.2.

Is she a WB?
If so, then - “i don’t think so, Tim”. Try more like 17-17.1hh.
My 4.5 month old is 12.3 1/4". Mom is 15.2, dad is 15. I think she’s going to be bigger than I planned…

Oh, that would be terrible … I do NOT want something that big! She’s 1/2 WB, by a 17.3 Hanoverian and out of a 15.1 Appaloosa mare. I’m hoping the dam’s side of things will prevent her from getting too monstrous!
This is the “little” beast:

Ahh, well do Appies generally gain most of their height early on? Like QHs?
If so, then that would explain why she’s so tall now, and perhaps she won’t finish at a monstrous height…
I have not measured yet but don’t put much stock in weaner height…have had the little ones get big later and the big babies grow slowly later. After 12 months is a better indicator most of the time.
measured the weaner filly…dam is 15.1H Appaloosa from foundation stock and sire is 15.3H mostly TB Paint/should finish at 16H. Filly is 12.3 1/2 at 7 mos old. Her legs are already longer than her dams…so she will be “more than 15.1H”.
Lord help me!
My 3.5month colt is close to 13.2+.He was enormous at birth as well! Just for fun I measured his leg from center of knee to coronet…17 3/4 inches…if that holds true, I have a monster:cry: to look forward too! I am only 5’3…oh my! He is by Cabalito…

depends on how “leggy” the horse is too to throw it off. My “leggy” (long cannon) gelding string tested at 16.3H o/o a 15.3H dam and 16.1H sire. He ended up at 16.1H. OTOH a Arab/WB cross I bred with a very short cannon proportionally string tested at 14.3H with the knee/coronet test and 15.3 with the ergot test. The colt ended up at 15.3H.
My 13yo WB gelding was 13.2 at 6 months. 14.3 at 12, and finished a hair under 17h, so 13h at 5 months is pretty on track with that.
I don’t think this size is at all unusual for one who will end up in the 17h range, given that the general rule is to add 2h to the 12 month height
I keep hoping mine grows! He is an Oldenburg will be 3.5 years old next month. He is out of my maiden TB mare (very wide 16.2h) and sire is 16.1. He was born on day 326 and was 39" tall when born.
At 4 months old he was 12.2 hands. At 8 months 13.2, yearling 14.1. He was 15.1 by his second birthday, and 15.3 at 3rd. I have been too chicken to measure as he is so much smaller than I had planned on for a warmblood. But he has a heart of gold and the best personality with a ton of suspension and I wouldn’t trade him for anything. He is super wide though with a ton of bone and big joints. I have a friend with a horse by the same sire and said he was stalled at well until his 4th year at the same size as my boy and is now 16.2 and built like a mack truck…he just kinda creeped up slowly. I’m crossing fingers for 16.2…
Add 2h to his 12 month/yearling height, and that’s about where you can expect him to finish, give or take 1" or so
Well, after reading this thread I had to do it! And since yesterday was my colt’s 3-month birthday, it was time to drop a stick on him!
He is 12.3 3/4 at 3 months. By Sinatra Song out of 15.2 Arab mare.
(My Rosenthal out of a 15h Arab mare was 12.1 at three months, 15h as a long yearling, 15.3 as a late two year old and finished at 16.1 1/4.)
Hoping Surefire (or is his name Safari…or Serengeti ?? lol) will finish in about that range, as well.
camohn…I have a 2008 full brother to this one, while he was big as well, he ended up so far at 16h, he is not as leggy as this colt. This colt is not excessive leggy in correlation to the rest of his body…I hope that you are right though. His dam is 16 hands and sire is 16.3, but dam line runs ALOT of Big Boys…over 17hh. Gues we will have to wait and see…
13.3/14 hands 6 months on the 25th. Valentino Z out of a 16.1 hand TB mare who throws her size or bigger.
My Rubignon filly at exactly 4 months is 12.3 and a half. She is out of a 16.0 1/2 hand Kalypso mare who has foaled six times and five have finished taller than her height, this filly being her sixth.
Just at quick glance; here’s mine:
Wolkentanz II / Matter Of Honor xx / Briartic xx (almost 4 months-old) is 12.1hh. Sire is 16.3hh and dam is almost 16.0hh… Not sure how tall this means she’ll be? Mom does throw small foals at birth, but they catch up afterwards… Half-sister was 14.2hh at her year-old birthday by a 16.1ish stallion…
Apiro / Anhaltiner E / Raise A Chief xx (almost 4.5 months-old) is 12.2hh. Sire is 16.3hh and dam is 16.1 1/2hh. He’s a pork chop, twice the width of the above filly!
I am actually shocked to see that both foals don’t have that big of a difference in height… He is MASSIVE compared to the filly, he seems so much bigger and taller! Yet… not so much!
Any guess on a mature height?
Just remeasured my coming 4 month old Sagnol colt yesterday and he is now pushing 13.2HH!! Dam is only 15.3HH but seems to be throwing size to both of her foals I have had! So I think he is going to be a big’un, lol.
I just measured my weanling, Lyric 55. At 5 months she is just shy of 14 H. Her siblings are all tall, her brother Rule is 17.1 Hard to tell but I think she will go at least 16.3, maybe 17H. The dam is 16.1 but Ironman does tend to throw size.
Nm
Here’s our filly - she was born on 4/25/11 and her dam is 15.3 on her tippy toes. She’s about 13 hands right now but going to be BIG. (so much for the little mare and the little stallion making a ‘little’ foal)
She is a full 2" high behind right now. Her dam’s yearling is by Waldaire (Lynnie’s sire’s sire), so more than a 3/4 sibling and about an inch shorter than their dam. The 2007 gelding that is a full brother to the yearling stands just shy of 17 hands and looks angular and growthy. Both the yearling and this filly are already taller than he was at same age. So I think they’re all going to be well over 17 hands in the end.
o.k., just wormed and measured. The six month old filly is 13.1 hands and the five month old colt is 13.2. The filly was quite ill for about a month so I think is lagging a little. I expect them to end up 16.2-16.3. If I ever get around to it, I have been keeping data on all of my horses, from birth until full grown. I would love to plug it into a spreadsheet and then do a line graph. For some reason, I think it would be very interesting to see if there is a pattern to it!
I haven’t officially measured but I have 2 fillies this year- born 25 minutes apart. One was bigger at birth and slightly bigger all along but now at almost 5 months she has taken off and is probably a full hand taller, plus way more bone!
Genetically, I expected the smaller one to end up bigger…she is by Bugatti Hilltop (16.3 hands) out of a 16.1 WB mare, while the other is by Ideal (16.2) out of another 16.1 WB mare. Interestingly, both fillies have almost identical levels of “blood” at 64%
I’ll let you know what happens in 4 years LOL!
