Interesting TB stallion on Canter out of the Spotted Beauty line. NEEDS HELP!

This is an interesting colt on CANTER

http://www.canterusa.org/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=5246:update-111911-price-reduced-occelli&catid=58:pa-trainer-listings

He is a bit geeky right now as he is only 3.

Here is his pedigree…

For those that are NOT TB fans please dont bother to post as I am not interested in turning this into another trainwreck of TB threads lately.

I think this horse is very interesting!

In what regard?

His pedigree and potential. Right now he looks like parts is parts but I think those parts are going to end up in all the right places.

He certainly seems well bred and he certainly looks young. I agree that he’s very interesting:)

He has nice sporthorse lines and spotted beauty - the dam line - produced quite a few high level sport horses…

From her line 3-0 has come:

Bay Ronald
Blandford
Snow Cat
Caro
Dark Tiger - is the sire off Nightko approved SF, and his two most famous sons: Alligator Fontaine and Frascator Mail.
Zen
Tumbled - who was approved Holsteiner and has many approved sons for example: Carnaby, Coubertin, Catrick I and II, Lorran, Lancelot, Calmero, L. King Arthur (stands in USA), Lavados, charmant, Capriano, Talisman, Orlandi etc… long list… you can look it up on Paardenfokken.

He has two crosses to Spectacular Bid who is the sire of Mytens who is approved KWPN, Holst, Trak, Hann and Westf. Mytens is the sire of Mighty Magic. If you look up Mytens in Paardenfokken he is found in many sport horse pedigrees.

He also has Raja Baba, Fappiano, and several crosses to Tourbillion a few generations back…

If someone was willing to take a chance on him they could always geld him later if he did not turn out to be stallion material.

the racetrack people on the Eventing forum who know Penn National and its denizens say that they wouldn’t touch this poor guy for free, knowing his connections. He’s only had 8 races as a three year old, and even the bad guys who own him think he’s done. He’s one, they say, who really would a racetrack rescue.

He had two races in Florida in the spring, then was off for six months and sold to the bottom feeders at Penn. He won a race in August, and then has been running last or next to last in his last four races. Was a steward’s scratch on October 14th, but ran again on October 25th. Last race was November 11th.

Apparently from this particular trainer, you’d want complete xrays and blood tests, along with an ironclad sales contract. I feel really sorry for the poor guy because he’s probably close to a one way trip to Canada.

Heartbreaking.

It seems a shame to harshly judge a youngster without seeing him in person. I once got a horse from the track that had mostly run last. He had abcesses in three out of four feet from stepping on something…and was running in “G” shoes. His trainer also had not one bale of hay in the shed row, and every quarter inch piece of something edible had been picked out of the filthy shavings in his stall.

Um, what would one be looking for in the blood tests knowing his connections? Or what else about his connections (without heading off the rails here) would require a “ironclad” sales contract different from anyone else?

Interesting that there are two threads on this horse.

Anne, I understand where you are coming from. Lou Lou came from a trainer like that and had a raging case of colitis from eating the shavings since there was no hay :frowning: she also had a fractured cannon bone and what appeared to be osselets but were not… Instead, her fetlocks were destroyed from being run in long feet with racing plates on baby bones.

Her trainer was a notorious POS and she was just one of many.

She was very well bred and turned out to be a fantastic producer but her athletic career was over at three, due to mismanagement.

So I think, at least I am, very leery when I am told a trainer is hard on young horses in particular. I would like to think that a year in the field would cure all ills for him and maybe it would… But these days we have less resources and try to stack the deck more in our favor. I hate it.

Oh no…I feel so bad for him - there must be some cother that could take him and geld him and turn him out for a year.

It brings tears to my eyes - he is only 3. :frowning:

What would you want in a pre-purchase exam for this horse? Bad people can have good horses. He has a look of misery in his eyes - I noticed that first thing.

I have added a needs help to the title - it just doesnt seem fair that at 3 all he has had is misery and now maybe a one way trip to canada

I am willing to chip in some $$ to help him find a home.

Warning from someone who’s family just had to shell out THOUSANDS to help repair an injury on an OTTB horse…

If anyone has read my post on the give a way forum…heed the warnings and get the horse pre purchased because FREE isn’t always free…

Quick fill in on our story…horse posted as free to excellent home due to trainer not being able to afford to give the horse lay up time for a soft tissue injury. Promised us xrays to be delivered with horse.

ALL a line of BS…horse was being kicked off property of boarding stable because BO couldn’t stand seeing horse in pain anymore!

Long story short…horse had fractured his ankle…and trainer/owner didn’t want to pay to have it fixed OR put the horse down.

In walks us…horse has EXCELLENT pedigree…beautiful conformation…was an very exspensive yearling…ect…ect…

Well about $9000 later…we now have a PET!

I have adopted and bought MANY OTTB horses…and always had a great experience with trainers and owners…this one bad experience was a costly and emotional one.

What was I supposed to do? Put the horse to sleep after he survived 30 days in a field and a 10 hour trailer ride up to our farm? He had the desire to live…he earned almost $100K for owner/trainer in his 3 years of racing…my entire family agreed…this guy deserved to have every shot at having a good life…ALIVE…

So…take the advice on the board…cross your “t’s” and dot your “I’s”…free isn’t always free.

Been there done that too - TWICE. One is a pasture puff the other was euthanized due to a diaphramagic hernia.

However I cant ever stop wanting to try and find a safe place for them to land. If I hadnt had a 30K bill for the one we Euthanized I would take this boy in a second. Unfortunately I am still paying off said bill. :frowning:

But I am happy to contribute some $$ - towards vetting, shipping etc… because I know times are tough.

Something about him just speaks to me - I think with time he might turn out all right - at least be someones trail horse…

You can add me as someone who will pitch in a few bucks to get him out of there…

I understand what people are saying about being cautious, considering his background. But wouldn’t it be kinder to the horse to take him in and euthanize him if he is permanently damaged than chance him taking a one way trip to Canada? He has been up on the CANTER site for quite a while, his price has dropped to almost nothing, so I am guessing he doesn’t have much longer. :frowning:

He looks like a big gawky baby to me and if I were interested in a project, I’d look at him. His breeding is very ood for a sporthorse and if he hasn’t been permanently lamed he has potential. I love the length of his neck and shoulder. He looks straight legged.

I also wonder if anyone at Darley is aware that he’s available. Sheikh Mo is quietly very active in retiring and placing his former horses. He bred this one and he’s by Sh. Mo’s most prized stallion, Bernardini.

I would agree that it would be kinder to euthanize him if needed but we dont know yet how bad he is - is there anyone at CANTER PA that could go at least take a look at him?
