That’s really the question. Can a horse with Irish Draught blood be registered in any of the continental warmblood registries? Are they excluded as a “draft” breed? Outside of the Irish Draught sport horse studbook, are there any other stubdooks open to these horses? Thanks!
i had a 1/4 RID who was registered with AWR.
The American Warmblood Registry is a bit of a stand-alone group because the horses can be accepted on basis of approval without proof of breeding, they also seem to work on the notion that cold blood + hot blood = Warmblood which might well produce a lovely horse but wouldn’t be the same as the generations of selective breeding that’s gone into producing a ‘European’ WB
The entire thinking behind the Sport Horse Registry is to produce a horse that doesn’t need to be a WB but has true potential to succeed in Dressage, jumping or eventing, you might do better to focus in that direction.
WB registry doesn’t mean instant value, there’s plenty of awful ones out there
You mean the RID sport horse studbook, or is there a separate Sport Horse Registry?
The AWB seems to have now added ‘and Sport Horse’ to their registry so I suppose you could look there
There are some Sport Horse registries, I’m not sure if they’re worth much but might be something to look at
If your horse qualifies for the Irish Draught Sport Horse Registry then it would make more sense to me to register with them
So to be clear, none of the continental warmblood registries accept horses with native Irish blood? Not in any amount?
Old ISR NA does in the dam line - they may drop the horse into the lower books, and I’m pretty sure they won’t approve a stallion with RID blood, but they have basically the same rules as AWS on the dam line - lower book, but accepted and registered.
ISR/OldNA has no ties to Europe and seems to share the AWS and AWR philosophy of taking “anything with four legs”. RSPI used to too, but I’m not sure post-Westfalen merger.
An Irish horse is in no way a warmblood. They’re lovely, but nothing like an EU WB, so it doesn’t cross many people’s minds to breed them with WBs.
The “Irish Sport Horse” is ID, TB and any amount of WB.
An Irish Sport Horse is a horse, bred in Ireland, that has been inspected and approved by Horse Sport Ireland. They can, but don’t have to, have ID blood. This is a relatively new decision by the Irish Horse Counsel.
The horse you’re talking about would be an Irish Draught Sport Horse.
The WBFSH includes the ISH Stud book.
Yes, Cruising at least is licensed by Selle Francais, and Flexible by BWP.
WBFSH is a new one for me. How’s their credibility as a registry? Any better than AWS?
Thanks for the info! That’s really what I was looking for.
WBFSH stands for World Breeding Federation for Sport Horses. They are a federation that I know holds competitions and maintains rankings across their recognized registries…but they are not a registry themselves.
FWIW, I am taking my Holsteiner/ID cross to ISR/Old NA inspections so she has some scores in the warmblood world even if she is stuck forever in the Pre-Mare book. The IDHSNA doesn’t really love the non-TB crosses, but she is approved there also.
There are absolutely loads of Irish (ID, ISH, IDSH) horses crossed with WBs in Ireland all the time. Have a peek at the Goresbridge catalogs sometime.
Exactly.
And horses like Flexible (Cruising x Safari xx) and the numerous other Irish horses competing at the top of the sport are completely on par with the “EU WBs” at least for jumping sports.
You only have to peruse the Irish studbook to see how they are integrated in to European breeding; http://www.horsesportireland.ie/wp-c…ublication.pdf
But the majority of those Irish/wb crosses tend to be in the Irish book, but yes that book is a part of wbfsh.
I would always get excited when they would announce and Irish book horse at csis on the continent but they were almost all the same bloodlines as the continental wbs.
Still cruising and flexible and possible others are in euro wb books that aren’t the Irish book.
