Is Riding Cruel? A Vegan Perspective

Well, I was vegan. Past-tense. And by definition - to me - that really means never ever ever cheating. I recall accidentally getting meat when traveling - it involved family members vomiting in the bathroom. I don’t really care what anybody wants to do with their life, but I do think they should be honest about it if they choose to label it.

I wasn’t healthy as a vegan. I was underweight. Interestingly, I almost died of malnourishment as an infant. I couldn’t digest soy and wheat. The hospital fed me eggs to save me. So I guess I wasn’t so strict haha.

You’re not vegan. You might eat a vegan type diet and try to avoid other animal products but if you live on a farm and keep animals and ride horses, that’s not vegan.[/QUOTE]

It’s actually news to me that “vegan” is now conflated with “RARA.” I’d really thought it was just a heroically ascetic dietary regimen. Sounds like an awful lot of work, too–I’d bet about 98% of them won’t be doing it in 5 years or when they have kids, whichever comes first.

why not? It’s not like we got the market cornered on time consuming hobbies.

So what do you call someone who eats no animal products? A carnivore?

According to Wikipedia (why not?), there are “dietary vegans” and “ethical vegans.” Why take a video made by a wackadoodle as representative of an entire group?

A vegetarian.

Vegetarians (I’m one) eat dairy products and eggs, which are animal products. So, sorry, try again.

So rabid vegans are animal haters like PETA who hide behind the mask of being compassionate but kill them as fast as they can when no one is looking so they can have the planet all to themselves.

Isn’t that special.

BTW There is something off with the person in the videos face, Her jaw is too broad and the lines around her mouth are disturbing.
It brings to my mind the ‘big head disease’ that the turn of the centuries bakers horses would get from their diet.

I would like to compare her facial structure to close family relatives of hers that were not raised vegan.

I did notice that, also that she was yellowish around her mouth and nose, pale the rest.
Strange way to tan, is what I was thinking.

My understanding has always been that “vegan” describes a lifestyle/philosophy, not a diet.

Vegans do not consume any animal products.

But someone who does not consume any animal products is not necessarily vegan. Because the diet is only part of the lifestyle.

If that wasn’t the case, why would there even be a video questioning if horseback riding can fit into a vegan lifestyle? Horseback riding =/= horse eating. If “vegan” refers only to diet, why are we even having this discussion?

And don’t give me the whole “one wackadoodle” until you’ve read the comments under that video!

I apologized for my comments about her appearance because it occurred to me after that she may be fighting cancer or dealing with liver failure or something really awful, so I felt bad about saying she looked sickly.

I am going to say, I see a lot of what I would personally consider cruelty with horses, but we’re so used to it that we don’t really take notice of it any more.

You know, horses with people hanging off their mouths, spur marks, horses stabled 24/7 with no exercise etc. I went to watch show jumping a few months ago with my boyfriend and he said it made him very uncomfortable, and he’s not soft! Tbf someone did get eliminated for what was essentially beating the crap out of their horse.

I know with horses there is an element of physical ‘correction’ that is unavoidable, but I don’t think repeatedly socking it in the back teeth is it!! If we saw livestock treated like that, we would be pretty outraged, so not sure why it’s suddenly okay with horses…

But yeah, the original link is stoopid :stuck_out_tongue:

Stuff vegans say.

How many rabid vegans can actually do what they say every one should.
Any crop that needs to be pollinated is not vegan (It exploits the poor little girl bees)
Oil* and coal* products are not vegan. (Crude oil is derived from organic animal product rendered in the bowels of the earth was the last theory I heard batted around)

*I will give a box of sugar cubes to the person who videos the most militant vegan they can locate and points this hypocrasy out to them.

(Crude oil is derived from organic animal product rendered in the bowels of the earth was the last theory I heard batted around) just because they died millions of years ago doesn’t mean they are not being exploited. It is exploitation to rob a grave too in both cases the dead are being disturbed and their value exploited (Okay that is a stretch but not much more than their twisted views)

I will give a box of sugar cubes* to the person who videos the most militant vegan they can locate and points this hypocrisy out to them so we can watch them recant their views or have a meltdown on camera.

** I will bump it up to a box of the pretty ones (that I think are vegan) http://www.victoriantradingco.com/item/35-re-350004/100101100/dainty-rosebud-sugar-cubes-box-of-20

Or could be the light in the video also distorting colors.

God I could not get past the first minute. Wonder if it is “VEGAN” to have your chest covered in a huge tatoo.
The internet has sure brought out all types.

The fact that we’ve actually been discussing this idea as though it needed an argument for 6 pages makes me smack my head.
