I own a very lovely 4 yr old andalusian mare. She isn’t registered, due to an issue I have with the breeder. Long story. If I bred this mare it would be for myself anyway. So, please no flames!!! Here is a photo of her. I have looked and looked at “baroque” sires but I can’t seem to find one with the movement I like. So many of them have extravagant knee action but no movement through the body, at least IMHO. This mare has very big movement, more typical of a WB, though she does paddle a bit. She has an absolutely wonderful temperament. She is currently 15.2hh. My trainer suggested looking at warmblood sires for her. I would be breeding for dressage, and I won’t probably breed her until she’s been under saddle for awhile. We are starting her this spring. She is 3 yrs in this picture. (the photo labeled “Myca”) So, just for fun, any suggestions?
What about a nice Dutch stallion?
There is a breeder in Saskatchewan who owns and successfully competes a lovely Andalusian stallion named Lepanto. She has produced some absolutely super offspring by crossing him with some good quality Dutch mares. Perhaps you could contact her and see what she would suggest. The crosses really are very nice!
I would definitely look at the warmbloods to cross with her. Because of my years in Spain on Andalusians, I have always believed an Andalusian/warmblood would make the ‘ideal’ dressage horse. I intended to do this when I was breeding the big warmbloods, just never got it done.

I agree that WB and Andalusian crosses are fabulous. I ride with Paul Belasik and Andrea Velas at the Pennsylvania Riding Academy where they stand an Andalusian stallion (trained and show through GP), Excelso. I’ve seen both his full Andalusian offspring and his crosses, as they breed both, and I am really, really impressed with the get! The crosses tend to be more sporty and a bit bigger (every single WB cross gelding he has ever produced has been 17+ hands), and I love, love, love their movement, confirmation, and work ethics! They are such solid citizens right from the beginning. His full Andalusian offspring a amazing as well (so just for fun you should take a look at him…). I’m sure you could reach out to Paul or Andrea if you wanted to chat about Excelso or just get their feedback! They are fabulous!
I also have a 2008 Oldenburg filly whos granddam (on her dams side) was an Oldenburg-approved Andalusian mare, who herself had shown through GP, and she had three offspring that showed through GP. And you can definately see some Andalusian in my mare. I think they have great temparments and great heart. All in all… I’m a big fan of the Andalusian/WB crosses!!!
Will Oldenburg US approve an andalusian mare? Without papers? Or would her baby only be approved? (which would be fine with me) I looked and KWPN will approve a non papered mare’s offspring but only “B” status. Whatever that means!
I assume you’ve ruled out breeding her to an Andalusian? Though I can’t understand why you’d rule that out. You’d have a purebred foal who could be registered as a half-Andalusian.

Thanks Nin, but as I said before, I have not seen an andalusian stallion whose movement I’ve liked. I’m starting to think that a nice WB sire crossed with her would make the perfect dressage horse! I LOVE the Idocus son Olivier for her but he is quite tall!!

I’ll try to answer your question, but I know there are some people on COTH that are much more suited to answer… but I’ll give it a whirl!
In my mares case, her grand-dam was accepted into the Pre-Mare Book II (aka Pre-studbook II). These are “mares that exhibit the type of a German riding horse but that do not meet the criteria for a higher division can be entered into Pre-Mare Book II.” According to the other books, the “criteria” includes their parents that are in a book already. So my mares grand-dam, as an Andalusian, demonstrated the characteristics they were looking for, although she had no Oldenburg approved parents (sire, dam-sire, etc).
So because my mare’s grand-dam was in the Pre-mare book II, my mare’s dam was eligible for the Pre-Mare Book I (pre-studbook I). My mare, therefore, is in the Mare Book, and her offspring will be eligible for the Main Mare Book.
So although some might argue my mare’s grand-dam wasn’t breed and born Oldenburg GOV, I see it as, she was sooo nice, that even without approved parents she was still invited into the registry! So, if I am not mistaken, this could be the same case with your mare!!! 
She could be accepted into their registry!
Your mare would also be eligible to be presented to other registries. For example, she would be eligible for the Oldenburg NA/ISR - Pre-Mare Book (ISR only) - and her, therefore, also eligible for at least that book.
Again, I am only giving you info based on my understanding due to my situation with my mare. I hope it helps!!!

I second taking a look at Excelso. I also ride with Paul and Andrea and have ridden Excel. He does move through is body and isn’t overly extravagant in the front. He has good capacity for extensions and passes on a talent for changes and collection. He is a 1-tempi and passage machine.
His offspring (WB crosses and full Andalusians alike have amazing temperaments and movement. I covet so many of them lol!

Have you looked at Costalero XV or Electrizar? They are Cartujano line Andalusians. As a person mentioned above, the foal could be registered half Andalusian if you bred to one.
Here is another interesting Andalusian (PRE) stallion - Klickitat - he’s a younger stallion, but very promising. I saw him ridden in a clinic a few years back and was surprised, it isn’t often we see a PRE with his movement.

Breeding to a PRE, you could register the foal with IALHA as a half Andalusian (or if you find a Lusitano stallion). What about trying to get the mare registered with IALHA? Is that worth pursuing, so you can register the foal as a purebred?

She looks like a lovely mare. She also looks like a great candidate to cross with an Arabian stallion. A couple to look at would be Magic Aulrab, Bremervale Andronicus & Bonne Vivant. The foal can be registered Half Arabian and then can show at the Arabian shows. Also, if you choose a SHN Payback stallion your foal will be eligible to win money at Nationals.
