How tall are your weanlings, and how tall do you expect them to be?

Scratch that. I can’t “glance” to save my life apparently!

My filly is closer to 12.2hh, dam is a HAIR under 16.0hh.

My colt though is 13.1hh. Pork chop leads in the height and weight department!

So, who wants to guess mature heights now?

My colt born on 7/26/11 is 13.1 hds tall as measured today. Mom is a 17hd Percheron and dad is a 16.3hd Saddlebred, so I’m thinking 16.2" to 17hds.

My 6 month old colt by Apiro out of a Tb mare is 14.1H!! He’s gonna be a BIG boy

In general, will a 3 and a half years old Thoroughbred grow any taller?

My almost-six-month-old Dutch filly is already over 14hh. She’s so big I decided to do the string test and got 17", but I suspect she may end up taller than 17hh. I think I’ll start calling her Georgia the Giant.

depends on the bloodlines and his build. Most likely will get another 1 to 2 inches…but if he has a more QH build of stocky and looks like he is filling out wider already then maybe not.

It really depends on the feed and program you Thoroughbred is on.

A lot of our track rescues at 3/4 tend to either grow a little or have a good growth spurt after some solid feeding and rest.

My 2011 is approximately 13.1-13.2 at 6 months by Just The Best out of a 16hh Rio Grande mare.

My filly Lyric 55 [Ironman] who was born April 15th, is 14.2+ could be 14.3. I am quite sure she will go close to 17H. Her full brother Iron Rule is 17.1 H.

Our Appy sport horse was 14 hands at 4 months, he is now 16.2 and 1,100 pounds at 18 months. We are guessing he will be 17.2 or taller.

My Jones Hall colt (bay) is 13H at 5-1/2 months.

My purebred Arabian colt (flaxen chestnut) is 12.3-1/2H at almost 6 months.

I expect both to mature at 15.2H. Maybe 15.3H for the Anglo colt (Jones Hall).

I have kept records of foal heights since 1994, and found no correlation between the foal-6 month size and adulthood.

This makes me feel SO much better, allanglos - cuz my May 2011 filly decided to pretty much stop growing around 4 months and at 6+ months is a shrimp… dunno what’s going on, she was on track to be fairly tall (16.1hh-16.2hh) and then she just… stalled out!!

But you’re not the first to say there’s no point in putting stock into 6-month old heights. I will wait and see how tall she is as a yearling.

No, it’s not a given. I have a solid palomino Appaloosa mare who was an enormous foal/weanling but she is only 15.3 as an adult, having only matured to her sires height and not her mother’s 16.3. Her half brother (same mare, different stallion) though, same thing, huge baby and I understand he is pushing 17.3 and his sire was only 16 hds. I have a draft cross gelding - both parents are very tall - 16.3 and 17hds, he was 15.3 at 2 and at 3.5 he’s just 16hds. It will be interesting to see what kind of height he adds at this point. I think he will go 16.2 but you never know.

^ I’m also glad to hear that. The same filly I posted about earlier in this thread is 14.1 at exactly 6 m/o… I’m not overly interested in having a 17+ hand mare in a few years. My fingers are still crossed that she maxes out around 16.2.

Well my 9 month old colt just got measured and he is a whopping 15 hands high! His breeder said he would reach at least 16.2 hands, however now we are thinking there might be a possibility of him hitting 17.0 hands! He is 1/2 Lusitano, 1/4 Friesian and 1/4 warmblood and lovely super light palomino, he almost looks like a creamy white. His father was a cremello and my boy looks just like him! Without the pink skin and blue eyes though :stuck_out_tongue:
