Hunter Stallion to Refine a Huge Rio Grande Mare

Have a very large (17’2), very wide bodied Rio Grande mare out of a Graf Goetz mare. Bred to be a hunter and if she were sound she’d likely be a good one. Great brain (her dam has a wonderful brain), very good jumper (has the Rio jump), very athletic. Decent mover with a fabulous canter. Pretty but too big, too wide. Thinking about breeding but will want to size her down, refine. Her faults are mostly her size. She did not inherit her dam’s lovely large eyes and dished face. She’s pretty but would want to know that I might get a better head. She’s bay, star and snip, two white hind socks.

Her dam was bred to be a dressage horse but had a wonderful career as a AA show hunter. She did not really need to be improved upon.

Rosenthal? He makes very, very pretty kids and would certainly pretty up her head. Look at DownYonder’s recent thread of Premium Foals - Rosenthal is on top of one of the lists

Fresh or frozen?

A welsh pony!

I bred my 15.3 hand tb mare to a sec A. Welsh and the foal is the prettiest darn thing on the planet.

If I could breed horses that beautiful, I would have a following! Ha ha

Seriously though, wasn’t it Sue Sisco that was breeding some warmbloods to welsh ponies?

If your mare is that large, it might just work!!! Maybe some pony experts would chime in.

No. Mare is too large.

Virginia Bred: too big to make a smaller horse? Too much of a size difference?

I bred my mare to a welsh that is barely 11 hands. Looks like pony will be a medium size large. He is a yearling now and just about a medium.

So if she bred to a 13 hand welsh she wouldn’t get a smaller horse? Probably too easy or everyone would do it.

Balta’Czar could be an interesting choice

If you can use frozen, you might consider one of my Thoroughbred stallions. I bred Huntsman alot to Percheron and Percheron crosses with great success. Most folks thought they were warmbloods and one did FEI level dressage. Murray also bred a them a couple of times and both refined them alot. These stallions have good jumping lines and their foals jump well with good form, success in hunters, eventing and some jumper classes. You would certainly get a refined version! Good luck!

Probably fresh.

I would talk to Sandra Laprise about her stallion Sir Wanabi. The foals/youngsters I’ve seen are elegant in the extreme. Ships fresh from Canada. And he has enough jump not to take that away from your mare.

Fielding.

Oops, just saw post about fresh!

Is this the same mare that you asked about before, or another one?
Did you end up breeding her?

Is this the same mare that you requested stallion suggestions for before?
How did that go?

What about Pablo or Con Capilot?

OP, are you looking for a horse foal as the result?

I have seen that he is for sale. Will Sandra continue to stand him while he’s for sale?

I hadn’t heard that, but she’s still shipping as of 2 weeks ago. It’s the middle of the breeding season and he has contracts. Sandra is not the type to leave breeders swinging in the wind.

I got hurt last year and decided not to breed this season, due to my injury. I am not thrilled about breeding but this horse needs a job and she’s not one I will sell or lend out.

You are looking to get a horse foal? How about Chaleon? http://www.crookedwillowfarms.com/horseDetail.do?keyName=Chaleon

Or, Cabalito? http://www.whitehedgefarm.com/cabalito.html

I know what you mean about a Rio Grand - he is one big boy, big all over.
