How to Look Up Your TB Tattoo for Free (Thanks to the Jockey Club)

I was so thrilled when I saw this news. What a great thing for horses and for their owners! I’m hoping the AQHA does the same with their tattooed racers too. The standardbreds have for a while now:

If anyone with instant access can look up: D16521
I’d be extremely grateful. I sent a “slow” request because I was denied signing up for instant access. But I’m afraid I’m a terribly impatient person! I may have my # wrong anyway. It was just my first guess.

It’s for an approx 9, chestnut, gelding. No white on feet. Stripe on face.

We also had that problem when we tried to sign up–and we had horses racing at the time. So I think it’s some sort of computer glitch maybe, and not JC policy. Why don’t you try calling them? They’re usually very helpful on the phone or in person.[/QUOTE]

I am in the same situation (have the papers for unraced gelding, wasn’t planning to change the ownership) and a nice lady called me from Kentucky to say my name wasn’t in the database as a owner, asked what was going on and then authorized my registration. It could be a computer glitch, they may be simply overwhelmed at the moment or maybe they did not realize how many people would be interested in signing up for the service.

In the meantime if you aren’t able to access the Jockey Club at this time and just want a simple tattoo lookup, just post it here and I’m sure those of us with access will look it up for you.

I noticed in the results that were posted there was no sire listed?

You can get around that by going to Brisnet and getting a free 5 cross pedigree with race results.

Word by Word is by Gone West:

Or from the jockey club site on the far right:

I like Brisnet just a tad better because they include race results. Not race by race, mind you, but you can tell if your OTTB is a non-winner of a ham sandwich or one that did pretty well on the track.

‘non-winner of a ham sandwich’
raises hand

Thank you for the lookup on Word by Word.

Is there any place to lookup photos or descriptions of markings of possible matches online (either paid or free)?

You’re welcome!

If you’re asking about an online database of pictures of specific horses with the markings of the horse listed, no. If you’re asking about a general description of head, leg, and other markings with photos of what they look like on a horse so you can better describe your horse when making an ID request, then yes.

Oh, I see. That’s what I was hoping for. I was hoping to compare a photo or more detailed description of “Word by Word” to my horse. There are a lot of chestnut geldings out there! I wonder if I call the JC?

If you call JC customer service and give them the tattoo number they can pull up the registration papers and photos. Ask them if you can describe the horses markings and they will compare for you from the picture.

They did it for me a year ago when I was describing my filly and trying to match her to her papers.

Good luck!

thats my horses tatto. It’s on his upper lip.
He’s a bay gelding.
any info would help.

Not enough characters, unless he’s a Standardbred. For a Thoroughbred, there should be a letter and 5 numbers.
Photos of the tattoo would help, as well as photos of any face or leg markings on the horse (or the front of his face showing any whorls if he doesn’t have markings) and his approximate age if you know.

And to piggy back on what furlong shared, 5 is an unusual first number (second digit) unless the horse is fairly old. The yearly foal crop just hasn’t been that large in recent years.

Pics of the horse (showing the markings and the face whorls clearly) and tattoo are needed here.
