Importing costs...

What are the broken down costs to import a horse from different parts of Europe and Canada? What’s the difference between a mare, gelding, or stallion(to be gelded)? What are the costs for the different trailering companies (per mile?) equinexpress etc. and who do you like or not like? Feel free to add in anything else I’m forgetting about ???

UPDATE: What about Canada to southern us? I’m in Texas and am wondering the cost difference between Canada and Europe because I’ve seen some stock I really like in Canada. Does anyone have costs for equine express etc? Or other companies that’ll just haul for you

I know there are other threads about this but the ones I found are years old so I wanted some updated prices

These prices will vary depending on where in the US you are shipping to and where the horse would be coming from. Mares cost more than geldings if they are over 2 years old due to the additional tests and quarantines.

Based on my experience looking earlier this year a mare would cost approx 10k USD to import to NY from Belgium, Germany, or the NL not factoring in transport once in the US. You can reach out to companies though and generally the brokers that assist with this can offer advice.

Good luck!

No quarantine from Canada, small fee at the border, so you really are only looking at shipping cost to import from Canada, and that is dependent on mileage and time of year (ie, if you can catch a slot on one of the loads in the mass exodus to Florida before the winter and are roughly on their way!).

Based on friends’ experience, approximately $7-8k to import a gelding from Germany to the east coast, through NY (including quarantine and shipping to a location right off a main interstate).

It’s quite expensive to import a stallion (over 731 days old) because they have to go through at least 30 days of CEM quarantine once they land here. (Mares have to undergo CEM quarantine also, assuming they are over 731 days old, it takes only about 2 weeks for mares if I recall correctly.)

If you’re thinking of importing a stallion and then gelding, consider gelding the horse abroad and then importing, you’ll save a boat load of money. (I have figures somewhere, as someone I work for is importing a stallion…it’s not an inexpensive venture.)

Generally speaking, from Europe you’ll have to pay:

Vet fees in Europe
Ground transport to airport
flight
3-day quarantine in US
ground transport to your location

If it’s a mare or stallion, add CEM quarantine after 3-day quarantine.

All in transport from Holland/Germany (i.e. relatively near to Schipol) to NY (i.e. relatively near to 3-day quarantine), seems to run between $8 and $10k for a gelding. Mares are more like $13k. I’ve never dealt with a stallion, so I can’t speak to that - but I understand it to be thousands more than a mare.

With a mare or stallion you’re going to pay a lot more in quarantine and testing. If it’s a stallion with the intention of gelding, you’re better off having them gelded in their home country, then shipping once they’ve recovered. Having been there with a mare once already, it’s pretty tough on them, although if you want you can PM me and I know a really good quarantine near Schipol who has recently built special surface turnout paddocks for their QT horses (I think it’s better for them than sitting in a stall for 30+ days, my mare was a mess when I finally got her)

This is what I did (bought a stallion but had him gelded before import). With the difference in QT times it was a no-brainer. The flight from Germany and 3 days QT in NY only cost around $3k, and I picked him up from NY myself, but this was back in 2000 so definitely not current data, sorry!

Gelding or mare <2: $9000 doorstep to doorstep Germany to Seattle. $5000 Europe side (transport to airport + flight), $3000 quarantine, and $1000 to haul from LAX to Seattle. I imported 2 in March 2016. Getting ready to import 2 more. I reached out to Klatte and Dutta and they were both quick to get me estimates. Same story with the quarantine facility, Jetpets, at LAX. This time one of mine will be a mare older than 2, and that means 2 add’l weeks of quarantine. My guess is that it will add another $3k to the cost.

 Best way to keep a kid out of trouble, no?

I imported a mare last year. From Denmark to Amsterdam, QT in NY, then additional QT in Ohio, and finally shipping to Chicago, I paid about $11 - $12k.

And she was worth every penny.

That’s a HECK of a GOOD deal. $3 grand total cost? Even back in 2000. I’ve been arranging shipping for TBs for my clients for over 30 years. Not any in the last 10 or so. Was a flight groom on a couple. Couldn’t get it near that cheap even when we hired the the whole plane for a “dedicated” horse flight of 38.

Maybe they just stick it to TB owners?

Maybe a last minute booking. The shipper had paid for the “palette” and had 1 left over space. Better some money than no money. When I was shipping the palettes were sold in groups of 3. Same price for 1 horse or 3.

Where in TX are you? And where in Canada are you looking? Obviously these two factors will cause prices to vary quite a bit.

I purchased a horse from Ontario in May, and shipped him to Houston. I had to pay for the health certificate for border crossing (~$120ish I think?), and then I believe my total cost for shipping was $1750. I ended up using two different shippers - someone local to Ontario who brought him to a layove facility in Lexington, and then a larger hauler picked him up there and brought him the second leg.

Honestly, getting the horse out of Canada was the hardest part, since many of the larger US companies either didn’t want to drive up that way or were going to contract that leg out anyway. Once they’re in Lexington, there are so many trucks going in and out that it was a piece of cake. The local hauler I used was recommended to me by the seller, but I can PM you her name if you end up going with something in Ontario.

Hope this helps.

When I imported from Ireland it was about $7500 and that included everything from picking up at Irish stable - transport to Dublin - on to Holland, then to NY and quarantine. International shipper secured transportation from NY to MD for me as well which tacked on I think $400-600 can’t remember but my timing was good as I got a good rate due to shipper going down empty to pick horses coming back from FL.

Last I heard it was still around $8K to ship from Ireland to US/NY - it can very due to exchange rates.

Geldings are definitely less of a headache to import due to time in quarantine - unless of course you are importing for a breeding program.

I just imported a gelding from Holland. $4600 from Holland to LAX; about $2000 2 day quarantine and then hauling to Oregon (about $1000). He flew KLM and we used Apollo for quarantine and shipping.

You can count from 8-13K depending on where and if its a gelding mare, etc.

Somewhat tangential, but are these roughly the same expenses when shipping competition horses internationally?

I see the most recent posts are two years old. I have been told about 9-10 k to ship a gelding now from Ireland to NY . Does anyone know does that include the quarantine in Newburg, NY? Are there added costs from the Newberg, NY quarantine facility? If so, anyone know prices? Thank-you.
