Irish Horses - great International run - US options?

I will fully admit not paying particular attention to the ISH. However, after watching Flexible, and then watching Rolex this past weekend, I am totally smitten  Not to mention, we have lovely TB blood here in the US, and there’s no arguing the success of TB x Irish blood…

So, what are our options for Cruising blood in the US? What about Clover Brigade? His son, Kilrodan Abbot, is a fabulous, fabulous horse.

I believe Flexible and Cougar, another Cruising son, are available frozen.
There are also descendants of Cruising’s sire, Sea Crest available

Just saw this on the IDHSNA website
Sue Rowdon reported that of the 27 horses finishing 2012 Rolex 3 Day Event, 6 had Irish Draught blood.

Congratulations to Allison Springer and Arthur (by Brandenburg’s Windstar, RIDSH), highest placing IDSH, second by fewer than 2 points.

Karen O’Connor on Mr. Medicott (by Cruising) finished fourth.
Peter Barry on Kilrodan Abbott (sired by a Clover Hill son) finished 11th.
Jane Sleeper and UN (King of Diamonds on damside) were 21st.
Madeline Blackman and Gordonstown ( sired by a son of Cruising) were 24th.
Jordan Linstedt and Tullibards Hawkwind (by Cruising) finished 27th.

We do have a Clover Hill grandson PL Diamond Hill available. His sire Collie Mor Hill was a GP jumper. His owner plans to move him from eventing to jumpers this summer. He is being used primarily with the farm’s with Arab mares for eventing, but I would love to see him to a nicely matched TB.

You have the Cruising son USA Crusing at Acron Hill and the CH son Carlow Clover

Mountain Pearl used to stand here, but was under used and went back to Ireland. He has produced some great IDSH before leaving. Free and Clear by MP used to be ridden by Phillip Dutton. MP also has a GP jumper son in Europe. I think we missed our chance and we may see more UL horses by him or a son of his down the road from Ireland. I own a daughter and GDaughter of his and am taking the granddaughter to a Rosenthal son for what I hope will be a dressage star. Good moving, athletic line

Rhyd’s Sea Quest is a Sea Crest son and full brother to Grade A Showjumper in Ireland Sir Rivie. http://www.shelbournefarm.com/sir_rivie.html

Seen a few Sir Rivie’s in Ireland and they are lovely horses.

I don’t believe USA Cruising is approved with the Irish Draught Society here in the States, so I’m not certain of your registry options if you go that way.

I posted this link in the eventing forum but no harm posting it here also.

It’s worth bearing in mind that Cruisings, while supremely talented are also well known for being sharp and spooky, so while of course there are always exceptions to the rule, they can be a pros ride.

Here’s some more info on Cruisings currently eventing in Ireland:

Some very well known names there.

Arthur is reported by Horse Sport Ireland as being an Irish TB. Seems odd they would describe him thus if he has Draught blood.

Thank you for the link to Cougar, I wasn’t familiar with him, but a lovely mare by him was bred to AFR and just foaled a beautiful colt on the weekend.

HSI is not always accurate:eek:

Arthur is by Phyllis Dawson’s late Brandenburgs Windstar, a grandson of Sea Crest, sire of Cruising

Nope, after checking, they do have the same pedigree that you have listed, it was obviously an error in the press release describing him as an Irish TB.

Touch of the Blues is back standing with us this year. At 25 (last Sunday), the guy is still pretty darn impressive looking <smile>. http://www.manufortifarms.com/stalliontotb.htm

As Napoles mentioned Cruisings although super talented are predominantly tricky. Flexible falls into the particularly tricky category.
‘Cruise On’ is still very popular for eventers and also Ollie Townend has a gorgeous Cruising Stallion ‘Honor Cruise’
2 ISH that I really like and work so well with TB mares are Kings Master and Carrick Diamond Lad. The added advantage is that you can use them on very hot mares due to the temperaments of the stallions being so good.
Clover Flush is another one that has produced top jumpers and since coming back from Australia is proving very popular with event producers crossing to TB mares. Have heard he was a little hot though.
Kedrah stud stand a gorgeous young stallion Yeats, his pedigree would have traditionalists drooling. CruisingxClover Hill plus damline to King of Diamonds.

You know what I think of TOTB! Alas evidently his semen is not available to outside mares or I would consider breeding Sophie’s dam back to him.

Scroll down for a pic of Sophie’s younger brother Moonshadow by TOTB

We have a 4 year old by PL Diamond Hill (Playland Farm in MD). If good temperament is what you want, you should look at PL Diamond Hill. Our 4 year old is like a puppy dog. He is sweet, calm, and loves to jump. My daughter does not plan to compete above Novice, as she works a lot of hours and does not have time to compete regularly. She recently took the 4 year old cross country schooling at Rubicon Farm. He happily trotted and cantered around the prenovice course, and did the water and ditches from the Novice course. I have no idea if he has the talent to be a big time horse, but he certainly is a good boy who loves to jump.

Re Horsetails post above; Mountain Pearl produced the stallion To be Sure who is up here in Langley. There are quite a few of them around here and they all have been stamped with TBS’s remarkable temperament. Willing and kind and bold.
I have one here ‘To be Fine’ out of my Final Pool mare. He’s so danged friendly you can’t take his picture.

An interesting event with Irish Draughts in Ireland

www.irish-horse-imports.com
Cappa Stud is one of the largest breeders in Ireland and since the Irish horse market is so poor now he has set up this interesting sale. He has offered a nice selection of Irish Draughts and sport horses of all ages. He has arranged for their shipping to America via Doyles in Canada…this is included in the purchase price in the auction. The import and quarantine is included in the purchase price…when the horse clears quarantine the purchaser pays from that point.
Doyles can arrange for State-side shipping post quarantine but that will be puchasers expense. In addition to the very nice Irish Draughts there is a Darco son from a Cloverhill bred mare. PatO

Thanks for sharing. I love that line and I think it can produce top talent and give you an easier temperament than the Sea Crest/Cruising lines are known for

Horsetails - do you have more on Mountain Pearl since he went home? Or on any of his other offspring? Seems to me Deltawave has one. Always interesting to hear of similarly bred horses.

One of my favourite statistics is that of the top 15 horses that evented in Hong Kong 2008, 7 were Irish bred.

Allison Springer’s Arthur - Brandenburg’s Windstar

So sad to loose Brandenburg’s Windstar. I wish one of his lovely colts had been left intact! Arthur is far from his only superb offspring. Along with the several at the top levels, he has numerous offspring running around training and prelim courses making it all look easy. This page includes his amazing pedigree. I think I would buy a horse with this pedigree sight unseen
