How does the scam work, in this case? There’s no “shipper” to send extra money for.

I just sent him a “more serious” email from my real email address (the one he sent it to). Let’s see if I get a reply.

Well, I just received this email today from a hunter/jumper barn that I thought I would share with you guys:
Hey. I thought that this was a scam but didnt think about searching it
online until now. Needless to say “Carl Owen” sent me a Cashier’s Check
drawn on Washington Mutual for $8700 and it was postmarked from Italy
with a return Italian address. I was a little surprised to recieve the
check because I told him a rediculous amount of money and I thought
they would just disappear. I took the check to my bank to see if it was
fraudulent and they said I had to contact Washington Mutual to verify it
and there arent any in my area so I had to send a copy to their
verification department. So I did that today and I sent “Carl Owen” an email
saying I got his check and was looking forward to meeting his son. I
got a reply email from “Carl Owen” and it said that his wife sent his
son’s travel cost to me and I needed to wire the remainder by western
union to two different travel agents in Spain. Then I knew it was a scam
and I sent a reply stating that I sent the check to WAMU for verification
and I would not be able to send anything anywhere till they gave me
the funds for it. About an hour later I got a call from “Carl Owen”…
strangely he sounded nothing like a Italian or an Belgium!!! He tried
to convince me that his son needed to leave tomarrow to come here and he
needed me to wire money ASAP. I told him I wasnt until I could get
confirmation from the bank the check was drawn on. He quickly hung up!!! I
think its pretty funny and if you know the FBI has a ongoing
investigation on this scam please let me know. I would like to forward them the
check I recieved and the emails. I am just glad that I was smart enough
to figure it was a scam then to deposit the check! Crazy people in
this world!!

What is hilarious is that he didn’t have a clue that everything you wrote back to him was BS. That is the funniest damn thing!!
Good Lord, sending extra money for the kid’s shipping expenses is even more daft than sending it for the horse’s.
He never responded to my email, this came from someone else that tracked me down by googling “carl owen” or something like that and she saw my posts on this topic.
Wow. I was so hoping the kid would come and you’d have to actually start the school, Ms. Bodacious Tat Ta!

Well, the Geek in me knows that because of volume to mass ratio, since these guys have an exoskeleton, they simply can’t handle hugeness. Which is nice for those of you living in Florida, that your cockroaches cannot attain the size of 2 or 3 feet in length.
But I was sitting at my computer, with Safari open to PubMed and Netscape to COTH, when suddenly there was this big thwock to my face…almost as if someone’s tatongas slapped me in the cheeks…
