The shipping (for me at least) is listed as $57. That is hardly outrageous - especially from AZ to VA. I’ve sold a few saddles on eBay. I never wind up paying less than $40 for UPS Ground. The last saddle I sold was a Wintec - cost me over $60 to ship from VA to TX. That doesn’t include the box and packing materials either.
well, I did say little but I routinely ship saddles from east to west coast via USPS and its almost always under $40, tracked and insured (values around the $1k mark)… neighboring states, around $20. Shipping materials runs about $6, box and peanuts/newspaper (which I personally don’t believe in “charging” for). So - to me at least - $57 is a tad bit high for just a regular dressage saddle.
iirc, Rick’s is $38
Larger saddles like side saddles, etc, thats a whole 'nuther story.
Actually, the shipping on this is quite reasonable. Last time I shipped a saddle intrastate, it was about $35. Seller is doing actual cost here.
And if I hadn’t just bought my dream Stubben, I’d be bidding on this bad boy.
if its reasonable its reasonable then, lol, can’t argue!
I don’t know how you get from $35 purportedly real cost to $57 and call them both reasonable.
But places like Rick’s ship for $38 because they buy blanket insurance policies for shipping saddles around. They don’t purchase that separately for each one. They also insure them on their end for wholesale value, not retail.
I also assume the private seller here is paying to have the thing professionally packed and then shipped anywhere in the US… and not losing any money, thank you very much.
lol, where were you people when I let saddles go out on trial and the buyer would complain a blue streak about the cost of returning! “$80 (aka $40 each way) to try a saddle? insane!” lol.
I’ve never had someone not cry - well at least wimper - about the cost of shipping, and like I said, it keep it well under $40 each way, usually closer to $20 than $40.
I guess reasonable is in the eye of the beholder Next time I get a cryer, I’m sending them to y’all for an adjustment!
to get back on track, nice saddle at a good price though - shipping aside - hope it suits someone.
You won’t get any cries from me for charging $40 to ship a saddle. I’m still baffled how you manage to ship a saddle for $20. Saddle shops can charge less because they get discounted rates for shipping in bulk and probably don’t insure for the full value (which most eBay sellers do). Plus, they probably have plenty of shipping supplies on hand.
I bought my Albion SLK dressage saddle from TackTrader.com last fall - shipper charged $50 to ship from MI to VA via USPS Priority Mail. No complaints from me. The label on the package was around $52 - so it cost them more than their estimate.
I sold my Tucker Equitation Endurance on eBay. I charged a flat $50 to ship. I shipped via UPS Ground - insured for $900. It cost me $90 to ship from VA to CA. That price did NOT include the box or packing materials. I packed it myself too - didn’t pay UPS to do it. I lost $40 on that deal! As mentioned earlier, it cost $60 for UPS Ground - insured for $600 - to ship my Wintec Dressage Pro from VA to TX. Luckily, I didn’t lose as much money on that one. Neither the Tucker nor the Wintec were particularly heavy either.
In summary, I wouldn’t think twice for paying a private seller $50-60 to ship a saddle. Based on my personal experience, I think that price range is entirely reasonable. Plus, I know how much eBay/PayPal fees cost.
boxing appropriately is the secret.
There is more of a surcharge for size than there is weight.
I pad the saddles very carefully, put them in a quite large box, then trim the box down as small as I can go. I in effect make a custom box. Yes, its labor of love, but once you get the hang of it really no big deal. I have never had someone less than pleased with the way their saddles arrive.
A 21# box measuring 24x16x21 (2" larger in each size than the lovely 17.5" W hoop tree, extended gusseted dressage saddle I have sitting here on my lap), costs $17.41 to go from NJ to DeMoines IA via parcel, $12.58 to Boiling Springs, PA, and $26.38 to Walla Walla WA. Delivery conf is 70¢, and insurance runs about $1.25 per $hundred.
In fact, the clever shipper I bought this saddle from got it from europe to me, in 5 days, via fedex, fully insured and customs paid, for $129. It was beautifully packaged in 2 inches of bubble wrap, and in a box trimmed down to fit precisely. The size made all the difference.
I have a friend in an upper level position at UPS, and even with the special “paypal discount” he said he’d have trouble matching the prices the post office has.
Priority mail is a complete other animal, but I’ll tell you, priority has no guarantee, just an “expected by”, and within local states is only a day faster than parcel. For what can be a 30% savings, parcel is just fine. Large saddles are also an entirely different thing, once you break the USPS size barrier (cumulative 108" or 118" I forget), then you easily start going $50+. I did once send a saddle and was too pressed for time to cut the box down, figured I’d just send it as is and eat the extra $15, how much could it be right? $85
Hopefully this shipping tidbit is a “steal of a deal” in itself and isn’t violating the thread!

well, if someone insists that $57 to ship a saddle is reasonable, then it must be so - as “reasonable” is completely subjective - and who am I to argue the logic? Just because I don’t share that reasoning doesn’t mean its wrong. So, by that virtue, both can be called reasonable
So, I happily stand corrected, $57 to ship a saddle apparently is reasonable.
