Hi! I have a young OTTB that is in need of a hunter/EQ show name! To help ill give some background info. He is a dark bay(but looks black most of the time) with one small white sock on his right hind.He also has a upside down arrow on his head like the avatar from the last airbender(lol:lol:). He has never raced but trained and had a suspensory injury that he’s fully recovered from now. His name is Big Boy since he’s 16.2 HH and still growing. His track name was Mr Three K. His parents names were No name needed and Shakin it up. This horse is such a saint for his age, keeps breaking barriers against all odds and is super sweet. I’d like to keep his show name one word/or short as possible for simplicity but also classy. TIA for all the help!
Avatar
It’s one word, it works with his marking, and it’s also a word people know even if they don’t make the Last Airbender connection
Confidence
Outkast (since his barn name is Big Boy :lol::lol: )
I always suggest that you choose something that is meaningful to you. Something from a song, poem, place, artist, or painting that is special to you. Or the name of the street you grew up on, or your best friend’s childhood dog’s name. Something you’d be happy saying 100 times a day that invokes a warm feeling.
His Jockey Club name is cute, and will help his breeder keep track of him.
Shaken not Stirred
Or just Martini, to keep the one word theme
How about just Airbender?
To honour his breed and his family, you keep his registered TB name, and use that as a show name. To do this marks you proudly as a person who truly appreciates TBs in the show ring, and it identifies his family as a great source of jumping talent for future TB purchasers, which helps other TBs for sale off the track.
Which is more important to you? A “swanky new hunter name for your horse”, or helping and promoting the TB breed as competitive show prospects?
HIs jockey club name makes me think of KKK.
If I had an OTTB I probably wouldn’t change the show name unless I really didn’t like it. Didn’t really think about it at first but Midge does make a good point. If you want to keep it similar, maybe Mr. Three Grand would be better… though I’m not the biggest fan of that name haha.
If you’re really set on a new show name, I like names related to astronomy or islands. Names related to astronomy or star signs could be pretty common in my opinion but they could easily be made into one- or two-word names. For example, Aquarius, Pisces, Orion, something about comets, etc.
A friend of a friend’s horse at a different barn is named Shikoku. I love that name and I’m not sure why.
Maybe “Not Shakin’ Me Up” for a combo of his dam and sire’s names.
Hope you’re able to find a nice name for him!
Aang, the protagonist from Avatar. Or you could have show name be the last airbender if you like that. Loved that show as a kid! If I had a horse with an arrow on his head like that I’d definitely run with that theme lol
Meeeh, I think you’re kind of overstating the power of the name and how much anyone actually pays attention to that kind of stuff. Especially if you’re not someone who gets to show a ton. If it’s your horse it’s reasonable to want to name it something you like.
I usually keep the Tb names the same mostly because I’m lazy and hate coming up with names but I’ve had some ottbs with truly awful names, ranging from hideous to very inappropriate lol.
I use my OTTB’s Jockey Club name but it is a nice name, “A True Angel.” I like the idea of keeping the Jockey Club name but I can also see picking a different one.
How about “Otter Bee”
OTTer Bee - eree= OTTB.
Haw Haw.
Both Otter’s and Bee’s are cute.
Unless the Bee stings you of course.
The end.
Racer X
Yeah, I had the same reaction. I wouldn’t show him as Mr KKK. People really won’t like that.
Formal Attire
Wow. That’s a stretch. The Jockey Club takes naming very seriously. If there’s any way someone could misconstrue a name, it won’t be allowed.
People ? What people ? I assumed his name represented 3k, as in three thousand, or he was named after someone with three k’s in their name/monogram.
From the Jockey Club Naming Rules:
“F. The following classes of names are not eligible for use:
10. Names that are suggestive or have a vulgar or obscene meaning; names considered in poor taste; or names that may be offensive to religious, political or ethnic groups;”
Also, “An explanation must accompany “coined” or “made-up” names that have no apparent meaning.”
His name was approved by the JC. Those people were ok with it.
