My sport cross mare is the real conundrum, she is a brick shithouse already sooo… I’m over here buying adjustable saddle everything She has already surpassed girth and tree for my departed IDSH gelding, who was not a petite fella himself, and ID folks comment on how stout she is for a cross not just bone but also just chest and overall width. By breeding she is mostly QH for goodness sake! She is only a quarter (IIRC) ID, the rest is QH (dam) and KWPN.
Someone liked a post so I thought a halfway decent conformation shot from May (the last time I got one because holy hell I’ve been busy) was due.
She’s big. She’s feeling a little saucy too so we’ve graduated to a rope halter just so I have a little more control, she’s too big to decide she wants the grass over there and we’re going whether I want to or not. WAY too big That’s a 12’ barn aisle.
She’s definitely bigger than my sport mare in every way except body fat
Is she too big? You could send her to me. I could take her off your hands for you. It would be a sacrifice for sure, but that’s what friends are for.
That is a generous offer
So funny story about her being big and saucy (but not really) is I was a dunder head the other night and left a gate in the sacrifice paddock off the barn unlatched. Anyway, everyone, donkeys and all, had a multi hour tour de facilities while I was asleep, I’m mostly upset at myself and upset that they seemed to decide to spend the majority of their time in my newly planted and juuuuuust breaking the surface potato patch Odd choice seeing that I was so behind on mowing the yard but whatever. Anyway, everyone survived, big filly here has a scrape on her noggin and a scrape on her hock that is a little puffy causing down the leg to also be a little puffy.
So saucy =/= spicy because trying to get the big ole beefcake to trot? Ha. Anyway, she’s fine. Sound as a bell. Saucy is just without better manners because she’s adorable and tractable, but not worked with enough right now because I know she’s a good girl and I’m busier than a one-armed man in a paper-hanging contest. Why I decided to have a farm and build jumps and try to host clinics and have a full time job that consists of overtime and shift work is beyond me. But I did. So she could have better manners and if she wasn’t intrinsically good she’d be a real brat. What she is though is just funny.
One of the many clips of them in the driveway checking out my mid-construction cavalettis… Apparently Argie found the sound of pea gravel terrifying and took off, this was the only time either of the donkeys appeared on any of my surveillance cameras around the house. Also if Libbi tries to claim the cavalettis are scary when presented u/s I’m calling her liar.

Holy schitt that is a biiiig baby!! Just coming 2, right (or am I a year out and she’s 3- in which case that’s a biiiig mare)?
The snorting in the darkness!!
Oh, you rotten kids!
Did they actually get into anything or was the only casualty the potato patch?
Turned two 4/30 !
My potato patch was the only casualty that I’ve found. The donkeys didn’t colic or get laminitis but some struck of good good luck and neither mare injured themselves. Shocking because based on the poops, they spent the most time in the most dangerous area: between the garden and the neighbor’s barbed wire fence and next to my chicken area, which is… not tidy, I have the quarantine coop and some buckets and tubs and other stuff just …vaguely…over there. Lucky lucky. I won’t be doing THAT again. Idiot me.
Well, I feel like if a potato patch couldn’t handle having the occasional Irish horse in it, then some aspects of Irish rural society would probably have been managed differently over time.
I hope yours makes it through and all’s well that ends well. I’m not terribly surprised they managed to keep out of the worst trouble. Between the burros and the two fillies you have a remarkable amount of potential for equine common sense on your farm.
She’s a tank!
So glad everyone came through mostly unscathed.
Oh, I knew there was a reason I really liked her!
She shares a B-day with my bestest mare (my username), who should have been 30
Completely unrelated to the gorgeous filly but in case anyone was worried …
My potatoes survived
That’s good - potatoes are an important food group.
Grey
So my potatoes are still doing well
Also, giant baby I’m pretty sure hit 16h or more because… well… because I’m sure having to crank my neck a lot and she keeps looking down at me like this and laughing
I pulled her for a bath, mane trim (scissors, dont burn me at the stake but I’m not pulling THAT, it’s on both sides), and then randomly decided to see what she thought of a saddle and I didn’t want to pull the girth tight but barely got it on and it’s my chunky mare’s tack. Yeesh.
She’s lovely, still has a lot of growing to do but very nice hind end and fabulous neck for a mare her age! Have you had her inspected? you should think about it at some point.
Also- I’m going to save you thousands of dollars and months of aggravation: when you get ready to start her send a tracing of her back and some photos to berney bros in Kildare and buy whatever saddle they say to get for $1300 or whatever it costs then and ride in it till she stops growing.
Oh yes she’ll be inspected, next year is a maybe but four year for sure. Depends on how she looks next year. She can’t be presented until next year.
i thought she as 3 already! I would probably wait until 4 given her size myself.
Noooo giant two yo! I’m leaning toward her fourth year also.
