How to Look Up Your TB Tattoo for Free (Thanks to the Jockey Club)
I don’t think the Jockey Club has anything to do with PP’s, does it? I don’t see how they could give away something that doesn’t belong to them.
Equineline is a wholly owned subsidiary of the JC.

Ok I didn’t know they had PP’s. I have only used DRF or Equibase or BrisNET. Maybe that is part of the problem. If they gave away PPs it would put those other companies out of business.

Equibase is also owned by the JC.
Having that info freely available can only help racing, esp the betting side, which is how racing is financed.
It seems odd that you can look up detailed results, and analysis of each race, for horses around the globe, for free with a few mouse clicks, but a horse at a track down the street costs you money.
The same goes for progeny stats, entries etc.

Maybe this is a dumb question, but is this going to be of any help to those who can’t read the tattoo or the youngsters without tattoos? Will they do a photo search, etc?
I have two I’m trying to identify, a 2yr old and a 4yr old, both tattoo-less
With no tattoo at all then unless you thought you knew who these horses were (maybe you were told a name by whoever you got them from but weren’t sure if that name was right, or were told the sire AND dam by the previous owner), so they could specifically look at photos and markings of the horses you thought they were, then there is no way they could ever help you.

DNA has been on file for foals since 2001. So they’ll be able to run DNA tests on yours.

The JC has been EXTREMELY helpful in IDing older horses without tattoos. For those there are blood typing samples on files but they are old and it get’s a little dicey.

North American Thoroughbred Society has been working with Registrar Rick Bailey, he’s been great with these horses, try him first. Really easy to ID your horses!

He may need photos (to match description on file) and a current DNA sample from you. This is not the same as requesting duplicate Foal Registration papers, it’s an easier process.

Wow, this is awesome. I was just about to send in my horse’s partial tattoo and pics to the Racing Protective Bureau, now I can save my $60!

not true. We had a lot (lot, like a unit) of horses donated to a rescue, and the horse they thought it was (gave JC sire and dam) wasn’t a match to either DNA or physical description. JC was able to find a match in their database. Turns out it was another gelding brought over in the same lot.

To clarify this story: the breeder brought these horses to the rescue, and donated them based on the understanding papers would not be released with the horses. This was not, and I repeat not, an uncaring owner who let their horses go to killer sales.

Sm, I’d love to know how to get in contact with him. Every time I talk to JC customer service they give me the same answer “we can’t help without a tattoo”. I’ve offered up to send photos, dna, money, anything they want to find out who my girl is. I don’t care for her papers because I’m not breeding or racing, but I’d like to know who her parents are, who bred her and how the heck she ended up in the hellhole she was in when I got her.
P.s. I have a lot of info to go on, age, lots of distinct markings, state bred/foaled blah blah blah. I just need someone with a database access to narrow it down to match a description and picture and confirm it with dna. That’s it! Easier said than done I guess :frowning:

Just ask for him at the JC, 1-800-444-8521.
Better yet I’ll PM you his email address too.

Failing that, I can even get it started for you, but there’s no reason you can’t… he’s a great guy.

Called that number and got tranfered to some Andrew person, not much help either…just said that same thing everyone else had.

I had no idea there was a DNA typing test/Proof of breed… what exactly will it come back saying? Other than Thoroughbred type, will it link to similar DNAs in the database and come up with a possible family line? Or am i completely misunderstanding and jumping way ahead of technology??

I can honestly say that words cannot express how happy I am about this. I could have saved a horse with this if we’d had it two weeks ago…the next one, now I know I will be able to intercept at the auction. This ROCKS.

I’ve already submitted a request for my guy but I’m impatient!

It’s telling me I don’t have authorized access. Would somebody be willing to plug my guy’s tattoo in?

It’s X20016, he’s a Chestnut gelding, 1994 model. Thanks!

I am having a heck of a time starting an account.

I gave them my information and listed myself as an owner. However, my name is not on his papers and maybe that is what caused the problem. I just never transferred them because I am not racing him or breeding him since he’s a gelding.

They then e-mailed me saying that I needed to basically prove my connection to a Thoroughbred or interest in the breed. Well, I wouldn’t have signed up if I didn’t have interest in the breed.

So I sent that information back to the e-mail address they provided and it wouldn’t go through.

So now I am stumped and really don’t know why it was a hassle. Kind of disappointing actually.

TF, choose “other” in that area. Just know you will need to link a credit card to the account because you can purchase reports with it as well. The tattoo lookup is basically a “service”, like everything else in the reports part of equineline, but it just happens to be free. You do get a couple of monthly free goodies with the account though, such as a couple past performances or progeny look ups from time to time so it’s nice to have for that as well. You can also transfer your boy into your name officially with the JC through the site once your account is established, so that might also be worth something to you.

I had the same problem. Tried to sign up, got a message back saying that my name doesn’t show up as an owner or breeder so I can’t get in. I’m thinking a lot of people who rescue and retrain are NOT going to show up in that capacity…

I will see if I can sign up again and select other since the e-mails I send don’t go anywhere.

I am interested in their other services as well. Even those that come with a fee. I used to know a guy who had TB race horses and was very involved with the JC but we lost touch so this will be helpful to me.

I haven’t decided if I should transfer him to me or not. I mean, I have his bill of sale and his vet bills etc have been in my name for the past two years. But I might.

His papers do help ID him I suppose.

We also had that problem when we tried to sign up–and we had horses racing at the time. So I think it’s some sort of computer glitch maybe, and not JC policy. Why don’t you try calling them? They’re usually very helpful on the phone or in person.
