It's Here! Maryland 5*

Not the same horse. Ellie O’Neal rides Zick Zack.

For anyone who can get MPT, they’re replaying XC now until 9:30
(Followed by a program on Chincoteague ponies)

Did anyone else notice how Dom Schramm fell to the ground when he dismounted after his round? Tired legs?

It wasn’t an easy course but I’m sure Ian Stark is happy with his design.

Phillip posted a photo on his social media (attached to another post) of Fernhill Singapore resting in hill stall. Zick Zack is also well according to her rider.

Was Harry Meade wearing a vest?? It looked like he just had a shirt and his number on.

We were walking by right after PD’s fall. Singapore was on the ground but when they were trying to surround him with the blue tarps in a downpour with wind he popped up, all tack was already removed PD was basically holding him with just reins around his neck until they got a halter on. There was a vet there they walked him in a few circles and decided to walk him back and he looked good at the walk. PD and the vet followed in a gator

Just learned that Zick Zack is a mare

Any word on Caroline and Captain Jack?

His face was really red. I’m thinking he was just really overheated.

Thank you for this! Huge sigh of relief. I think we were just all so relieved after a good day and THAT to no news!

Huge congrats to Ian Stark. Lovely, huge, forgiving course. I think our US riders looked mostly great. This one looked comparable to Burghley, but seeing so many good results is heartening. Lots of good riding today.

I don’t want to be that person but it was nice hearing the foreign contingent struggle in spots and say it was difficult! They did well, but it was hard.

I know from the USEA podcast Ian didn’t want that many double clears, but I have to think that if the rain moved in a little earlier there would have been far fewer, so to me the course was correct. In October in MD, the ground was unusually forgiving. I am sure it was built for wetter, and having lived there, wet was the right bet.

Phillip got the worst of the weather. It held off for everyone else.

Absolutely. He rode very well and posted on his FB it was a small gate. Not trying to blame him or IS in any way, it was just a heart wrencher not seeing Singapore get up. Didn’t look any too comfy for PD either, he got some back leg action, hope they are both in an epsom salt bath.

PD’s horse was up and looked sound walking. He actually walked part of the way back with us as we were going to the parking area. You’d never know what happened by watching him walk.

Agreed that it was a good day of and for the sport. I never once thought “carnage”.

The riders I heard comments from all seemed to agree that it was a proper five star course - very thoughtful in it’s design in the placement of fences and the questions asked. I kind of liked the number of double clears - a bit of a refreshing change from most 5*s where the time is almost unattainable. Loved seeing some of the double clears that were down in the standings climb up the leaderboard.

Some great rounds from mares today! On Cue, Classic Moet, Indy 500, Stella Artois.

The fence 11 complex with the brush corners was a bit of a bogey - kind of like those frangible corners at Tokyo.

I like that because we now have the Maryland 5*, it’s much more natural to refer to the other US 5* as the Kentucky 5* rather than calling it by the title sponsor’s name

I was hiding out from the rain in the VIP tent when PD went down. I will never forget the sounds from the crowd in there. I have to admit I was pretty positive the horse was dead, it really looked like he broke his neck. I am sooo happy to be wrong. Not only would that be sad and tragic it would have been a black mark on an otherwise wonderful inaugural event that a lot of people I know have worked tirelessly towards creating.

I had to give away my tickets because we are moving next weekend and I had a million things to do. But I was listening to the commentary, then got to watch the replay on Maryland Public Broadcasting.

It was really a refreshing turn of events to see many of our American horse and rider combos finishing double clear, yet see some of the Europeans looking knackered. Obviously I do not wish ill on them. But we hoped a second 5* would improve the caliber of our US competitors, and my first impression is that it seems to be helping already. I don’t know what SJ will do to the leaderboard today but at least the Maryland 5* hasn’t been an easy paycheck for Euro contingent.
