Looking for recommendations for insurance agents/underwriters who will insure horses valued under 10k for major medical. They are not eventers. Cannot use the Hartford. My current agent does not have any other underwriters that insure low value horses.
I have my guy insured through Markel for less than $10k. Maybe give them a try?
My EMO won’t do major medical for values under $10K…good luck!
If your concern is colic coverage look into ColicCare from Smartpak. Otherwise consider self insurance and deposit a regular amount to build up a reserve for clinic bills.
I made a post over in Horse Care a few days ago on a similar topic. I decided I wanted to nix mortality coverage but my insurance company (Hartford, thru Broadstone) doesn’t do major medical without mortality.
The suggestion on my thread was ASPCA Equine insurance. I did some research and decided to go forward with it. It’s cheaper and the coverage is similar to my previous plan (minus mortality)
ASPCA Equine Insurance.
Bought my pony on Craigslist with no bill of sale. Insured him for $10k of major medical upon purchase through ASPCA. 14 months later needed colic surgery, said yes do it. Within 5 days I had $10k in my bank account. Very easy to work with.
Interesting – hadn’t heard of this. I just checked their website and for equine insurance it shows as “unavailable in your area” … Central Florida. So obviously not available everywhere.
I want to thank everyone for the ASPCA recommendation. I was able to cover all three of mine (3, 16, and 20 years old) for around $75/month. Well worth it.
My mare is insured with ASPCA, and is currently at the clinic so I will unfortunately be making a claim soon. I will update with my experience, hoping it’s a positive one!!
Fingers crossed that all will be well with her.
