Candy canes on the way!
Okay sorry for being out of the loop, but there are 21 pages!
I only knew this horse briefly, but did he end up somewhere happy? PM me if he needs anything! He’s a love.

But Dux should have been a lifer too. Glad he appeared here, glad someone told me about it, and glad he’s home, for good.
(at my first reading, I was a bit insulted by - definitely not a horse that would end up on a thread like this - feeling like there was an insinuation that the grey November Rain was more deserving of his retirement, than my Dux. If I am misinterpreting your post, then I apologize, but that was my first thought/reaction. I am glad that this gentleman Gary is the kind of person who would keep his old champion for life, kudos to Gary for that.)[/QUOTE]
Oh please DO NOT take offense to this, I NEVER meant that. I think all horses deserve a great retirement. I have three that I hope to keep for life. I just meant that I know the person who owns this horse and she wouldn’t sell him, that’s all I meant. Not in any way saying another horse wouldn’t deserve it just as much. As for Gary, he is a great guy, however he sold this horse in his prime. He was doing the Regulars and the A/Os when the sale took place, it’s really the person he sold it to. She just recently lost her - I want to say - 29 yr old mare this past year. I was saying that he wouldn’t end up here because of his owner, not because of his past career. That’s what I meant. I am so pleased that you have this horse now. I think they are all worthy of that and I can understand it is a financial burder, but I also think when we take them on, we take on that responsibility too. Trust me, my three right now are a 17 yr old mostly retired (he teaches my neices and I ride him occasionally but he’s not the show horse he was) and a 2 and 3 yr old so I know the costs but I love it and it’s my choice and I will work hard every day to ensure the life I want them to live. I can’t decide for anyone else but I do think you are great for taking on this horse, like I said, they all deserve respect and good treatment - Olympic level, famous hunter or just family friend!

Since you knew him, care to share what you remember?
I’m sure we’d all love to hear about how he was as a young 'un!
As to where he ended up, he’s with one of the very few people I would trust with my very own beloved horse… so yeah somewhere happy for sure.
O.K. Who Taught Dux Tricks?
This is a horse of many talents…
- Leaps tall objects in a single bound
- Consumes candy canes at the speed of light
- Opens latches with the flick of his nose
- Trains people to come when called (Angela alerted me to this fact)
And tonight, I walk over to the barn and there he is with his lead rope dangling between his teeth, he untied it from the gate and was waiting for me to bring him in, bobbing his head up and down like “HELL-OOOOOOOOO, OVER HERE, BRING ME IN, BRUSH ME, I NEED MY TREATS AND OH YEAH DINNER MIGHT BE NICE TOO”.
OMG he’s precious.
Ditto!

Well $1 Store does not have Root Beer Barrels, but they had those starmints, he’ll have to deal for a little while longer 'til we locate the good stuff!
I also almost bought him these hard cinnamon candies… they might be too ‘hot’ but then sometimes RB barrels can be too…?
Probably a really bad idea…

There is another rescue story about a horse who was shown in the olympics and was shown by leslie howard another year, and ended up at a sale in canada.

I just read this thread and I can’t believe the same story twice in the same month… wow… these horses are very lucky. I don’t believe in animal communicators, but even I would try to find out what happened in both cases…
Lucky horses!! and again an Australian horse!!! strange!
Whew! But it was 21 pages of WORTHWHILE reading though
Tazer… amazing and I am speechless. You are indeed a hero.
So many emotions in this thread, it’s just an incredible story. Somewhere through the pages there are some lessons learned, about each other, about our equine industry, about how truly incredible these animal are.
Thank you.
So glad to hear the old guy is doing so well!!
just read the link to the canadian message board where another olympic level horse ended up being rescued from an auction. how sad.
what is with the australian horses being bought by the US and ending up in auctions/dealers barns after competing at such places as WEF…

Could simply be that, thanks to their branding, they are recognize-able and trace-able whereas other horses with these same backgrounds who end up in the same circumstances are less so? Think about your average WB who may have a brand but nothing else that distinguishes anything beyond his/her breed/registration.
Does anyone know why the USEF online records only go back to 2004? How do you go back further? Do you have to call or write them to request the information?

Combined with this and all the stolen horse threads lately, I start to wonder if brands aren’t more useful. Sure US Tbs have lip tattoos, but how many people look under the lips.
Pure speculation on my part, but I think the records only go back to 2004 because that was during the whole change over from AHSA-USAEquestrian- USEF. I’m not sure how you might get AHSA or USAEquestrian records.
We also have one that was on an olympic team (argentina) that we ended up getting quite reasonable for what he is. I have a child that shows him, but he certainly has the talent and soundness to still be doing the upper levels…makes you wonder. I also recently had a horse come in for sale, was foxhunting and was now for sale. We started riding him and the first halt we did he squared up and dropped his head and I was thinking “HUH!” so I started playing around with him. Now i’m no dressage rider but he did half passes, piaffes and a great passage etc with ease…this horse was cheap! you never know…

Wow, that is so cool to find a past olympian! (although terrible they can get dropped like that, too). It’s crazy what can be picked up cheaply in this economy and to some extent, all the time, if you have a good enough eye I suppose. Crazy but also sad. I actually pulled a 4 y/o WB out of a backyard (really skinny, untouched, and uncared for) this last fall that is working out for me beautifully right now. People are amazed when I tell them her story. How did you figure out your horse’s past? presumably if it was known you wouldn’t be able to find them so cheaply … I wouldn’t think, anyway.
It pays to be a packrat!
I am right now watching the '98 WEG Showjumping from Rome.
Found the tape I made of it [off Animal Planet] in ‘98 as I was packing today.
The course is 5’7" max height fences with a 7’ spread Oxer.
What are the chances November Rain will be on it?
Would that be too much or what?
