Interesting Color

This horse is such a bright bay and has a silver tail. I looked at the pedigree, no greys. I just have not seen many bays that are that bright!

Yup…![]('ve got one…she basically has a chestnut body with black mane and tail.

The color saturation of the picture is off - I don’t think he’s that bright in real life.

The tail is a Gulastra Plume

I wonder if it’s this guy? I can’t see the face markings enough here to see for sure, but really, how many GP trackies with 4 white feet can there be?

I agree this picture is darker, but still not as dark as the one you posted JB, same horse, of course I saw this picture after I posted!

Here’s another one with a Gulastra Plume.

I have seen bays that color before…just like a bright orange with black points. Very attractive color but I still love a dark bay myself! I’m thrilled that one of my babies last year looks to be shedding out that nice dark rich mahogany bay. I don’t get many bays!

Fox-I think that one is going grey though, the dam is grey and the coat color makes me think it is greying. Some greys are so pretty while they grey.

We have this youngster. He has the prettiest tail! Black sire, bay dam, no chestnut or gray.

Given he’s still a youngster, he may still have his baby flaxen that disappears as he matures. that’s my bet on this one

I have a couple with weird white or striped tails. I think this mare, Lodi, has rabiciano/sabino as well as roan doing this:

Her sabino colt JD (RE Jim Dandy) has a similar tail. It has stayed quite light as he’s grown. I’m not sure if he’s a true roan or a sabino roan yet. I’m leaning towards a combo of both.

This is RE Shenandoah. She is what we call a blue sabino. She’s a smokey black with sabino and a lot of ticking in her coat. She’s not a true roan.

Lodi defintely has a heavy skunk tail (rabicano)

I think JD is Dominant White - very Puchilingui-like  I think he’s also Splash and possibly also Sabino

I also think the same about Shenandoah - DW with Splash, and I’m quite sure Sabino also. I LOVE her!

Yes, I agree with most of your analysis. I’m not sure about DW if it’s been identified in our breed yet but I’m quite sure you are right on the sabino/splash as well as the rabiciano for Lodi.

JD is being held back as a possible stallion. He has lovely conformation and exceptional movement…his color is just icing on the cake. His older full brother is headed to S. Dakota to stand at stud there at Windcross Conservancy in a bloodline sharing program and I think JD will be as stunning. Big brother is a plain bay roan. Roans are very common in our breed.

Shenandoah would be an adorable large pony sport horse or hunter. I’m thinking of taking her to DAD this year in our IBC class which might help market her. She is quite lovely. Her full sister, RE Speak Easy, got a very respectable score last year and was second.

That’s awesome about his brother!!!

I think you could indeed take her to DAD - the exposure in that setting would be absolutely fantastic!

There are now 12 DW tests available. I wonder if UCD would have any interesting in testing your guys as a service? Maybe with some rodding from Sponenberg? It would certainly be $$$$ for you to run all 12 tests :frowning:

Here’s one for sale

I posted this on Hunter/Jumper forum, but wanted to show him to others, so posted him over here too… I saw this guy on Canter Pa and fell in love with him and wanted to share… His tail is AWESOME… I know he is a cribber, but I think I would be willing to take a chance on him anyway.

Isn’t that the silver gene coming through?

This guy is a cute chunky monkey and this guy is stunning! WOW!!!

TBs don’t have Silver

I can’t see the first link (FB), but the 2nd one is a Gulastra Plume - totally unrelated to Silver

JB, but didn’t they used to “not have” the creme genes either?

What is Gulastra Plume? I have to say, I have NEVER heard of that before in my 32 years with horses. I love it, whatever it is.

OK, looking it up. That is stunning! Wow.

The cream/dilute gene has actually been in the TB for a very long time. It’s the JC who just used to say “not have”

Dun is not in the TB gene pool either

Four forms of “bay with silver tails”

Funny I see someone posted that Gulastra Plume TB photo (picture from my photobucket account:)

Four things cause a bay with flaxen/silver/grey mane and or tail:

  1. Gulastra Plume (folks showed this example already)
    Example (TB):
    http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk150/elaineshickman/Color/silvertailTB.jpg
    http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk150/elaineshickman/Color/GulastraPlumeTB.jpg

  2. Dominant White (could also have splash and or sabino)
    Examples:
    Arabian

    Clyde

  1. “Baby Flaxen” This can still be seen as old as 3 years. So some of these horses posted in the OP…could be just Baby Flaxen if they are young enough
    Examples:
    Morgan
    http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk150/elaineshickman/Color/JJP_Hollywood_Lights_baywhitetail.jpg

Morgan
http://i279.photobucket.com/albums/kk150/elaineshickman/Color/baywithbabyflaxen.jpg

  1. A strongly expressed Splash White will have a tail that looks to be “dipped in white paint” These are so obvious, though, because of the amount of body white
    Example:
Morgan (buckskin, not bay, but same concept) This is not a “baby flaxen” tail, even though he’s young…it is a SPLASH WHITE tail
