I’ve explained above what the purpose is and no not for “funzies” . But hey just walk on by wringing your hands and hope it’s not a crime in progress .
And We all know what they say about opinions.
Can you not read?
The point is to
A) verify what’s going on
B) if not a legitimate federal law enforcement activity then it’s a crime in progress that needs to be investigated.
But maybe you just want to walk on by and look the other way. I hope no one I care about is ever getting grabbed in the street with some of you around. You won’t call the cops.
Lets talk about reading comprehension. There is no time to verify what’s going on before someone gets dragged away and it’s too late FOR THEM. Maybe a novel concept for being concerned about someone that may or may not be a US citizen. Whatever happened to innocent until proven guilty and due process? Oh, that’s only for white people (if you’re lucky) because that is out the window at this point. That has been stated by many different people, in many different ways, and corroborated by countless different news outlets.
I don’t think ANYone who is advocating here would NOT call 911 if they witnessed a crime like this happening in front of their noses, I sure know I would. However, you don’t need to see this in real life to know it’s happening and be very concerned.
You keep pointing to 911 like it’s the answer to everything, while also saying it won’t stop anything. That’s 100% a red herring. But sure, let’s all pretend that’s helpful.
Have you ever had to call the government at any level (state, fed, local) for anything? It literally often takes days to get through to the correct agency/ person. Are you thinking the “ICE” agent is just going to chill until then?
I kind of think this is the opposite of what would be helpful. There are jobs here that need filling. Let’s make it easier (and legitimate) to hire workers here. My niece worked at a boarding facility for a few years. She would get a new hire in to train, and by lunchtime, they left and never came back.
This is my barn owner’s experience, and it is an easy barn to work in. Owner provides snacks and cold water. Insists workers take lunch breaks. Dumping manure is a short walk to a large ramp directly into a trailer. At another barn I boarded at, the manure had to be wheel-barrowed way back to a far corner of the property–I think maybe in another zip code.
If this has been answered, ignore this. The IRS will issue a tax id, which looks just like a SS#, to immigrants. In that way, employers can withhold taxes and the immigrant gets a w2. The taxes for a nonresident alien are extremely high. They do not get exemptions and deductions.
And this is one reason the IRS keeps its records separately. To protect the privacy of.these individuals who work and contribute to our society.
The ITIN can not provide work authorization or prove authorization on an I-9. The SSA (not the IRS) does track who is paying into SS using fraudulent or stolen SSN’s though. The IRS is never going to turn down a payment.
I’ve seen SSA documents that estimate the number of unauthorized workers (included over-stayed visas and illegals) using fraudulent or stolen SSN’s before, and it wasn’t a small number.
No, the tax number does not provide work authorization. I’m not sure your point? The IRS and the SSA are separate agencies. An ITIN is not a stolen SS#. The ITIN ensures taxes are paid. It’s a deal the IRS made with immigrants. It has nothing to do with SS#'s.
About 5% of the US working population is undocumented by most estimates.
There is an old saying: if you owe the bank $1M dollars you have a problem. If you owe them $100M the bank has a problem. 5% of the working population puts this squarely in the second camp.
They don’t just poof off the sidewalk. It takes a little time to do the rounding up and putting in cars etc.
that said, even if they’re gone phone calls can still be made to verify who was there and what they did and again, if it’s found not legit, an investigation will begin. Might save a life,
Or like some are saying just throw up your hands and keep on about your business.
Personally when they were in my area last week it was obvious who they were and what was going on so it wasn’t an issue. The ICE agents had ICE on their backs, others had Border Patrol.
They announced a few days ahead of time they would be in the area and actually had local and state law enforcement with them. I saw them in two different places.
I dont think I said they would, or that I expected them to. They will do their thing, and the police will call and check into it. They can get info much faster than the average joe.
It is physically done and paperwork signed. As a commissioned military officer, I swore many soldiers and civilians in with this oath. (Using “affirmed” and dropping the “So help me God” if the person preferred. A very small minority chose this option).
Unless an officer resigns their commission, they are still officers until death and can be recalled to active duty at any time. Because of this, I was still able to swear the oath after my military retirement when I then worked as a DOD civilian. Again, because I was working as the installation AG, I swore in both civilians and military.
And it was always an honor to read that oath for them to repeat.
ETA: And an American flag was always present, although never a Bible.
Yes, with officers it’s a once and done (for the military career). For civilians with no break in service, it’s just when they enter the civil service for the first time. Enlisted military members, on the other hand, must take the oath again each time they reenlist.
I think it’s possible that if the state detained a random group of 84 people (not necessarily immigrants) in any city, there might well be a few (two or more people) who have had some criminal convictions.
I do understand that having a criminal conviction makes an immigrant eligible for deportation, but my sense is that ICE was not specifically aware that those two people were working at Delta Downs and targeted the mission to apprehend them. Rather, after the raid, they discovered that two people who had been detained had been previously convicted of criminal conduct. Cue the triumphalism.
