If you or a friend has a retired horse at Byrd’s Retirement in VA…

as a piece of courtroom evidence, the photo, particularly the second goes a long way to proving that Poofy was not just some old, useless horse.

I hope this young man grows up to know and appreciate all animals. I suspect he will

and now I am tearing up again

Poofy is one handsome boy! Love the 2nd pic with your son giving him a pat.

Just reread the thread and looked at the pics of where he was 4 months ago. Wow!

Yes- we have a rule whenever he rides when he gets off he has to say “thank you horses” and it’s kind of his catch phrase, even when he wants to go feed carrots he says that to all of them. That’s what he was saying here :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:

I did find it interesting he was so worried about Poofy’s “boo boos” and asking about them. Not sure if he was thinking of my other one who does have a boo boo or if he remembered all our worries about poofy specifically, but watching how gentle they both were with each other was sweet. Poof knew he had a job to do and Camp (my son) knew that horse had a boo boo that needed kisses.

Poofy is a VERY good lead line pony.

@Railbird, I have to ask - did many folks at the show know Poofy’s history?

A few did, and then as we walked around I saw a lot of kind of whispering and nudging so I think word spread rather rapidly.

Unfortunately the trial will not proceed this week. My understanding is that due to the quantity of witnesses, the commonwealth attorney requested a third day and the judge did not grant it, and he felt he could not do the horses justice in 2 days since he expects the evidence on each individual horse to take about an hour. I was alerted that the witness list is public record, so I will share here. There are some interesting names, to be sure.

When has the trial been moved to?

And is the Joe Davis subpoeaned the vet or a different Joe Davis?

I believe he is the vet, since some of the horses who were removed are now seen by his practice.

I don’t know when it is being moved to, but not any time soon. Probably in the fall, if I had to guess?

Darn allergies. My eyes keep watering.

It was so well done! Of course someone in the comments on the chronicle IG asking if anyone knows that keeping an arthritic horse thin is kinder to them. Uh…

You can’t fix stupid!

Clearly that person can not see the difference between thin and skeletal with no muscle anymore either.

Same as the argument about seasonal condition. Keeping an arthritic horse on the thin side means a body condition score of 5, MAYBE 4.5.

Not 1.5 or 2.

Not develop a heart murmur from starvation or have a gut full of dirt and rocks.

Really a well written article , thank you COTH

“If you’ve ever seen a foundered horse, you have a bit more of an open mind”

The internet’s ability to assume by default that someone is a complete idiot is just breathtaking. Don’t get me wrong, lots of those exist, but it seems like a stretch to look at poof and think “I bet this person just doesn’t know that sometimes horses shouldn’t be fat”

That is such a sweet story. Horses do forgive and love again. Much more often than people do.

Ignore the idiots …. Poofy looks divine. And your son on board that second chance horse is priceless.
Job well done.

Was Poofy always his barn name? Do you know how he got it?

@Railbird,

Can you provide an update? Why didn’t the prosecution proceed?

Are there any consequences for Byrd?
