Indestructible dog toys?

My nine month old puppy has suddenly begun completely destroying her toys within 20 minutes of when I hand them to her. The squeakers inside the toys are the first targets, and are removed with the precision of a surgeon. Next comes the stuffing, if the toy has any. So far she hasn’t swallowed anything, but that’s a huge concern.

The only toy she has that she has not been able to destroy is her basic kong, but she prefers the softer toys (with the squeakers inside, naturally). Nylabones are out; she chews them to the point that their sharp edges could do double duty as a prison shiv.

Anybody out there with similar experiences - what do you recommend? And why is she suddenly doing this? Up until a few weeks ago, her toys lasted for months.

It is a tragic situation in my house.

My youngest shepherd loves his soft toys. He will gently gnaw on them, but otherwise takes very good care of them. He grew up with a little dragon plush that he had for almost two years, carefully guarded.

His grumpy older sister, the cattle dog, doesn’t even really like toys. But MAN does she love to destroy his plush ones!

The best solution has been the Kong squeaky balls. They are pretty tough, and have enough “give” to them that the young dog likes to chew on them, while the other knows there is no stuffing so leaves them alone. Doesn’t hurt that the young dog loves fetch, too.

Kong makes a nylon stick. I’m not going to say that it was particularly durable, there was a hole in it the first day, but even half-unstuffed it continues to be a huge hit, even with Miss I’m-Too-Good-for-Toys.

Kong also makes dragons: http://www.chewy.com/dog/kong-shakers-dragon-dog-toy-largex/dp/105543?utm_source=google-product&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=hg&utm_content=KONG&utm_term=&gclid=CNvO6aGii8QCFUUQ7AodXBcA3g (there is an even bigger one that’s purple) that my youngest likes and the other hasn’t managed to fully destroy yet. She rips the ears and head off, the soft parts, but the nylon of the rest of it seems to stop her while still giving the young one something to carry around.

“March30” gives you 30% off a Petco order of $100, if you want to splurge. That’s basically what I have to do…every few months I place a big order of new squeaky balls (since he brings them outside and they are gone forever), plushy toys that I can carefully watch, and a few new toys to try.

All new toys are killed within a couple of minutes. Squeaker and stuffing all over the floor. Then the carcasses are ripped apart playing tug of war. I have tried the expensive toys but gave up and just buy lots of cheap stuff.

The only thing that seems to last are Roll Over stuffed hooves.

My dogs are 10 months and 8yrs old.

My tough on toys crew hasn’t done too much damage to the Kyjen Invincibles snake that I got them a while ago. It doesn’t have much stuffing to rip out, and as advertised, the squeakers. don’t. die. Even under assault from my squeaker obsessed Cattle Dog X Hound guy - he LOVES to squeak a squeaker, and normally, they only last for a few seconds once he’s figured out where they’re located within a toy. The snake is still going strong after at least a year, which is great for him, but ugh - the noise! When he has the snake, it never ends, so I don’t know - it’s a good toy, but I’m not sure it was a wise purchase…

That said, you can do what I did with my beloved Big Black Hairy Dog when he was a destructive young thing, many years ago. Just don’t buy the soft toys - he got Kongs and Nylas and that was about it for a year or so - I waited him out, and then bought a very inexpensive fleece bunny, and gave it to him with the caveat that if he destroyed it, it was the very last soft toy I’d ever buy him. He still had that bunny (though the squeaker gave out) when I lost him last year at age 15.

Unfortunately, no such thing. I finally just got a collie for my shepherd!

Thanks all for the replies! I was at a pet store the other day that had some rubber type toys that came with a guarantee, but they were really expensive so I didn’t jump into buying one. I don’t remember the brands or I’d ask if anyone has any experience with them.

I think I have one of these snakes - I bought it last week and it’s still intact, but I thought that’s because she hasn’t spent much time on it yet. Maybe I need to take away the other stuffed toys that are still left and see what happens to that one?

I’ve been thinking that is the next logical step. It cracks me up that she is so harsh and destructive with her toys, because she has NEVER taken anything that is not hers. She’s the first puppy I’ve ever had who has not destroyed at least ONE shoe - we have a few spots in the house where we leave various pairs of shoes for our convenience and she just doesn’t glance at them.

Oh don’t tempt me - I am so NOT getting another dog!

