Ingrown toenail keeps oozing blood

Last Saturday, I had to go the doctor’s for an infected ingrown toenail after my horse riding lesson. The doctor told me to go to the podiatrist, but my mom won’t take me. My toe keeps on oozing blood, but my mom keeps on saying it’s fine. I do therapeutic horse riding and do karate; I can’t have a toe that keeps oozing blood. I have to use stirrups when I ride, and it is painful to put my foot in the stirrup. Please help!

Soak it in hot salt water two or three times a day. Sorry for your trouble. Those suckers hurt!t

I think the infection spread to the bone because it’s hurts really bad.

If you think the infection has spread to the bone and your mother is actually ignoring that, than you need to speak with your school nurse on Monday.

Do you have a fever? Yes? It’s probably infected.

Is it oozing pus? Yes? It’s probably infected.

Is it really red around the toe? Yes? Might be infected.

No to the above? Probably not.

I can sympathize with you. YES ingrown toenails are extremely painful. My usual home remedy is soak in warm water w/Epsom salts several times a day. Then I smother w/neosporin & wrap it up using SEVERAL folded layers of tissue secured with tape. You can’t use too many tissues in process of wrapping. That toe hurts & ALL ingrowns are predestined to get bumped several times a day. My Doctor will prescribe antibiotics & makes threats of lancing or cutting the skin away if it doesn’t look better, but so far the latter parts not happened.

I second having the school nurse look at it–that is, if you still have a school nurse. Hopefully she/he hasn’t been cut due to budget constraints…

I don’t go to school. I am a disabled adult who is almost 30 years old.

Do you have a case worker or an aid? Perhaps that person can help.

If the doc told you to go to a pod, you need to go! Infections can spread & get nasty, fast. Please reach out to someone who will help you get to the care you need.

Maybe you can call back the doc that referred you & explain. she/he could be an ally. Good luck

Is this Tiffany?

If you are disabled, you must have a DR, aide or case worker…Let them know. Or have a friend take you to the nearest urgent care walk in clinic…

Thank you for saying what others are probably thinking

Go to the podiatrist. If your mother won’t take you, find another adult in your life who will. Or take a taxi if you have money for that and the doctor. (I’m assuming you are fairly mobile since you can do karate.)

A regular ingrown toenail can be painful. If it’s additionally infected or has a fungus, it may very well continue to hurt or get worse for a long time until treated. I know because I’ve been there. Both of my big toenails have been permanently removed, one about 15 years ago and the other last year. (Temporary removal alleviated the pain until they grew back, still not straight. I ride, run, etc so dealing with painful feet was not an option.) The second one was quite infected, took two courses of antibiotics to treat, and took a long time to heal after the removal surgery. But I’m much happier without them. I just can’t wear open toed shoes because my feet aren’t pretty

Fucidin Leo is the antibiotic ointment of choice for infected ingrown toenail issues but in the short term, soak in hot water with salt added as has been mentioned before

Good luck

Go see a podiatrist. Now. They’ll take care of it and make you feel so much better. I have had two infected ingrown toenails, both on my right big toe. First time around it was gross, with a pocket of pus and everything - got it numbed and dug out. Thankfully I didn’t need an antibiotic but another few days and probably. Doc said to leave it alone and see if the nail will go straight.

Second time I went much earlier (mostly because it hurt so bad I couldn’t get a boot on and ride, let alone walk) and the doctor just removed the whole side of the nail and cauterized it. No trouble since!

**Point to long rambling story is this - just go OP! It’s worth it. **

I used to have horrible ingrown toenails… Epsom salt soaks in hot water.
Next cut a “V” shape into the nail (this is so that the sides will start growing inward to fill the V).
Next, the part that will be the worst, but makes the biggest difference. Clean cotton balls. You’re going to have to pull them apart into tiny bits of cotton. Your goal here is to put them under and on the sides of the ingrown part of the nail. This helps push the skin away from the nail, which is just slicing it up. This step will hurt and be very uncomfortable until the skin can actually start to heal. It’s VERY IMPORTANT to make sure that these cotton pieces get changed often. Every time you soak with Epsom salts, they should get changed. Any time they look bloody/puss filled/moist they get changed. Keeping the wounds clean and dry will help them heal faster.

I had awful awful ingrowns, and with this method I was able to fix them myself without seeing a doctor. This WILL take a bit of time. And they will be tender for a while.

Though if you have the option, just see a doctor.

That was my thought the instant the OP last replied.

If you check the OP’s previous posts, she lives on the other side of the country (CA). She also writes/spells/expresses herself much better than even the very best of Tiff’s posts.

I agree, looking at her past post I don’t believe she is Tiffany.

The location doesn’t match up, yes, but on other forums Tiff’s spelling and grammar is MUCH better than it was on here…
