How to look slim and trim in riding breeches.

More surface area to absorb the movement. Or so I have heard. From that friend of mine.

You see, I’d rather eat yummy food than attempt to look like a 20 year old when I am 30+ years post that. Why on earth do we wear white breeches? Seems to me that black would be far more flattering (and horsey dirt resistant). But of course no one asked me!

Buy a bigger horse ?

I have the wunderbreech and honestly it’s nothing special. Think enough to hide a few lumps and certainly works to reduce the see-through nature of some white breeches, it really the wunderbreech is nothing more than a pair of capri length leggings

A vest also helps - it smooths the bulge…

You could get one of those skinny mirrors.

Big belly and and even bigger thighs and booty. I’d like to think my body says, "I enjoy working out almost as much as I enjoy cheese. " I lift heavy but my inner fat kid get hungry after a good iron pump sesh. I love the Kerrits full seat cross over breeches. Durable good fabric hides lumps and works for my body type. BTW beer and nachos sound amazing right now.

I think I will lose weight when I retire. I tend to eat less on weekends. My job is stressful and I eat a fair amount at work. Most of it is reasonably healthy though there are some things that could be cut back.
On a work day I usually eat the following

coffee with milk and sugar (not very much sugar)
oatmeal with berries mixed in
cheese and crackers (1 oz of cheese)- six whole wheat saltine crackers
2 hard boiled eggs
100 cal of cottage cheese
celery sticks
1 oz almonds
A salad (spring mix + chopped kale) with balsamic vinegar and olive oil for dressing
Soup (Progresso doctored up with lots of veggies + chia seeds)
an apple (sometimes don’t eat it and the horses get it)
10 gummy bears.
1/2 cup guacamole
fruit (raspberries, strawberries, kiwi or whatever), grapes
Sometimes I eat a “real” dinner after work sometimes not
I usually have more cheese and crackers, a few slices of ham, and olives for dinner
And usually a glass of wine (or two)

So No this is not a low calorie food plan. But I just love to eat!!!

I find enormous differences between how I look in different cuts of trousers jeans breeches. Anything that is too tight at the waist will give you muffin top. Find the brand and model that looks the best on you and buy it in the right size. You may not look petite  but you will look.smoother and less bulgy. I find riding tights and very thin stretchy breeches aren’t as flattering as thicket material, too.

This^ or Lipo…

Its a good question as breeches are the least forgiving garment ever invented. My ‘stable’ of breeches is limited, for someone who is a horsewear online addict. I have five pairs; I especially like the European breeches (Pikeur, Cavallo, and B-Vertigo) but if I had to restrict myself to just one brand for the rest of my life, it would be Pikeur Latina Grips. Taupe.

Also, I have no waist, fairly wide hips, a short torso and long legs, so look like a sausage in any breeches without a wide waistband and angled pocket/s, and jeans style cut.

Visually you want to just break up any obvious expanse of fabric, with either cut, colour contrast, or both. So worst for big hips is a high thin waistline, and no front pockets. Contrast is always good, get the full seat suede or grip section darker than rest of breeches. Jeans -style always excellent, pulls in you visually, as does a wide waistband with two studs, rather than one at the waist, and just touching on your natural waist, like the Horze Grand Prixs, a great cut.

Low pockets on the back reduce bums, as does a ‘v’ in the small of the back, as you get with the Miss Blinks HKM. I also like my breeches to err on side of too big, so fabric moves a bit across the legs and bum and you can get your seat bones in and down. Right mix of poly, cotton and elastane is important [everyone has their favorite, personally I don’t like too much cotton] My B-Vertigo Melissas feel like silk.

Every breech-designing country has a different cut and sizing system - just to make life easy. English and American brands are a bit more conservative, the Italians are innovative and fashion forward, and totally belie the effect of Mama’s pasta since designers assume you have a bum like a nine year old boy. Germans, Finns and Swedes do a nice balance between the two (Pikeur, Cavallo, Horze, B-Vertigo, Kingsland). ddx

I LOOOOVE the look of the old flared breeches! Wore them for as long as I could find them in thrift stores! Hides a multitude of anatomical shortcomings.

Also agree with doctordarling – high and wide waistbands are wonderful. NO muffin top with a high waist!

Last night I had nachos and beer. Oh it was so good! With guacamole on top. I did a lot of farm chores yesterday. Loading and wheeling several containers of poop up the drive way (it’s a bit of a hill). It won’t make up for the nachos of course but probably better than nothing!

Thanks DoctorDarling. We have a somewhat- similar build. I am very short waisted (about two fingers between top of hip bone and rib cage so high rise looks AWFUL on me. My hips aren’t that big but my thighs are muscular and then with a layer of fat on top even though it’s not a really thick layer of fat- well as you said breeches are the least forgiving garment ever made (second actually after a bikini). At least I have long legs which help me to stick on the pony better should she have too much thoroughbred enthusiasm. I also agree your comments on what makes a person appear more slim.

OK, ya’ll I am hitting the gym again tonight 45 minutes on the treadmill and probably 30 minutes of weights. It might make me even with the beer and nachos. Or not…

Have you seen the new compression breeches? Actually, I think only the tights are called compression, but I have a few pairs of breeches with firm stretchiness. They will create a muffin top, though, so not so great without a coat.

Where can I get the magical compression breeches? Well I didn’t make it to the gym the other night but I did today. Increased weights or reps on some of my weight lifting. I’m getting ready for ski season. Other than a down hill suit, ski clothes are much more forgiving than riding breeches.

This is a GS Giant Slalom suit actually but they are pretty close to a Downhill suit.

But I don’t race anymore so I’m safe!!!

Maybe I could get some discount liposuction in Tijuana! I hear they use tequila for anesthesia.

My favorite breaches are Piker brand, I think the model is Murano (or something similar named). It is a mid-rise, and not cut for a stick figured teenage girl with no hips or butt. The fabric of the Piker breeches is a more tailor like fabric which I think is much more flattering than tights style breeches. I also show is cream colored breeches. Not much better than white, but at least I don’t feel like the stay-puff marshmallow (wo)man. However, I have also shown in white breeches with a grey seat and I do think they help visually thin. Lastly, in the summer when coats are waived I wear a vest. I just think it looks better. If I’m really dying with heat in the summer with waived jackets and I don’t want to wear the vest I wear a solid colored dark navy show shirt. Helps break up the whole light colored/ white clothing Michelin man syndrome.

Another vote for the FITS Performax.

Another rider at our barn once told me that she liked to watch my lessons because her hips were tight and she could easily see how my hips moved so she had a visual to apply to her own riding. My response was that my hips are hard to miss…
