So fun seeing your herd take shape… Now that the hierarchy has been established
& To me, they’re babies until the squirreltails are gone

Here are a few photos of Roslyn and guardian llama Bunny having a little chat.
I had to bring in all the sheep yesterday evening because a big rain was expected *and came!..around 2am. Our shearer comes tomorrow and wet sheep are a no-no. Soooooo…mares and foals don’t have the barn interior today. They only have shed roof to stay under during today’s expected additional rain. (two 12x24s…so enough…plus they have The Cave, someday i’ll give you guys a ‘barn tour’) So Roslyn and Hazel were quite curious about the folks that were in THEIR barn. Bunny, one of the sheep guardians, loves the foals…
Those ears on the sheep guardian !!! Skweeeeee!
Looks like Roslyn got on the line twice when they handed out necks.
Do the llamas get clipped too?
That is so sweet.
i wish she had an elegant neck, but i think it’s the angle and her posture. Though Quigley, (her papa) has a nice long neck…so i’m hopeful. Do all foals have thick throatlatches??
And yes, llamas get clipped too
The sheep moved out and the mares and foals moved in! Sheep will get to take over the mares and foals’ original pasture after they get sheared. This was their entry for the first time…and after this particular video they took off on an exploration gallop, Brenna charging ahead. And i videoed my thumb lol. When they galloped DOWN a wet hillside my heart skipped a beat. But Brenna thought the babies were up to it and she guessed right. I did not allow them on this pasture until I thought they were old enough to handle the terrain. There are a lot of hazards. (muddy pond, outrageous bolders and a very rugged hill)
In the morning i feed the mares about 40 pounds of alfalfa. The foals share and most of it gets eaten. The mares and foals have 24/7 in and out privileges. Barn has big fans and they hang out there for most of the day as there are no flies in the bigfan wind. Hazel and Roslyn crave attention. from me. And would MUCH rather have scritches and me saying their name than gnawing on carrots. Roslyn does enjoy gnawing (with her little incisors) and can actually bite off bits. Hazel …well, i bite off a bit at a time and feed that little baby boy.
All the wormy things you might see on the ground in these vids are pecan tree blooms. Gonna be a LOT of pecans this year. Our oldest pecan tree is Grandma Pecan and she shades this corral.

regarding very old trees, when we first moved to where we are now there were many life oaks that were huge “said to be centuries old” which I thought was realistic …until I found aerial photos of this area from the 1950s that showed the whole area as open ranchland with gravel roads (that are now paved), few if any trees existed, the photos also showed the pond that the house next door was built over.
your place looks amazing
oh thanks.
Oaks …though slow growing, get huge faster than one would think! When my mom and dad built our new house, they planted an oak tree in the middle of the front yard and the middle of the back yard. Now, 65 years later, the things are gigantic towering monoliths.
That second old photo shows that gnarly old catalpa tree in it’s infancy. It’s the same tree…150 years ago. So i actually have the luxury of knowing how old that particular tree is. I need to get up in it and tear out a virginia creeper vine that keeps crawling up through the interior of the hollow trunk. Not sure how long this tree will be here, she’s beginning to fail
Rizada won’t stand and nurse FOREVER any longer. and so Roslyn has to work at it!

I had been wondering what happened with Quigley’s baby mamas and their foals.
Just found this thread and all your wonderful photos. So glad everything went well!
Lol! Lyra has been starting to do this to Max as well! Unfortunately when he gets frustrated he gets a little rude with his teeth which leads to a bite on the butt. Fortunately mom is now disciplining him, the first few days she didn’t and I was worried he’d be a complete terror with no boundaries.
How tall is Rizada? Cause Roslyn looks like she’s gaining on her!
Not sure Rizada’s height. Guessing 14.2-15.0-ish
Thanks for the updates
Seeing the quartet herd is so soothing to watch.
And your farm…
You’ve got my vote for Most BeeYooTfull Place on this Earth.
