I think, unfortunately, we are just at the beginning of these raids occurring at race tracks and other horse facilities. And I feel pretty concerned by the position of those who seem to suggest that mass civil rights violations are no big deal when the government is fishing around for supposed criminals. I suspect, or at least hope, they would feel differently if they were subjected to some of the racial profiling, excessive force, and deprivations of liberty that many American citizens have already experienced in the quest of immigration enforcement where officers have been instructed to ignore legal guardrails and arrest as many people as possible. And, to be clear, this type of workplace raid is not geared to get âcriminals off the streetsâ and in fact has likely decreased public safety, as a significant number of federal agents from different agencies-- like the FBI-- have been tasked to civil immigration enforcement instead of investigating and preventing violent crimes. The most recent ICE detention data shows an unprecedented increase in interior arrests of individuals with no criminal record, because that is really the only they can reach the insane arrest quotas Stephen Miller is mandating.
We are experiencing a time where the government is mass-undocumenting people-- yes, including people who âdid it the right wayâ and paid the fees, filed the applications, followed the process the government laid out for them to come to the US. Hundreds of thousands of people who followed the established process to enter the country and received work permits had their status and work authorization terminated overnight. And now, even if they have other pending immigration applications, they are being arrested at worksites or on the streets. Many of our industries, including the horse industry, are reliant on immigrant workers who will be feeling the pain of these aggressive enforcement tactics. That is the economic reality of America, and our immigration laws are decades behind the current needs of the country.