This is the only thing my dog has not been able to get to the bottom of. http://www.petsmart.com/supplies-training/toys/starmark-everlasting-wheel-treat-dispenser-dog-toy-zid36-10490/cat-36-catid-100118?var_id=36-10490&_t=pfm%3Drecently_viewed It comes with a “long lasting chew” that was gone in 20 minutes. I have 3 of them only because 2 disappeared and it was worth it to me to shell out another $27 to replace them. Found them in the corn field in the fall! Fox liked them too. Another thing it takes him a while to get through are these http://www.petsmart.com/supplies-training/toys/kong-squeezz-ring-squeaker-dog-toy-color-varies--zid36-9896/cat-36-catid-100118?var_id=36-9896&_t=pfm%3Dsearch The ONLY Kong that lasted more than a day. He is a chewing, gnawing machine. Has trimmed all of my trees and bushes.

I have also had good experiences with kong toys, but my dog isn’t particularly hard on his stuff.

I have several of these things and they’ve been pretty indestructible:

They don’t squeak, though.

We have the giraffe-horse, the giraffe-giraffe and the tiger-kitty. Zin’s kind of shredded the ears on the giraffe-giraffe and I don’t think the giraffe-horse has a tail anymore, but they’re still going strong.

My dog had every toy he had ever received, in perfect working order, until he was 3 and we got an older bitch. Now every toy is “de-squeaked” within minutes. My poor boy…he loves toys.

Stuffing free toys usually hold up fairly well in our house, even though there is a squeaker:

This type of Kong toy might work (my dogs hate it, but maybe yours won’t):

I can’t find an example but we also have a bumper toy that is heavy ripstop cordura or some other material. Totally indestructible by my dogs, anyway.

I had an aussie/border collie that could rip open, gut, and turn inside out toys in 5 minutes flat. She wasn’t always thrilled with chew toys so I tried to find cheap alternatives to the toys in Petsmart, etc. The most durable ones I’ve found actually come from PetEdge (http://www.petedge.com). They have some of the cheapest priced toys there, and they have been the most durable in my household.

I like the tuffy toys too.

We have the mouse which is 3.5 years old http://www.tuffietoys.com/product/T-BY-Mouse-G

We also have a whale but he’s a different whale than the one of their website. The whale is about 2 years old now?

Indestructible? you’re funny. The tuffys last oh, five minutes here. Kongs have had huge chunks taken out of them.

We just don’t let the dogs HAVE toys unless we are actively playing with the dog via the toy or supervising dogs playing with each other. The toys are kept in a box when they aren’t being played with. Even so, we go through quite a few toys.

We don’t believe in “chew toys”; things are either FOOD or they are TOYS, and if it’s not 100% digestible it’s not for chewing on.

Our dog was able to destroy her black Kong toys!!!

What I’ve been doing with her is making toys out of old polo wraps. I take three and braid them together and then tie knots. Even though she can chew through the knots, all it does is create 2 toys where there was 1 to start. Cheap and easy solution to our ‘aggressive’ chewer!

I go with cheapy plush toys and supervised use, or just raw bones mainly to have out. The other toy I’ll have out is the Galileo bone, I think it’s nylabone but it’s rounder than the others and seems to last so much longer than the stick like ones. I had one for almost 4 years of foster dogs coming and going before it started to look sharp and ouchy.

I also get strips of felt, much like the Polo wrap suggestion, and braid/knot them together. The weimaraner loffs lying under the fluttery felt tassels, but then he’s a strange one.

I have one made out of old fire hose that is supposed to be indestructible. I’m quite sure it is entirely destructible, but the destroyer of cheap plushie toys hasn’t destroyed it yet (and he likes it).

fire hose toy

Zombie Corgi prefers brainz

My Rottie loves the Wobble Wag Giggle ball. It bothered me at first that it was a hard ball but she is still able to pick it up n carry it around and she loves the wierd noises it makes. At first she was wary, but now she plays with it alot

Haha - that fire hose toy was last week’s acquisition - I had such high hopes for it but she tore it open within 10 minutes.

I’ll look into some of the others suggested here.

Have you tried toys by West paw design? Those and kong toys seem to be the only ones my 2 year old goldendoodle doesnt destroy. I like that they have a guarantee on them too - if its destroyed it will be replaced.

I will third this suggestion.
My dog who actively chews with his back teeth to destroy his turtle version of this toy ha yet to get any of the appendages all the way off. They are great toys!
